It's that time of year again... 🍂

What dangers are there for our pets in Autumn?

Wild Mushrooms
Some wild mushrooms are extremely toxic to pets, if you think that your pet has ingested a mushroom please make your way to the nearest vets as soon as possible. If you can, safely transport one of the mushrooms to the vets with you so they can work out what kind it is, and if it is toxic. This helps us make the most appropriate treatment plans as quickly as possible

Oaks & Acorns
These are often on the ground this time of year and can be easily picked up by dogs on a walk. The toxic ingredient is thought to be tannic acid, which can cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and lethargy. Ingested acorns can also cause an intestinal blockage.

Conkers
These are startling to fall off trees all around so it's important to keep an eye on your dogs to make sure they are not picking them up. While cases of poisoning from conkers are rare they do cause drooling, retching, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The other risk with conkers is that they may cause a blockage in the intestine if eaten.

Fallen Leaves
While your pet may love playing in piles of leaves, these can develop bacteria and mould when they are left in wet conditions, these can lead to stomach upset if eaten

Fleas
While we consider fleas to be a lower risk outside in the colder months they can become more of a risk indoors as we start to turn on our heating as just like us they like to be cosy! Make sure to continue with regular flea treatment or natural deterrents.

Rat Poison
Most rodenticides in the UK contain anti-coagulant compounds that interfere with a rat’s ability to clot its own blood. If ingested by our pets in the right amounts this can have the same effect on them which becomes very dangerous. If you think your pet ha ingested any sort of poison call us straight away and make sure you know exactly which type of poison it is. If you have the packaging then bring that with you but if not try to take a photo of the poison.

Visibility on Walks
As the days get shorter make sure you take measures to keep your pets visible in the dark. Light up collars, lights that attach to collars or harnesses, and reflective leads and coats are all good options for keeping safe on walks.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month! 🐶

Our vets and nurses are on hand to assess your pets level of pain and provide support and advice for you them, and for you. There are so many options available so we can make a plan of what would work best for your pet and get them feeling more comfortable today 💙

This is Grace!
This week Grace’s quick thinking saved the life of her cat lavender!

Lavender was not herself, shivering, and kept retching, Grace decided to check her mouth and saw that she had a stick stuck! Her mum called us straight away so that we could safely remove it. The vet was very impressed with Grace’s instinct and thinks she would make a fab vet in the future! 🤩

Well done Grace! ❤️

Choosing a Raw Diet! 🧐

Choosing a diet can be very difficult, especially if you’re not sure what to look for! We’ve compiled this list of advice to try and make the decision a little bit easier 😁

All reputable brands should have this information readily available!

If you’re trying to decide between a few that tick all the boxes then see which one will fit your lifestyle better, for example would you struggle to store bags of nuggets and would prefer a small tub? Or if your pet requires a large volume would it be easier for you to buy a brand that comes in a variety of sizes?
Are you able to weigh out mince or would you prefer to just count nuggets?

These are all really important things to consider when looking for a new food and making sure that it works for you.

If you need any advice or support remember our team is always happy to help 🐾

Raw Food Hygeine 🧼

One of the most worrying things about raw feeding tends to be the risks associated with handling raw meat, and this may put us off feeding this to our pets. This is also something that is often discussed in articles or stories about raw feeding.

Like anything worth doing, it is worth doing right!🤓

There are plenty of simple steps we can take at home to ensure this is as safe as possible for us and our pets. Hand hygiene, correct storage, and cleanliness of food bowls is all we need to give us that peace of mind.

And remember that unlike raw meat sold in supermarkets for us, raw food for pets should all be bacteria tested!🦠

🦴Raw Bones! 🦴

As part of Rawgust we're going to talk about raw bones, and the benefits that can have on your pet's teeth!

Dog's teeth are designed for chewing through meat and bones, and doing so also releases endorphins, making them feel happier 😁

Raw meaty bones can help to remove build up on teeth, as well as strengthen the teeth and jaw. Raw bones with meat and other tissues attached will rub against the teeth removing plaque and tartar, and keeping teeth healthy.

