No Longer In the Dog House

No Longer In the Dog House Welcome to NLDH.
1-2-1 Dog Training & Behaviour with Dawn BSc (Hons) Dog Behaviour & Training. Veterinary Recommended . Over 18 years hands on experience.

Areas covered North Leeds, & Wetherby District. No Longer in the Doghouse owned by Dawn Ash-Bunting BSc ABT. I'm proud to be a positive reward trainer with over 16 years hands on experience with all breeds of dogs. My work also includes working in the veterinary industry with behaviour and puppy training. After graduating with my BSc Degree in Dog Behaviour I continue to learn and gain new knowl

edge never standing still as our greater understanding of the dog world unfolds with new scientific research of our best friend. My ethos with every case is to look at the whole picture not just the behaviour and always using positive reward techniques to ensure a happy learning journey for the whole family. Together we will look at how your dog learns and how you can communicate with each other in a kind and effective way, making sure your dog's core needs are met such as enough sleep and using enrichment with nose and mind activities. I will provide you with new skills and knowledge which will ensure your dog is no longer in the dog house!

I cover North Leeds (Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Adel, Meanwood) and Wetherby District (Collingham, Boston Spa) for 1-2-1 training with classes at Kirk Deighton near Wetherby. However, I do have clients in other areas - please contact me for more information. Dawn & Dexter

Adventures with Dexter

Hattie is doing really well in her 1-2-1 training walks.

Her long line is only used now around people having picnics as food is too tempting around an Dachshund 🤣

We have worked on while she has been coming on our walks:

✅ Loose lead walking
✅ Barking at traffic
✅ Worried around big dogs.
✅ Recall

She also has a soft spot for her favourite spaniel.

We had a great NLDH Lifeskill’s on the go at Roundhay Park on Friday.

Open to anyone that has trained with NLDH before.

Roundhay Park is the ultimate distraction ground with a splash of fun along the way.

Yogi and Charlie our teens learning about appropriate play and also mums are also on the walk with them with all that distraction and smells!!

Of course Bea was on hand to keep the boys in check.

Well done everyone 👏

As the temperatures rise this week, please be careful about the potential for heat stroke (hyperthermia) in your dogs.

Heat stroke is a life threatening condition caused by a sudden rise in body temperature. It is usually caused by dogs being exercise on a hot day, being left in a car or in a conservatory. In certain breeds, like bulldogs, heat stroke can happen just from a dog being out in the garden, not even being exercised.

As heat stroke can be fatal, seeking emergency treatment is vital to increase your dog’s chance of survival.

Early signs to watch for are:
🐶 restlessness and distress
🐶 rapid breathing
🐶 drooling

As the condition worsens you may notice:
🐶 vomiting
🐶 unsteadiness on their feet and poor coordination
🐶 overheating (skin hot to touch)
🐶 blue-purple (cyanotic) or brick red gums
🐶 panting heavily
🐶 racing heart
🐶 seizures
🐶 collapse
🐶 unconsciousness

If your dog is showing any signs of heat stroke, set off to your vets or emergency out of hours clinic (ideally in an air conditioned car) and ring them to let them know you are on your way.

A warm welcome to Izzy

I’ve been helping her dads with:

✅ Routine.
✅ Toilet Training gone backwards.
✅ Home Alone
✅ Sleeping independently.

One step at a time for this little girl and then we focus on recall.

We can feel we have it all sorted with our puppies and then 6months hits and it all goes out the window.

Izzy’s parents was proactive by asking for help and support before her behaviours bigger. Especially home alone.

I can report her toileting in the home has gone, she is also happier sleeping in the living room in her nap times.

Baby steps of success 👏👏

Great post

Something everyone should know👇

We should always avoid putting dogs in uncomfortable situations. Regardless of whether they're muzzled or not.

Just because a muzzle negates the risk to others, doesn’t mean that it changes the way our dogs FEEL!

It’s so important to treat your dog as you would if there was still a high risk of injury to another being because in doing so you will be more likely to keep your dog out of situations you know they’re unlikely to be able to cope with.

👉 Your dog will still be uncomfortable with dogs even if they're muzzled.

👉 With a muzzle on, your dog will still be uncomfortable at the vet.

👉 If your dog was so fearful they tried to bite your neighbour before, they still might try with a muzzle on.

A muzzle is a MANAGEMENT TOOL that keeps dogs and others safe, but a muzzle alone doesn’t create emotional change. 💕

Putting on a muzzle doesn't mean we can throw everything at our dogs that we couldn't before, just because the risk to others is lower. We help our dogs grow in confidence and feel safe, not them. We do it with good management, great, ethical training, and considering whether our dogs will enjoy our situations.

Let me know if you agree! 💗

So a first for NLDH today…

I was invited to run a ‘All About Dog’s’ assembly today for key stage two.

With the help of Alma & Mazuk, Ruth & Costa and Rex the stuffed dog.

I’ve never been more nervous in my life talking about my comfort zone - dogs!

I have to say we actually smashed it👏👏

The kids loved it and asked lots of questions about dogs.

They even answered the questions from their teachers on how to say hello to dogs and when not to say hello to dogs.

Proud trainer moment.

Previous experience includes working for many years with her mentor Philippa Williams at Dogs For Life/Castleman Gundogs for 7 years after university starting as her student and progressing to her right hand person. Puppy development & training from birth through to adolescent. Working with Field Trial Champion Gundogs and Boarding Kennel onsite trainer. It was at Dogs for Life that she met her best friend Indiana, a fearful/reactive Labrador that taught her so much about going against the textbook of dog training. With Indy’s behavioural problems she has not been a easy dog to teach how to be in everyday life from a puppy to her senior years and she always keeps me on my toes with understand dog behaviour. Ive been the early walker, looking over my shoulder, wanting to enjoy life in a cafe environment & attend different training classes with great difficulty especially as a teenager.

With Indiana’s journey No Longer in the Doghouse was born.
