What would the dogs do if something happened to me on a walk?
Walking through gates can be very exciting for some dogs. The anticipation can be too much, and they get over excited.
It is important to manage that excitement so we can keep them in a 'thinking brain' state.
'Find it' is one of the 1st things I teach any dog that starts walking with me, and it is something we play frequently on our walks.
What's your favourite calming game to play on walks?
One of our favourite recall games. Look at the speed on Curly!
Adding in some engagement games so this cheeky teen stays close after the recall.
Find it is one of our favourite games and we play it a lot on our walks. It's great for lowering arousal, it's a great mental activity, and it boosts confidence. Here, we are using it as a focus game around distractions when Mr Crow decided to join us. This added an extra level of distraction, and the Ginger Duo did amazing at maintaining focus. They are aware the crow is there but want to play the game.
I was throwing treats to the crow to move it away as it was getting a bit too brave and I wanted my dogs to succeed.
Does your dog love their ball a little too much?
Here's a video demonstrating an alternative game you can play.
We have worked super hard on recall, but pheasants are just too tempting.
I rewarded him heavily for coming back (even if it was a bit slow) and I have learnt that this walking spot is too hard of a distraction for him. If we return here I know to utilise my long line, and practice more engagement and recall. For now I am super proud of this lad as he has come a long way.

Check out this awesome loose lead walking.
Darcy joined us for puppy classes last year, and her owners have clearly continued with everything they learned. This little lady will be hopefully joining our group walks after we have got to know each other a bit more in solos.
It's so rewarding to see our pups and owners succeed.

Watch out and take extra care in the windy weather at the moment.
Double check your garden boundaries to make sure fences, walls, and bushes are still intact before you let you dog out.
The wind can also affect a dogs hearing, so keeping them closer or on a lead during a walk can help with this so it doesn't affect your recall
Wind can sometimes cause anxiety in dogs. It is a bit of a strange sensation being pushed by an invisible force.
On the other hand, you may find your dog goes a bit wild and may get the zoomies
Also be very careful in the areas you walk, especially in wooded areas, as there is the risk of falling trees. The same goes for wide, open, grassy areas where there is a risk of getting knocked over.
