Supervising Egress at an event a few weeks ago.

If your wanting the additional support of a Dog Unit on your event please make sure you make contact in plenty of time, and are clear in your expectations.

A good Handler will spend the time to explain the limitations and legalities of the role before agreeing to undertake any task.

What a week !!!!

Our third seminar with the great .randolph.393

Yet again, it was a jam-packed week of learning for both handlers, dogs, and decoys.

The start of the week saw the dogs help out on the Decoy Camp, including some special birthday nibbles for Mr Rigby.... his last time participating in such an event, he now gets to enjoy retirement.

It was then time for Brian and Gipsy to step up on the Building Better Dogs seminar.... and they certainly did not disappoint 👏 🙌 👌

Coping with the loss of your dog.

Over the years I’ve said goodbye to many patients at the end of their appointment, knowing I won’t see them again in this life, and I’ve grieved with many clients after the loss of a beloved dog. What these experiences have taught me is that grief in the beginning is persistent, you can’t cheat it, fool it, distract it or outwit it.

“Lean in”, I gently advise my clients, because to fight grief is to put off the inevitable. When I lost my 17-year-old terrier, Minnie, it took me 7 days before the grief came. My young daughter was confused, the answer was simple; “I loved her and I miss her”.

Now of course after the loss of a beloved dog, there may be all sorts of feelings; regret and trauma, anger or guilt, confusion and sometimes even relief. These emotions must of course be acknowledged and processed.

But grief has to be allowed into the room, it has to breathe and swell before eventually subsiding into a less overwhelming presence. The reason we don’t “get over” our grief, is because grief is quite simply love, but a love that has lost its home.

Love doesn’t exist without the pain of grief. And grief doesn’t exist without first knowing the joy of love. It’s just that when a darling dog passes over that rainbow bridge, we don’t know where all that love should go, so all that love sits there with us, intertwined with all those memories of a shared life. And that change of your present having to become your past is painful, yet we can’t do anything but stay within it.

They say time is a great healer, but we don’t ever heal from grief, instead, we just become accustomed to living with grief’s hum, the hum that holds the pain of a lost love.

Finally (and there is no timescale), this grief makes space for something else, for wonder at how great and deep and meaningful your time together on this earth truly was, and that is definitely worth leaning into.
