Every horse, every year.

Retired. Broodmare. Pet. And of course, donkeys. Its not just ridden horses who need dental checks.

Thank you Gemma Lawrie Horse Dentistry for coming today to tend to lady and lavender.
Please, get your equines teeth checked and treated at least once a year.
ALL EQUINES
Donkeys, mules, horses and ponies, ridden and non ridden from 3 to 30 and older if you are lucky enough to have an OAP. The two girls made their old owners thousands of pounds by producing foals. Is a yearly dental check too much to ask for? If I can do it here for 60+ surely people with less can do it.
If you can't afford horses, don't have horses.
Rant over for now.
Lady and lavender no longer have sharp teeth. They will be able to chew comfortably, digest more effectively and gain condition 💕🐴💕
See you later in the month Gemma for our regular monthly visit ❤️

This is so true.

Too often I have had horses done routinely until they retire, then the dentistry stops.

A few years down the line, I'm called in a panic because the horse can't eat and what was once a routine mouth is now a train wreck.

Stick to the routine. Keep dentals up to date.

Even if your horse is no longer ridden, regular dental care remains as essential part of their welfare as they still need to eat efficiently.

Equines have hypsodont dentition meaning they have a large reserve crown which is in continuous wear throughout their lifetime and constantly erupts approximately 2-4mm per year. This means molar teeth will continually develop sharp enamel points and any dental overgrowths will progressively worsen if not appropriately addressed.

Regular dental treatments ensure your horse stays comfortable and free from discomfort. They also help identify and address dental issues early.

Don't wait for problems to arise, as they may become more difficult to manage. Proactive, regular dental care throughout their lifetime is key to ensuring your horse's long term dental health and their overall well being.

Some good tips here.

I'm not particularly fussy but if your tap is at the far end of the yard or your water pressure is low, I really appreciate a bucket of clean water waiting by the stable.

And remember, it's quite common for horses that are perfect to be caught, to choose the day I arrive to be the day they decide coming in isn't worth it 😅

👉🏼 Tips to prepare for a smooth and efficient routine dental appointment!

- Ensure your horse is caught and ready at the allocated appointment time. This helps avoid delays and allows the EDT to start the examination and treatment promptly.

- Prepare a safe, clean, and dry stable or working area. Remove any potential hazards such as hay nets, toys, and mucking out equipment. A clean, hazard free stable or area will provide a safe working environment for both the horse and the EDT.

- Have a couple of buckets of fresh water ready too. This is for rinsing the horse’s mouth out and then for cleaning and disinfecting equipment afterwards. On colder days if there is a possibility of a bucket of hot water, your EDT would be very grateful!

Donkeys, donkeys everywhere!

It was a very busy day for me and Casey Phair Equine Dental Technician. 16 donkeys in and ready for their annual dental check.

This farm has the perfect set up for donkeys. Donkeys are very sociable and don't like being on their own. We started in a big shed with all donkeys present, then as we completed each pair, we let them into the next yard. This meant they were separated enough that we didn't get muddled over who still needed done, but close enough that no one got stressed.

Yearly maintenance in donkeys is just as important as it is for horses and ponies. Please don't forget about them just because they aren't ridden.

The perfect example of the stoic horse

Just because a horse is in good condition, doesn't mean it's not in pain. Horses are so good at hiding their problems.

I hear so often, "he doesn't need his teeth done as he's not ridden"

Do you think the horse in the picture would only be in pain when being ridden?

Luckily, the first thing Spirit's new owner did was book a dental check. A much happier horse now.

My June visit to Equine halfway house pony rescue and refuge - Equine Welfare Network. I work for this charity at a discounted rate, but with a lot of ponies (around 50 residents), the bills still add up. If you would like to donate towards dental fees, you can send money directly or you can donate directly to me. Thank you x

Lovely Nara ❤. 2 days old and has already had her first dental check. It'll be another 4 days before Nara's first teeth cut through the gums, but it's never to early for introductions! Nara also got to watch her mum Daisy have her teeth rasped (video in comments)

Well this was a nice surprise!

Today at the BAEDT AGM I won the award for the "Member who has gone beyond the expected level of service to help an equine/equines"

This is voted for by the public so thank you all so much for going to the effort of voting for me 🥰. It was so heartwarming when the BAEDT Chairman read out some of the lovely things you said. You all know how much I love my job and all your wonderful horses.

Thank you so much xx

It's that time of year again where I spend a few days surrounded by Equine Dental Technicians and vets as this weekend is the BAEDT's Congress and AGM in Wolverhampton.

Every year this coincides with the BAEDT magazine release of which (for the last time), I am joint-editor.

I've spent 5 years (6 editions) with the magazine and much as it's been hard work, it's incredibly rewarding to see the final result.

My favourite bit is getting to put a client's horse on the cover and this year it goes to Casper (Nicci Hall's Ladykiller). Casper has had a horrendous year, but thanks to Nicci's amazing dedication, today saw him out competing again, so I thought it was worthy to top her day off by releasing the magazine cover a day early.

Huge thanks to Martha Lily Photography for so kindly letting me use her photo of Casper.

I am more than happy to take donations direct to cover dentistry bills at Equine halfway house pony rescue and refuge - Equine Welfare Network. Much as I do dentistry at a heavily reduced rate, times it by 40-50 ponies and it still all adds up.

I will do a proper dental day post later as the ponies all had some interesting issues, but for now I need to say a massive THANK YOU to the person who donated money direct to Gemma Lawrie Horse Dentistry towards our dental bill.
This was an amazing, much needed surprise today.
I don't know who you are, but I hope you see this and know how appreciated it was. ❤️

Kimberly had her routine maintenance yesterday. At 25 years old, she is looking amazing and still goes out to shows. I've been looking after her teeth now yearly for at least 8 years and her dental health shows just how much routine dentistry pays off. Her teeth may now be looking older, but her gum health is exceptional and she just loves her food.

Busy morning in Coleraine. Thank to Mark for sedating Moses to get his wolf tooth removed and for sedating Peg who just doesn't like me 🤦‍♀️. Tanni and the little ponies (Beau and Belle) were perfectly behaved.

"My horse/pony/donkey isn't ridden so he doesn't need his teeth done."

An unfortunate myth that too many owners still seem to believe.

Just because they aren't ridden, doesn't mean the teeth don't get sharp and cause pain. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean the pain isn't there.

Thankfully, this donkey will be feeling better because her new owner believes all equines need dentistry, whether ridden or not.

Another very busy day checking 12 donkeys and one pony.

Thank you Gemma Lawrie Horse Dentistry for seeing Nutty, Bopp and Oatsie today.
We stuck with the teeny tinys due to my hand being so bloomin sore after an appointment yesterday for a new splint 🙈
They were all very good boys. Even Oatsie, who isn't even 3 yet, but had teeth sharp enough to hurt his cheeks. All better now 💕
Thank you also Rowan Lodge Farm Equine Haylage for delivering the 8 bales donated by John ❤️
They are already being enjoyed. 🐴💕🐴