It is important to choose the right kind of bone for your pet to make sure that is is safe and beneficial for them. Below is a guide at what types of bones are suitable:
🦴Kittens, cats and small puppies - wing tips and chicken necks
🦴Puppies and small dogs - chicken wings
🦴Medium dogs - duck necks and chicken carcass
🦴Large dogs - lamb ribs
🦴Giant dogs - turkey necks

You can also try chicken or duck feet, mice, or chicks for cats or small dogs.

Always supervise your pet when they are chewing a bone, and never feed any bones that have been cooked or smoked. Cooked bones will become hard and brittle, and are therefore much more likely to cause damage to the digestive system. Raw bones are much more flexible and the meat around them provides a layer of protection when they are swallowed. Make sure to buy raw bones produced specially for pets from a reputable brand, as these have been bacteria tested 🦠

Not sure what to look for when choosing a raw diet? This is handy guide of things to check!

Do:
✅ Check whether it is a complete diet - this means that it contains everything your pet needs
✅ Check if it has been bacteria tested - these are tests that should be performed on all raw pet food to ensure it is free from salmonella, E Coli, campylobacter, and listeria. This is not a legal requirement but all reputable suppliers will perform these tests on all batches
✅ Follow the storage guidelines - frozen foods should be kept frozen at all times when not needed, do not allow them to defrost and be refrozen. Only defrost the amount that you need, and use this up within the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer
✅ Check the feeding guide to see how much they recommend feeding your pet per day, check out our post on feeding guidelines for more information!
✅ Always ensure good hand hygiene when handling raw food

Don't:
❌ Don't feed raw meat intended for human consumption, as this is intended to be cooked it will not have the bacteria testing discussed above. If you are making a DIY raw diet and buying meat from the supermarket or butchers, chat to us about the safest way to do this
❌ Don't leave any uneaten food out, if your pet has left some behind then dispose of it and wash their bowl
❌ Avoid changing diet suddenly, this can cause stomach upset in some pets such as diarrhoea. It can then be more difficult to tell if it the change in diet or the new food that is causing it

Let's talk feeding guidelines 🧐

These can sometimes be vague or confusing, so hopefully we can simplify this.
Every pet has slightly different requirements depending on species, breed, age, and activity level 🏋️‍♂️

As well as their bodyweight pets also have a body condition score, this tells us about their fitness level and weight distribution, so can be more helpful than just bodyweight alone. While every breed will have an 'ideal weight' this cannot always be applied to every individual. Two dogs of the same breed may have completely different body condition scores, and therefore require different amounts of food 🍽

All food is not created equal - The amount of food that your pet needs in one food type may be very different to the amount they require in a different brand or type. This is because their nutritional values are completely different. With raw food we can feed a percentage bodyweight, this is 5-10% of their bodyweight when they are puppies or kittens, and then reduces to 2-3% when they are adults being fed a complete adult diet.

All foods will have a feeding guide on the packet but if you're unsure we can help you calculate how much you should be feeding ⚖️

Why raw feeding? 🤔

Choosing a diet for your pet can be a very difficult decision, and we know that you want to know what's best for them. All pets are individuals and their dietary requirements are just as varied!

If you've struggled to find a diet that suits your pet, or find it hard to keep them at a healthy weight, then why not try a raw diet? You can ask our team about the benefits of feeding raw, as well as finding a raw diet that is the most appropriate for them!

He is a neutered male, tabby and white with 3 white paws. He is microchipped but these details are not up to date. He was found near Iveson Approach.

If you believe this may be your cat please get in touch with us as soon as possible.

This is lovely Binx ❤️

Binx came in because she was off her food, after some investigation we found that she had an intussusception😮

Intussusception is where part of the intestine slides into another part. This causes a blockage, and is very painful!

The vet performed surgery to repair this and Binx is now doing really well! She was so brave throughout her hospitalisation ❤️

How cute is little Bagel! 🥯 😍

He’s been in for his castration this week, he didn’t like the traditional plastic cone so he’s been in today with his very cute alternative! 🍊 Soft collars are a great alternative for pets who won’t tolerate the plastic cones, especially in cases where the pet shirts aren’t a suitable option 🤩

Bagel was also very interested in our summer display board, particularly the sausage! 😂
