🐶 KEEPING DOGS AND CATS SAFE IN THE SUN🐱

💧 Always provide your pets with access to plentiful fresh water, and shade. You can use cooling mats/vests in addition to providing shaded spaces.

🚷☀️ Only walk your dogs during the early morning or late evening, when the temperature is much lower. Dogs will be very likely to get very dehydrated and suffer from heatstroke if walked during the day. Additionally, think about your dogs paws - the hot pavement could cause burns and blistering.

🐈 Groom long furred pets to make it easier for them to regulate their temperature.

🐶 If your dog enjoys water - a paddling pool is a great idea to help them cool off.

🧊 Frozen treats - provides both enrichment and a way to cool your pet! If you have kongs, you can stuff these with some of your dogs favourite food or treats and stick them in the freezer! You can also just use ice cube trays to freeze some treats for them.
Cats often enjoy lick-e-liks or similar treats frozen - plus it’s very cute to give them their own ice-lolly!

🚗 Remember to NEVER leave pets in the car. In this heat it is not acceptable, even with the windows down. If you come across an animal in a car showing signs of heat distress, you CAN call 999 to get urgent attention.

☀️ If any pet shows signs of heat stroke, contact your vet immediately. ☀️

Stay safe everyone!

☀️KEEPING SMALL ANIMALS SAFE IN THE HEAT☀️

In the next coming days, temperatures will be extremely high.
Please be prepared to take action for all pets.
Rabbits and guinea pigs, especially if kept outdoors, can be at particular risk. So what can we do to lessen this?

☁️⛱ Ensure access to shade at all times, move enclosures to shaded areas, allow access to a large, preferably grassy run (slabs/concrete/astroturf get extremely hot in the sun so avoid this flooring where possible).
You can make your own shade using parasols/thin sheets draped over parts of their run.
If you can - bring your pets inside, even if just during the hottest parts of the day. Keep windows closed and blinds down.

🧊 Provide ice bottles - stick those water bottles in the freezer today ready if you haven’t already. Take them out, cover with socks (to prevent ice burns) and lay around your enclosure. This allows a cool area for your pets to lie against.
Ceramic tiles can also be great for our pets to lie on (they can be put in the fridge too!). If you have any spare, it’s definitely worth adding them into the enclosure.

💦 Provide fresh, clean water in bowls. Water intake will increase in the heat, so multiple bowls of water should be provided within their enclosure. Change throughout the day where possible.
The metal tips on bottles can get extremely warm in the heat and prevent your pet from drinking.

🏠 Remove plastic hides. Plastic hides can get extremely hot in the sunshine.

🐇 Groom your pets - long haired guinea pigs and rabbits will benefit from a trim to help keep cool. The majority of rabbits at the moment will be shedding to get their summer coat - so a good brush can help rid them of excess fur. However it is important to note that you should NOT bathe your rabbits to keep them cool. They can easily go into a state of shock. It can however be helpful to dampen their ears if they feel hot using some cotton wool.

👁 Watch out for HEAT STROKE! See the image below for signs to look out for and always contact your vet as soon as you see signs.

🪰FLYSTRIKE🪰

Flystrike is a painful and, if left untreated, fatal condition caused by flies laying eggs on an animal - most commonly rabbits and guinea pigs. These quickly hatch into maggots, which burrow under the skin of their hosts.

Pets with dirty bottoms, or unclean enclosures are most at risk of flystrike. More risk factors include:

🪰Obese or arthritic animals that cannot clean themselves properly,
🪰Unwell animals especially those who have diarrhoea,
🪰Animals with open wounds.

Taking steps to prevent flystrike is vital. These can include:
🌟Checking pets at least twice daily in warm weather, especially around their rear and tail. If dirty, they should be inspected for fly eggs, then cleaned or have their fur clipped immediately.
🌟Toileting areas must be cleaned every day, housing and bedding fully cleaned at least once a week,
🌟Research your animals nutritional needs and feed them an appropriate diet to prevent obesity,
🌟Spay female rabbits - unneutered females may be more prone to flystrike,
🌟Apply a preventative solution to your rabbits coat such as REARGUARD - which protects your rabbit for 10 weeks.

If you do find that your pet is experiencing flystrike, immediate vet treatment is required. You can always call us for advice or to order preventative spot-ons on 01531633141.

☀️HEATSTROKE IN RABBITS AND GUINEA PIGS☀️

As the weather continues to warm up, it is very important to take extra measures to keep our small furry friends cool.

Rabbits in particular have thick coats and are very vulnerable to heat - in the wild they would find lovely cool burrows, but our companions need us to help! 🐇

Both rabbits and guinea pigs, as prey species, don’t like to show signs of illness - so they need to be checked at least twice a day to spot some early signs, which can include:

☀️Drooling or salivating
☀️Panting or being short of breath
☀️Lethargy
☀️Red, warm ears
☀️Wetness around the nose

Ensure your pets can move away from heat and sunlight (hutches can get extremely warm - ensure a large run is attached so they have free access to shaded, cool areas), provide access to cold drinking water at all times and offer vegetables from the fridge (cucumber in particular is a great hydrating snack!). Ice packs wrapped in towels can also be used to provide a cool surface for your pets to lie against.

If you see these signs contact your vet as soon as possible.

☀️☀️☀️☀️HEATSTROKE☀️☀️☀️☀️

In this beautiful sunny weather, we need to take precautions to ensure our furry friends are keeping cool.
Heatstroke is a serious illness that develops when an animal overheats and is unable to lower their body temperature.

Some of the most common triggers are:
☀️Overheating during exercise (accounts for most cases),
☀️Being outside for long periods during hot weather,
☀️ Being left in a hot car.

Some dog breeds are much more vulnerable to heatstroke than others - keep a close eye on dogs that are elderly, young, flat-faced breeds such as pugs, thick-coated breeds and giant breeds.

Ensure to keep your dogs inside or in shade during the hottest parts of the day, saving walks for early morning or later in the evening. Always provide free access to water.

If you do notice symptoms, try to keep them calm, lay them on a wet towel and contact your vet right away.
