This Week’s Myth:
"Pain can always be objectively measured based on physical findings."

FACT: Pain is what the patient says it is.

This groundbreaking statement comes from Margo McCaffery, a renowned medical nurse and pain educator, who first defined pain this way back in 1968—and it’s still true today!

Pain is a personal experience that can’t always be fully explained by physical tests or images. Instead, we must listen to our canine patients and treat pain based on what they express, and this requires a level of understanding of our dog's body language and behaviour, which can be often misinterpreted!

This approach goes against the traditional idea that physical evidence alone should dictate pain management, proving that understanding our dog's experience is key to effective care.

Let’s bust these myths together and make life better for our pups! 🐕✨

We’re giving our beloved Blunt Mondays a fresh new twist— say hello to Myth Mondays! 🎉

Every Monday, we’ll tackle common myths about canine arthritis and pain, replacing misconceptions with facts that can help your furry friends live their best lives 🐾

This Week’s Myth:
“My dog can’t be in pain because they’re still running around.”

Fact: Dogs are incredible at hiding pain, and adrenaline from activities like running or playing can temporarily mask their discomfort. Just because your dog is active doesn’t mean they’re pain-free. Look out for subtle signs like stiffness, limping, or hesitation—they could be telling you more than you think.

Let’s bust these myths together and make life better for our pups! 🐕✨

❗️RAWHIDE❗️

POSSIBLY THE MOST DANGEROUS DOG TREAT ON THE PLANET!

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.
If that wasn`t bad enough they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Leave them in the shop or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away and then dispose in the bin!

Helping to improve your pets health and wellbeing

After being a human physiotherapist for over 20 years I decided to retrain to be able to treat animals. I am a bit of a crazy dog lover so being able to spend my days helping them recover from injuries or improve arthritis is amazing. A typical first session would consist of me coming to your home for roughly an hour. I would get a detailed history from you on your dogs issues, talk about how they travel, sleep, exercise etc, what they eat, what medications and supplements they take in order to build a complete picture of your dog. Then I would look at how your dog moves, sits, walks and trots followed by a hands on assessment of the joints and soft tissues to check for any pain or restrictions in movement. Once the assessment is complete I would discuss with you my findings and work out a suitable treatment plan. Treatment may involve exercises, soft tissue massage or myofascial release, laser therapy or joint mobilisations. I would provide you as the owner with homework to do between sessions and would give advice on any modifications I would feel are needed in the home or in your exercise regime. A plan in terms of the number of sessions and frequency would be discussed.
