There’s no set number of treats dogs should have, and no two dogs are the same, but if you do give your dog something tasty, it should make up no more than 10% of their daily calories 🐶

You can give your dog treats in a food toy or puzzle, so they must work to get the snack out. Not only is it fun for them it has the added advantage of burning extra calories.

Commercial treats are convenient but check the nutritional label because they’re often calorie dense and high in fats and sugar. There are healthier alternatives you can give your dog that they’ll love just as much. Try them with carrot sticks, broccoli, or green beans, cooked or raw. Dogs also love apples which are full of fibre 🥕🥦🍎🫛

Our feline friends might be feeling the heat this week, keep them safe by trying the following:

☀️ change their bedding - swap out any thick, fluffy beds for something lightweight and elevated to encourage airflow
💧 keep them hydrated - pop some extra water bowls out for them and make sure they’re clean and topped up with cold water
☀️ keep the house cool - keep blinds closed and fans on (unless they’re a cable chewer) or windows open (unless they can escape)
💧 cooling treats - you can always try popping their favourite snacks like tuna and yoghurt snacks in the freezer, just make sure they’re a little defrosted before giving
☀️ don’t leave food out - the hot weather can encourage nasty bugs and bacteria on left out food, so make sure their food is only down for dinner time

While 30°C may sound like bliss to some of us, your dog may struggle in the heat this week. To keep them safe and minimise the risk of heatstroke try:

☀️ reducing exercise - walk them in the early hours, late evening or even not at all
💧 keeping them hydrated - make sure their water bowls are clean and topped up with cool water and put a few more bowls out if necessary
☀️ keeping the house cool - keep blinds closed, fans on and windows open (so long as they can’t escape)
💧 grooming them often - brushing can help dogs with thick or long fur regulate their temperature
☀️ keeping them cool - cool mats, sprinklers in the garden and cool treats can help cool your dog down

We had the lovely Phoebe in for her laparoscopic (or keyhole) spay recently, which turned out to be the 3000th one we had done at our practice!

Laparoscopic spays have many benefits over their midline counterpart, including:

💙 incision holes are much smaller and require fewer stitches
🩷 less painful as internal tissues are handled less
💙 most pets recover much quicker and are back to normal exercise in a couple of days
🩷 most pets don’t need an elizabethan cone or pet suit on recovery
💙 better visualisation of ovaries and organs for the surgeon = better surgery for your pet!

For more information on our laparoscopic spay procedures, please call us on 01926 423161 and speak to one of the team 🐾

Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

We had a poorly kitty handed in earlier this week. Sadly his injuries were too severe, so he was put to sleep to stop his suffering. He was a young neutered male, tabby colour, no microchip or collar. He was found in the Ladbroke area of Southam. If you know someone who may be missing him, please ask them to call us on 01926 423161.

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

To learn more about grass seeds, and our four simple steps for dealing with them, read our helpful advice article here: https://bit.ly/3zAdaOP

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Read our tips below on keeping your pet hydrated and how to spot the symptoms of dehydration in your dog, cat or rabbit.

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

Read more about atopic dermatitis and how your vet can help here: https://www.medivetgroup.com/pet-care/pet-advice/skin-allergies-atopy/

The law is changing - from 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old. What better way to participate this year’s than to spend some time with your pets?

This year’s theme, Movement: moving for our mental health, encourages people to move in a way that suits them. Whether you’re taking your dog for a walk or playing games with your cat, being physically active is great for our minds and bodies. It's also a great way to bond with your pet.

Increased physical activity is not the only mental health benefit of spending time with your pet. Read our article on the six other mental health benefits of being a pet owner here: https://www.medivetgroup.com/pet-care/pet-advice/six-ways-pet-ownership-benefits-your-mental-health/

Dogs can pick up kennel cough multiple times throughout their lives, but in most cases, they can recover in a few weeks.

During this time, you should encourage your dog to rest and avoid collar and lead activity as it could put more strain on their respiratory system. You should talk to your vet if your dog’s cough persists, or if you notice any changes in behaviour such as a reduced appetite or less energy.

Our article on kennel cough explains more about the infection, what to look out for, and how to treat it. Read more here: https://bit.ly/44CKnV0

May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month. Our nurses do so many amazing things behind the scenes. Each one is a credit to our practice and they don’t always get the thanks they deserve. The long hours, dealing with unholy messes and going home worrying about patients are just some of the things they have to deal with on a daily basis, but they still come back and work their hardest because they care! Thank you team ❤️

This is the lovely Mila having a post op snooze on our nurse Lucy. Mila came to us for a keyhole spay. Spaying reduces the risk of certain cancers and life threatening womb infections. The keyhole technique is minimally invasive and so recovery is much quicker than the traditional midline spay. We hope Mila is doing well and back to her normal waggy self! Check out on Instagram.

Is your rabbit protected against Myxomatosis? This highly infectious viral disease has a very high mortality rate and can leave your rabbit prone to other infections.

The best way to protect your rabbit is to vaccinate them, especially as there is no cure if your rabbit becomes infected. There's also ways to reduce the risk of your rabbit catching the virus.

You can read more about them, and Myxomatosis, in our advice article here: https://bit.ly/4blrPLu
