On a personal level, it's been a difficult year for me, but by far the hardest thing I've had to do was say goodbye to my much loved and trusted sidekick, Bessie. She was an integral part of Cookridge Canine Care when I set up as a daycare and boarding business, she helped nurture and shape the lives of the many pups and young dogs who came through our doors. When I stopped providing daycare and boarding services to focus solely on behaviour work, she was, when appropriate, called upon to be a calming influence to other more highly strung dogs. RIP Bessie 3/05/2009 - 3/05/2024

I've just dropped her off at Towerwood Vets, she is chipped. The vets will let me know the outcome of the call to the owners.

If you know of anyone who is looking for this lovely little bulldog please pass on my details. Found on Spen Lane, she's safe tonight but I'm sure she's missing her family, and vice versa.
The usual checks will be carried out tomorrow.

It was an absolute delight and honour to meet Coco and her brand new family last week.

Taking on a puppy is a huge responsibility and a lot of work, but if you get it right in the beginning, you'll reap the rewards long term. Coco's owners have made the perfect start with this gorgeous Collie 🥰

Well this job took me back to my teaching days - walking into a new class at the start of the year and being met by a bunch of pupils all eager to get my attention at the same time, and me rapidly trying to learn their names to help maintain some order! The only difference was, these pups are not human and they all live together. Loved it! 🥰

Do you need something to melt your heart? Are you ready to swoon and coo?

What do you get when you cross a German Shepherd with a Labrador/Shepherd X?

Although Wakefield is a little out of my usual catchment, I'm glad I went the distance to work with Bob and his family.
We all know that dogs have incredible powers of persuasion, but I think you'd be impressed with Bob's! Unfortunately, I've been sworn to secrecy, but if his owners read this post (particularly mum in law, Gail), you might get to find out what Bob's super power is! 🤞

I was working with this lovely spaniel, Peach, and her owners today when a little black cat marched over to us. It's intentions were clear, it needed a hug from Peach! 🥰 After a few moments of rubs and sniffs, the cat walked off and allowed us on our way. Heartwarming! 🐶😼

This gorgeous five year old Dutch Shepherd dog is looking for an urgent foster/permanent home. She is very friendly and affectionate towards humans but cannot be housed with another dog. Unfortunately rescue centres are already overflowing so this is not currently an option. If you can help, know someone who can, or know of any rescue centres that are taking on urgent cases then please get in touch.
Thanks 🤞

I loved working with Bowie and Ottis last week. One of them is a super chilled out dude, the other is more highly strung but both have been trained beautifully by their owners. So, which one do you think is most likely to bark at you if you bumped into them in the street? 🐶

Meet Trigger the Lakeland Terrier, or little terror if you get on the wrong side of him! He lived the first eleven months of his life alone in a kennel before finding his new, loving family. Now at 16 months old he has formed such a dependence on his female owner that her husband can't get near her, not without facing the wrath of an angry dog! Trigger is now learning that sharing is caring 🥰

If variety is the spice of life then I think I've cracked it! Not only do the dogs I work with come in different shapes, sizes and colours but the reasons I'm asked to support the dogs and their owners are just as varied.

From helping reassure new owners that they're giving their new pups the best possible start, to calming dogs who love meeting new dogs and people a little too enthusiastically, right through to helping dogs overcome their fears and anxieties. Every dog is different and no two problems are identical.

Take a look at some of the spice in my life! 🥰

I met this eight week old bundle of pure joy when he had just been welcomed into his new home. It's never too early to start training a pup, and his owners just needed some reassurance that they had everything in place to set Ramsey off to the best possible start. 🥰

I first met Marley around four weeks ago. Originally he had been bred as a stud dog and had been housed, alone, in an outhouse until he was lucky enough to be taken in by his new owners, Chloe and Tom. With such poor socialisation, Marley can be aggressive towards new dogs and anxious around strangers. Four weeks on and dog and owners have clearly being putting the work in! Marley is learning to remain calm around both people and dogs and he even enjoyed a little frolic and photo shoot with Bessie.

I met this lovely Golden Retriever, Honey, last week. I really didn't see any behavioural issue here, Honey's owner just needed some reassurance after Honey was, allegedly, the instigator of a dog fight whilst at daycare. The first incident in her two years of attending. I say allegedly because the person responsible for the care and wellbeing of the dogs wasn't actually supervising them at the time, he/she was in another room in the house and only heard the commotion. To make matters worse, the dogs were feeding at the time and the other dog involved was new to the group. It really couldn't get any worse!

The owner of this home boarding/day care business was negligent in so many ways and clearly had no protocol in place for safely introducing new dogs to the group. It turns out he/she is not licensed and has no insurance.

It was a joy to meet this incredibly cute and very enthusiastic young dog, Evie. High energy dogs like Evie can be exhausting, but there are ways of draining that energy without having to; chase them endlessly round the house trying to retrieve the stolen sock, tea towel, remote control etc., stop them licking to death every person they come into contact with, or spend hours a day walking them (which generally doesn't work anyway). Mental stimulation, such as tracking, foraging and digging helps relieve boredom and stress in dogs whilst allowing them to fulfill their natural instincts and urges. Evie loved using her nose to track some food and her brain to work out how to get the buried treasure (it was in a rolled up cloth).

I'm guilty of not posting anything for a while, but how's this to get me back on track? 🥰
Little Rex has been doing some lovely lead work, heeling beautifully, as well as learning the sit and stay commands. All under the watchful eye of his new big sister, the gorgeous Robin.

Just goes to show that with commitment and dedication you and your dog can achieve anything! Huge congratulations Amber and Lexie! 🥰

Hello, it's been a while but just wanted to give you a quick update. Today we completed the Big Dog Walk with 6 Shih tzu's! Lexie being one of them. Without you there is no way we could have done it. She did so well and she has her word down so well. We crossed dogs, went between dogs and had no reacting. Just wanted to say a massive thank you again. 😊 x

Anyone who gives a home to a rescue dog will no doubt tell you that's it's one of the most rewarding and, in some cases, challenging things they have done. When you offer a new life to a dog from abroad, you don't even have the luxury of meeting it first. It takes a special kind of person to take on such a huge commitment (in my opinion). Kudos to all those who rescue dogs!

I'm sure all Vizsla fanatics out there will agree, they're an intelligent, fun loving, energetic and affectionate breed who can also be vocal, headstrong and demanding! Young Cooper is, without doubt, all of the above. He's the perfect pet until he wants something or until he decides he's not listening any more 😄.
This afternoon he's been learning how to follow instructions in a fun and rewarding way and how to work as a team/partnership when he's on lead. He did so well!
