After being a human physiotherapist for over 20 years I decided to retrain to be able to treat animals. I am a bit of a crazy dog lover so being able to spend my days helping them recover from injuries or improve arthritis is amazing. A typical first session would consist of me coming to your home for roughly an hour. I would get a detailed history from you on your dogs issues, talk about how they travel, sleep, exercise etc, what they eat, what medications and supplements they take in order to build a complete picture of your dog. Then I would look at how your dog moves, sits, walks and trots followed by a hands on assessment of the joints and soft tissues to check for any pain or restrictions in movement. Once the assessment is complete I would discuss with you my findings and work out a suitable treatment plan. Treatment may involve exercises, soft tissue massage or myofascial release, laser therapy or joint mobilisations. I would provide you as the owner with homework to do between sessions and would give advice on any modifications I would feel are needed in the home or in your exercise regime. A plan in terms of the number of sessions and frequency would be discussed.
