🐴💙 The Scales of Training 🐴💙

The scales of training are used to demonstrate how we train a horse to achieve ultimate balance and "throughness"

Dressage tests are designed to test each of these elements, with the lower levels focusing on the fundamentals of rhythm and suppleness, and the higher levels incorporating increasing demand for contact, impulsion, straightness, and ultimately collection.

If you look at an Intro test, for example, you'll notice that it only asks for basic movements in walk and trot. These tests only require the horse and rider to show rhythm and suppleness - the other elements are bonuses but the demands of the test at this level do not require a great degree of collection, for example.

At the other end of the scale, advanced movements such as piaffe and pirouette require incredible collection, straightness, impulsion, contact, suppleness and rhythm all at once to be executed correctly.

The Spanish Riding School, Vienna 🐴

The famous grey (although they look almost white!) Lipizzaner stallions and their riders put on the most spectacular performances here.

They perform amazing advanced classical dressage movements, including the levade, the capriole and courbette. Collectively, these movements are known as "haute ecole" (high school) or "airs above the ground".
