2025 bookings are flying in!
HOLIDAY COVERS....

Plan ahead and book fast.
My bookings already go up until August 😬

I've seen a lot of posts recently asking for cover and had messages asking for cover over CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR.
It's far too late to book those in now. Any good, reliable, and trustworthy freelancer will be booked up!
THINK AHEAD NOW!

My holiday covers are mainly tailored to small private yards. However, I'm happy to support bigger yards if they feel my procing works for them.

I charge per job I do. Not per hour. This is key qhwn booking with me as it means you get exactly what you ask for. Rather than me running out of time and leaving things not done!

A deposit is taken, so your booking is always secured, and I have clients throughout Surrey who can shout about my reliability.
I also take on emergency situations at the last minute if I'm able to. I have run a whole yard previously with just a drawing on a map and a text message!

I'VE HEARD ALL THE RUMOURS AND IM HERE TO ADDRESS THEM....

20 months of building, I have transformed my yard. I have put blood, sweat, and tears into my little home from home. Along with my friends and family.

I can assure you all that I am not going anywhere. No need to worry about me, I always cross all my T's and dot all my I's.

In fact, I will be expanding!!!

There will not be any land to rent, etc. I will continue to make my little space amazing for me, my horses, and my clients.

I am so proud of what I have been able to achieve in a short space of time. I am also so grateful to those who have supported me, helped build, and have even backed me financially. The belief each and every one of you has in me pushes me to continue making the best little place for everyone to enjoy their horses.

Here is to another 20 months at least πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

HAPPY 3 YEARS TO ME AND ECHO πŸ₯°β€οΈπŸ§‘β™₯️πŸ₯°

I can't believe how far we've come this year. Every day, I think and say out loud, "Couldn't of done that when I got you," "can't believe I can just walk behind you," and "look at us cantering"

She's certainly the Princess of the yard, and I don't want that to ever change.

Here's to us, baby girl, we made it πŸ₯‚

I am so glad October is over 🧑

New horses all settled in.
The fluffiest 2 year old.
And another orange girl to add to the clan.

I can't wait to watch the little one grow and the orange girl transform after her injury!

Obviously threw in a picture of Echo for good measure!

Topline!

Let me break a myth that keeps being said to me: If we feed them more, the top line will come.
No
You can't feed topline.

Topline comes from muscle. To build a muscle, you have to work it. To create a correct topline over the back, your horse has to be worked correctly. Pushing from behind, be kept supple through the body and able to accept a contact.

I'm not going to go into the how's of this. But the gist is that the horse must be working correctly along with being fit and healthy to create a topline.

If your horse has a dip in its back or a pointy bum or a u shaped neck (other variations available πŸ˜…) It doesn't mean it's under weight necessarily, it probably means it's dropped muscle.

Yes, with work, you need to feed more depending on the amount and pressure the horse is under. For horses in work 6 days a week and out competing, you are most likely to need a hard feed.
Would you want to be in the gym six days a week and told you are only allowed a handful of veg twice a day?
Happy hackers can also need a feed to supplement the energy they need to get up hills. However, unless it's working properly out and about, there won't be a topline
A horse in no work and living its best life in a field probably doesn't need much else... but said horse is probably not going to have a top line.

Again, it's not one thing that fits all. Do what is needed for your goals and your horses needs. But don't think you need to feed them to build muscle. We feed them to give them the nutrients needed to perform. which, in turn, leads to building muscle.

CONSISTENCY
I use this word all the time, but what does it actually mean to be consistent?
And how much do you really have to do to be consistent?

Winter is drawing in, and now more than ever, it's going to get harder for everyone. The weather is horrible. Day light hours fading. Costs go up. S.A.D sets in.

However, 10 minutes a day is all you need to be consistent. Perhaps not even that.
But you have to be strict on yourself. You have to turn up. You have to make it your routine.

There is a 21/90 theory. It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it permanent. By starting now, you'll make it through winter easily 😏

The video above shows what consistency gets you. Yes, other factors play in like - blood, sweat, and tears. And I'm lucky. I have great facilities, I have time and I can afford to train regularly.
BUT
This hasn't always been the case, and all my horses have thrived. I haven't always had a school or time or money.
HOWEVER
I have always turned up and done the little things needed to keep my hy horses brain working and body developing.

It doesn't have to be HARD. Ground work done correctly for 10 minutes each day. Maybe when you're walking to and from the field.

The above videos are 5 months apart exactly. A regular week for Echo without going out and about is:
* loose lunge - 10 mins
* pessoa lunge - 15 mins
* gallops or stretch school - 20/30 mins
* schooling - 30/45 mins
* gallops or stretch school - 20/30 mins
* easy hack or groundwork over poles 10/30mins
* day off
REPEAT.

Now, it's not just workload that needs to be consistent.
Feed and supplements need to stay the same for long periods of time.
Your horses home needs to stay the same for long periods of time.
The people handling/riding regularly should stay the same for long periods of time.

If you keep changing things, then you can't expect your horse not to change. And this goes for all horses in any level of work. If you just want to hack on the weekend but do nothing in the week, behaviour is an issue. Fitness is an issue. Injury is more likely.

How do you make yourself consistent?

Side note: I'm so proud of Echo and how far we have come ❀️❀️❀️

AD-LIB hay
How can this be implemented in a yard?

As far as I'm concerned, ad-lib hay is having access to hay/haylage throughout the 24-hour period.

However, most yards feed at 5pm and don't come back until 8am. So how is this possible?
Quick note. IT ISNT.
Unless you employ a minion to sit throughout the night topping up each time a horse finishes its roughage at night!

Yep, some places offer a late night check. That's lovely. Normally, people live onsite to do this, but there are lots of places where staff do not live onsite, so this isn't visible.
And guess what!
Yard owners and managers/staff would like to have a small life away from the yard!

So ad-lib hay in a yard.
Many places these days charge by the KG, so if you want your horse to waste hay or haylage, you'll be paying a lot for the privilege!

I personally base my costs on 1 4 string large bale of hay or haylage per month per horse.
Most of mine are fed haylage, so I'll talk about that more so. I feed this because it's more digestible for their tummy's.

I'm going to base this on the biggest horse in my yard.
So 1 bale of haylage weighs around 250kg.
Horse gets 18kg per night. Over a 30-day period, that's 540kg. Nearly 2 bales - so I'm going to say that this is ad-lib. The horse is getting plenty for size.
Not to mention, I often leave my yard gone 6pm.

All mine have the following on top of the turnout.
Hay in the field - I use small bales for this, so I throw 1 to 2 sections per horse depending on time of year and grass growth.

Hay in tack up area - I have 2 hay feeders in there. Some horses are in there for an hour. And they happily munch away.

If horses are in their stabke for any reason longer than turn out times. Extra hay/haylage is given.

So from about 830am until 6pm, all horses are eating constantly. I know it goes beyond this because they have hay/haylage when they leave.

I personally believer this is adlib hay and the only way to implement it without late nights or 24/7 turnout.
Do you agree?

Thank you to The Hay Men for delivering great hay/haylage and straw no matter the weather. And for going out of their way to weigh me a bale and ensure I got my KG correct ❀️
