Over the past couple of years, some of you may have heard of the Cambridge Vet School non-surgical IVDD study. The results have just been published. It’s a great write-up and quite groundbreaking!

Dogs unable to walk due to disc extrusion (IVDD) were cared for WITHOUT surgery. They had an MRI scan at the start of the study and another MRI scan after 12 weeks. These scans helped to make the diagnosis, and they also showed how compressed (squashed) the spinal cord was in each case.

The big questions were:
❓How many of these dogs would start walking again without having had surgery?
❓How compressed was each dog’s spinal cord at the start of the study?
❓Were they still just as compressed at the end of the study, 12 weeks later?

Results were interesting and included the following:
✅Out of the dogs that had deep pain sensation, NEARLY ALL of them (49 of 51 dogs, 96%) started walking again within 12 weeks. Most of them walked much sooner than this.
✅Out of those with NO deep pain sensation, nearly half of them (10 of 21 dogs, 48%) started walking again within 12 weeks. That’s WITHOUT surgery.
✅Spinal cord compression reduced in some dogs over the 12 week study period. That’s despite not having had surgery to remove the disc material that caused this compression.
✅Many dogs started walking again despite the fact that their spinal cord was still compressed, ie ‘Recovery was not dependent on the resolution of compression’

💛The authors concluded that if spinal surgery isn’t possible as it’s not available in the area or is too expensive, non-surgical management is a valid alternative.

Good day at Kilmarnock & District Open Show.

First up was Squire with 1st & BOB then we had the mini smooths where my friend & husband both entered the ring for the first time to handle Oscar and Sebastian, both doing a fab job 🥰
Meredith - 1st & BOB
Oscar - 2nd, Best Puppy and Puppy Group 3
Seb - 3rd

Next was Gisele who was a super star all day -
1st, BOB & Best Puppy AVNSC.
She was then short listed in a strong toy group and took toy puppy group 1 🤩

Thank you so much to Largs Market/Largs Events for having us today to the ‘Dogs Day Out’ - it turned out to be an amazing day 🥰

We had so many lovely visitors to the van to meet our dogs and learn about the Dachshund breed, we met lots of fellow Dachshund lovers/owners and we were visited by lots of our grandpups 🩷🩵 The highlight for me though was seeing them with their owners in the fun dog show - winning ribbons of course! 🥰🏆🤩 & even better the sun was out for it all! Our van was so busy all day and we have some very tired sausages tonight after all the attention they received from everyone 😍🥰 Thank you to the organisers for such a brilliant day and to all my helpers throughout the day especially Eva & Jodie who were handling some of the Atikan crew for the show classes 🙂 x

Job description:
We are looking for a hardworking, trustworthy person who can confidently care for our home and small holding to a high standard which will include all household chores and the day to day care of all of our animals which includes dogs, cats, horses & goats.

Please note we are a licensed dog breeder and as a result we are looking for someone confident to deal with potential emergency situations, whelping and raising of puppies etc. Relevent training will be given, it is however important that the potential candidate is confident and happy to work under such situations alone once training is complete.

This role is flexible to suit the right candidate with regard to hours/days and this can be discussed but person must be happy to work weekends and stay on site when needed.

Requirements:
•Driving license and access to own car.
•Must be extremely reliable and comfortable to work alone with the variety of animals.
•Able to follow instructions and learn on the job.
•General understanding of dog behaviour.
•General experience with livestock/equine.
•Confident handling and working with a variety of animals.
•Flexibility during the working day and working hours.
•Able to offer night shifts and sleepovers.
•Being on call and available for emergencies when required.
•Physically fit as this work can be physically demanding.
•A qualification in Animal Welfare Management is preferred but not necessary for the right candidate as full training will be given.

Day in the blue’s at Larkhall & District Open Show. Sadly had clashing resulting in missing some classes but Sebastian was 2nd in mini smooth dachshund open and Gisele 2nd IG Open & AV Toy Puppy 🩵

Horrible day weather wise at Border Union and Scottish Dachshund Chamionship Shows in Kelso yesterday 🌧️ Did not help my cold whatsoever 🤧

But we had some good results;
•Sebastian 2nd in Puppy Dog & 2nd in his Special Beginner Memorial Stakes.
•Meredith was 2nd & 3rd in her junior b*tch classes.
•And Squire won his puppy dog class taking best puppy dog in breed. 🤩🥰
