Continuing on our "then" and "now" theme for Vet Nurse Awareness Month...

Meet Emma- One of our amazing exotic's nurses.

Emma started at Holly House 6 years ago as a Veterinary Care Assistant. Emma had always loved animals but never considered veterinary nursing until she decided she needed a career change after working with children for 10 years as a teacher and in nurseries.

She quickly became interested in doing her nursing qualification and was very lucky to be offered an apprenticeship 12 months after joining. During her training she developed a love for exotic species and now she is qualified she works at our Shadwell Exotics branch. Emma has acquired her own little menagerie of weird and wonderful pets! Emma is hoping to build on her nursing qualification in the future by completing an Exotics certificate. Emma loves her job and is so glad she made the career move when she did.

❗️RABBIT VACCINE UPDATE❗️

There have been reports of a new highly virulent strain of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease 2 (RHD2) in Europe. It is still unclear whether it is in the UK yet, and we have not seen any confirmed cases.

A new vaccine (Yurvac) has been released which helps give cover against classical and new variant RHD2 strains.

Stocks have been very limited in the UK, and the single dose vials have only recently become available, albeit in limited amounts.

It is important that rabbits still receive the standard Myxo-RHD vaccine which protects against myxomatosis, RHD strain 1 and RHD strain 2.

If rabbit carers wish to give the additional Yurvac vaccine, it must be given at least 2 weeks apart from the Myxo-RHD vaccine.

We have now received limited stock of the Yurvac RHD vaccine. If you would like to book your rabbit in, please call 0113 3224341 and ask for Alice or Emma. We may need to call you back to organise an appointment time. Our stocks are limited so we will need to prioritise already-registered rabbits and may need to limit the numbers per household.

To kick off our Vet Nurse Awareness month “Then” and “Now”….

Meet Laura – Our amazing Head Veterinary Nurse.

Laura began her journey at Holly House back in 2006, starting as a weekend veterinary care assistant. Her passion and dedication quickly became clear, and she soon joined us full-time before heading to college to train as a veterinary nurse. In 2014, she officially qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) — and she hasn’t looked back since!

Today, Laura is our Head Nurse, playing a key role at the hospital and leading our nursing team with skill, compassion, and experience. She’s also our cat advocate, always going the extra mile to ensure our feline patients receive the very best care. Laura has a special interest in oncology and end-of-life care, where her empathy and professionalism truly shine.

Beyond her work at Holly House, Laura has also volunteered with Worldwide Veterinary Services in India and Thailand, providing both emergency and routine care for street animals and owned pets in need — a true testament to her dedication to animal welfare across the globe.

At home, Laura is just as dedicated to animals — she shares her life with her four beloved cats: Joey, Mojo, Meeko, and Obi.

Thank you, Laura, for your hard work, leadership, and unwavering care. We’re so lucky to have you on the team!

Our Story

Holly House is an RCVS Accredited Small Animal Hospital, treating cats and dogs as well as a wide range of exotic pets, from rabbits to reptiles.

At our Street Lane hospital, we provide the only 24-hour onsite emergency service in North Leeds, as well as round-the-clock critical care for all our inpatients.

Due to popular demand, in April 2017 we opened a second clinic at the Moor Allerton Centre. Holly House Veterinary Clinic has 5 consulting rooms, separate dog, cat and 'small furry' waiting areas, a theatre suite, dedicated dental theatre complete with dental x-ray, an on-site CT scanner, and is situated just a mile down the road from our Street Lane Hospital.
