We had a fun day practicing our recall today! All my off lead dogs have great recall. This is based on a great relationship with me and a desire to want to be around me as I bring all the fun! 🤩 It’s great to be wacky and over the top when you say you’re recall que’s to show your dog that you are more fun than that squirrel over there or that pile of mud. It was Lomond’s first time off lead and having a run about with his friends. He really loved it and as he’s built up a good connection with me and we’ve been working on he’s recall on a short lead / long line and building eye contact. I know when it’s a good time to try it. Don’t feel that just because everyone else’s dog’s are off lead then you need to rush into it. The foundations of a good recall need to be worked on firstly to avoid any dangerous situations where your dog doesn’t have trust in you or hasn’t built a fun relationship with you to want to be around you when out in open spaces. #dogs #dogsarefun #happydogs #happydoghappylife #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips #recall #ownerdogbonding #ownerdogrelationship #likeforfollow #woodlandwalks #dogtraineruk #dogtrainerleeds #dogbehaviour #dogbodylanguage #ilovedogs #zoomies #whippet #goldenretriever #labrador
Two days post half marathon and I’m due back to work, trouble is I’m struggling to walk and that’s what a lot of my work involves! 😂
The benefits of having your dogs go on walks with me is that if a problem develops or a new customer comes to me with past issues, I know I need to help the dog with their issues rather than keeping them with other dogs potentially making the issue a bigger problem for that dog or other dogs. I’ve decided to take young Wilf out of the groups for the moment, as he’s a bit fearful of other dogs he sees in a distance or if they are coming towards him and he will bark quite a lot. If we keep flooding him over and over, the problem will just remain the same or get worse and it’s not pleasant for himself or anyone walking him. He’s going to do some shorter solo walks in quieter areas to help keep his arousal from tipping over the ‘edge of his bucket’ is a good way to think about it. I’m going to suggest this is implemented by his owner’s to allow him time to decompress and get to a calmer level and so that we’re all working together. Here we are also working out what kind of distance he is comfortable with so we can remain under threshold with his bucket and we are starting to make a connection with having no reaction to the scary stimulus and a reinforcer (reward). The continued practice of this pairing will be key in helping him to be more comfortable approaching dogs down the line. It’s not going to be easy thinking about the breed characteristics also, but we’ll give it a good go to help his owners have more enjoyable walks in future.
I’ve been doing puppy sessions with the very cute 17 week old Cockerpoo Ralph. At the end of the 2nd session I got his mum to show me his progress with boundary training/settling
After a couple of weeks practice, he has a great connection with his mat due to consistency in training and generalising the technique to different environments to make the behaviour even stronger.
On Sunday he went for a Sunday roast with his family in a busy pub and they practiced his settle on his mat with great success and even got a few comments from other owner’s trying to keep their dogs calm. Well done Ralph and his family👏 This is one reason I love my job! It gives me job satisfaction most of the time 😜
Here’s a little snippet of Ted’s progress. He’s been a star 🌟 today.
A year or so ago he would be lunging and barking at vehicles going past and as soon as he saw a dog in the distance he would do the same and walks were stressful for his owner’s .
We are now able to walk at a distance of a few metres from another dog without a fearful reaction and now because we’ve been working a long while on this technique, he voluntarily gives eye contact and he gets the reassurance from me that he is okay in that situation. Hopefully we can continue to make progress in closer proximity to other dogs. Well done Ted! 🌟
Hamish showing us some of his skills
Another puppy class ended at the weekend. Well done to Bobby, Bueno, Max and Milo.
Here’s two of the puppies showing us one of the skills learnt. ‘Hand touch’ is good to have in the toolbox for building a relationship with the owner and can be used while out on walks, off lead as a way of checking in with the owner and then they go off and have more fun again! It’s also a good alternative behaviour for things such as jumping up.
I'm a bit more traditional when it comes to technology. I like mi pen and paper!, but I'm enjoying messing about with reels! Some people ask, while out on our walks 'how are they so well behaved'. Well it's a relationship built on fun, affection, engagement with training skills and letting the dog have their own time to do what they like also without attachment to outcome. This mixture, I think is key to a great relationship with your dog #ilovedogs #fortheloveofdogs #experienceddoglady #dogtrainertips #focuseddog #dogsofleeds
