We are proud to support our local Service Dogs - We feel this poem sums it up well.

WAR DOG
To the memory of silent footprints
that beside us once did fall.
We pause but for a moment
and in reverence do recall.
For the hand that held the lead
they served our islands well
therefore we who do remain
will tell their stories.
Some did come home
along with us tails held high
while others left empty collars
in foreign soils now they silently lay.
They are forever our guardian angels
clad in soft and coloured furs
as present now in our hearts
as they ever and always were. 🎖🏅🥇

🦾 The Winning Strike. 🦾

A couple of months after we rescued the young misunderstood Malinois, who was just a few hours away from being put to sleep after his owners couldn’t cope with his over excited nature has received some great news… Strike….will be moving onto the next stage of this career.

The Team at Lechlade K9 Centre have worked hard to develop and educate Strike into the dog he is today.

Strike is on track to travel to Dubai to become licensed by the UAE Police Force to serve as an active working dog. 🇦🇪

A huge thanks must go to John & who very kindly sponsored Strikes food while he was with us after they fell in love with the story when we first announced our plans.

STAND-OFF-ISH

◾ Have you experienced situations where your dog has become stand-off-ish when you recall them when on a walk?

◾ Do they respond to your recall command but stop just arms reach away when you try to catch them?

◾ Do they know when it’s getting towards the end of the walk and start to avoid you, knowing they will be put back in the lead soon?

These are all quite common issues people are faced with and normally it’s because of historical “snatching” or “grabbing” at your dog when then come back to you, which in time will poison your recall as well as make it very difficult to catch them.

We recommend to many people that come to us with this issue that having a small training handle or training line attached to their collar while you overcome this problem, helps the dog to realised your not going to “snatch” or “grab” at their neck each time they come near you.

The basic idea is each time you recall your dog, they come to you, you gently take hold of the training handle before you acknowledge them with their reward. So the dog realised being caught = reward. We then advise you give your dog immediate freedom again so they realised being caught doesn’t always mean the freedom has ended.

Over a period of time with a frequent amount of repetitions your dog will become desensitised to the “snatching” and “grabbing” meaning they are happy to be caught, resulting in a more relaxed behaviour when it’s needed.

Practicing this will also make sure you get enough recall reps and rewards into your walks and training sessions.

Training Handles are available to purchase in reception.

REWARD

◾️ How many rewards and acknowledgments are we wasting each day?

◾️ It’s normal for us to create feeding times for our dog, similar to how we structure our own meal times, but have you ever thought about how many rewards and achievements we are missing out on by just placing a bowl of food in front of our dogs each day?

◾️ Next time you pour your dogs food into the bowl … look at how many single pieces of kibble there are in that bowl… Each piece could help you as an owner overcome some of the training issues you may be having with your dog.

◾️ When building a relationship and training a dog, food is a common reinforcement that our dog has to work hard for. Yet… several times a day we place a bowl of food in front of them and allow them to have it all for FREE!!

◾️ Using each piece of kibble one by one is time consuming I hear you say… and yes I agree with you…it is …. but how many minutes do you spend trying to catch your dog to come in from the garden? How many times do you tell your dog “No” when they are doing something wrong, how many times do you say your dogs name and not follow it up with a direction or guidance as to what you want from them?

◾️ Incorporating food into these day to day situations “trains 1 dog with 1 time frame” meaning not time is wasted.

◾️ Why not take some of your dogs food out on your walk and reward their recall, lead walking, focus and engagement during the walk… These single behaviour acknowledgements not only help create a well trained dog, but also help keep the value of food high and helps keep you as the owner relevant and needed.

◾️ BUT I feed RAW I hear you say… That’s not a problem… just needs you to be a-little more dedicated… and these sessions maybe slightly more restricted… but still doable …take the bowl of food with a spoon… and spoon feed the reward for the completion of the task… (there will always be an answer not an excuse)

I tend to always raise my puppies on a top quality dry food for this reason… as I have come to realise just how vital the multiple reward structure is when they are young. Later in life, if need be I am able to swap them onto a raw diet.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

◾️ Building a relationship with the dogs we work with is vital to the success of their education.

◾️ The dog and human relationship is what builds trust, confidence and the desire to work together.

◾️ There are many situations where we see a dog “want” its owner due to the owner providing food or something that is beneficial to the dog at that time… but the owner isn’t at all “needed” when life distractions come into the equation.

◾️ We regularly say that an owner should create a relationship that means your dogs “Needs” & “Craves” your presence in a healthy and controlled manner.

◾️The need to be around you.

◾️The need to look for the engagement and general interaction.

◾️ The need to learn what you have on offer, which will allow you to remain high on your dog’s reinforcement triangle, keeping you relevant, important and exciting to engage with…minimising external distractions and issues that commonly cause dog owners problems.

WHAT IS PLAY?

◾️ What does play mean to you and your dog?

◾️ Does it mean allowing your dog to have access to all their favorite toys when ever they want them?

◾️ Does it mean allowing your dog to raid the toy basket at 7pm each evening when you sit down to relax?

◾️ Does it mean taking a ball launcher on your walk and endlessly throwing the ball for them until exhaustion?

We believe play should be about interaction with meaning between both dog and handler. It should mean there is a balance of control, freedom, verbal and physical engagement.

Something that isn’t available to your dog all the time, but when it is, should be something your dog craves and should involve both of you being able to interact no matter what the distraction level or environmental setting is.

We recommend that you should engage your dog in at least 3 interactive play sessions each day, not only will this build enjoyment but it will help build the relationship between you and your dog.
