Work is well underway on the new veterinary ambulance the LED lighting is in the external beacons are fitted and Ben here is currently designing a bespoke travel cage which will be fitted with 2 escape hatches and anti slip flooring.

Remembering Alfie 🌈 🐾

We met Alfie over the Christmas period on a trip to the out of hours vets. Alfie was in severe pain with what was initially thought was a abcess in his front leg.

His mobility had declined greatly but ever the true warrior he allowed us to assit him to the pet ambulance for urgent treatment.

Fast forward a few days and alfies conditoned had worsened significantly. Alfie was transferred to a Specalist for xrays and scans where it was found that he had incurable cancer of the bone.

Surrounded by his family and the team at WYPA Alfie crossed the rainbow bridge 🌈

His family asked us to carry out Alfies end of life care and today we returned Alfie to the care of his family ❤️

His owner shared these kind words with us that we would like to share.

"Alfie was my whole life my friend and my 3rd child. We had to make one of the hardest choices of my life. The dignity and compassion shown to us and Alfie by Daniel and Leah from this intial meeting right the way through will never be forgotten and I will never be able to thank them enough. People don't realise the time and effort these guys give to animals and ensuring they get the best veterinary care. They held us together and treated Alfie like one of there own I will never forget them. They helped us when no one else would. Thank God this service exists and I hope they will continue to help many more pets just like Alfie"

Demand for the service was extremely high because many veterinary services were either closed or unable to reach certain areas.

The West Yorkshire Veterinary Ambulance service attended 13 patients during the recent snow.

Areas included Rochdale, Manchester, Wakefield, Leeds, York and Bradford.

We were able to keep the Ambulance service in operation during the adverse weather, thanks to our 4x4 capable vehicle.

Tinys Story Behind The Scenes 🐾

Tiny is a 14 year old male Rottweiler who presented with severe pain and lameness in his front leg and was unable to weight bare on this leg.

Xrays show an infection in the joint as well as ongoing osteoarthritis seen here within the blue area.

We are hopeful that with treatment Tinys pain can me managed and the infection treated with antibiotics.

We have seen Tiny several times since meeting him in the new year.

We are hoping for a speedy recovery and have everything crossed for him 🙏❤️🐾

Behind the scenes Alfies Story 🐾

We first met Alfie a stunning 5 year Saint Bernard's over the Christmas period. His owner had exhausted all avenues and was needing assistance to have Alfie treated for a suspected abcess on his front leg.

No one could help and his family were becoming increasingly worried about his condition.

On arrival it was apparent Alfie was in significant pain and would require pain management and careful handling. Some 40 minutes in and we had made small progress and successfully got Alfie outside and towards the veterinary ambulance. It was a cold bitter night but patience is key and we went at alfies pace to avoid further pain and injury.

Fast forward several days later we are contacted again by Alfies distraught family who informed us Alfie had sadly not improved and his condition had become significantly worse.

Upon arrival it was clear Alfies health had declined since our first meeting and his mobility now drastically compromised he was in significant pain.

Further investigation was now needed which required a trip to York. This meant having to assist with alfies transportation once more by which time was more difficult than the first time round due to his conditioning worsening.

After taking xrays a meeting was held between the veterinary staff and alfies family... the news unfortunately not good!

Poor Alfie had being diagnosed with Osteosarcoma an aggressive form of bone cancer. The news we all had feared.

Unfortunately the prognosis is poor in these circumstances and the decision was made to relief alfies suffering.

The images attached show just how aggressive the cancer had taken hold.

From our initial meeting to his final moments our on call veterinary team were by his side.

This story has being shared by alfies family's as they wished to express there gratitude. With there permission this story highlights the work we do here at West Yorkshire Pet Ambulance.

Both clinical and non clinical staff working tirelessly around the clock alongside our wonderful colleagues at veterinary hospitals across Yorkshire.
