Meet Odahviing! Odah was seen as a referral by exotic vet Harriet and registered veterinary nurse Katie to remove her ovaries after extensive work up by her own vets with advice from our vet Tom. She was initially seen to be eating stones and things she shouldn't be! Bloods and imaging identified the problem as being pre-ovulatory follicular stasis (one of her ovaries had gone into overdrive). Odah had a brief hospital stay after her surgery and we are pleased to say after a period of recovery and nursing by her dedicated owners, she is back to her normal non-stone eating ways.

Luigina is a very special bearded dragon that was referred from her normal vets to see exotic vet Harriet for a change in her eating and pooing habits. After a series of tests it was suspected Luigina was suffering from a condition called pre-ovulatory follicular stasis and had developed some large and abnormal ovarian follicles. She underwent a procedure to remove her ovaries and we are pleased to say she is now feeling much better and back to her normal self!

This is the beautiful Matilda, she is a 10 year old Shih Tzu that came to us for a full oral assessment. She was diagnosed with periodontitis and we found 2 unerupted premolars with associated dentigerous cysts - these are odontogenic cysts initially formed around the crown of a partially erupted or unerupted tooth.
Treatment involves surgical removal of the unerupted tooth and curettage to remove the cystic wall. The defect may then be filled with bone grafting material.
On Matilda's x-ray you can see the unerupted tooth and the black shadow which indicates a cystic lesion (green arrows). As you can see, dental radiographs are key in identifying issues below the gum line.

This is the lovely Atticus, he is a 12 year old miniature Schnauzer. He came in last week for a dental procedure due to a slab fracture of his right upper carnassial (108) and a chip to his left upper carnassial (208). Radiographs were taken to confirm the teeth were still healthy endodontically. Martyna (Our dentistry certificate holder) then proceeded to apply a composite on 108 and bonded sealant on 208. Similar to human dentistry, placing a composite on a tooth will prevent that tooth from infection and sensitivity and avoid extraction. The 3rd photo shows 108 post composite.

This is Kiki, she is a lovely 4 year old Cockapoo who presented to our emergency team with acute onset paraparesis. She was hospitalised overnight with intravenous fluids and pain relief and then assessed by our surgical team the following morning. A CT scan was performed and showed an extruding disc at L4/L5. Our surgical certificate holder, Roger, then performed a hemilaminectomy. She made a great recovery and was walking independently 4 days post-op. Pictured below is Kiki's CT image showing the extruded disc material.

Screwball and Bounty are royal pythons also known as ball pythons. They recently came in for health checks with Vet Imogen at our Ilkley branch. We recommend annual health checks every year for pet reptiles as medical problems are more easily treated if detected at an early stage. Look at their beautiful colours!

Great work Amy!

Recently our Practice Director, Amy contributed to a textbook titled Practical Veterinary Welfare. She coauthored a chapter on Veterinary Team Welfare using the experience she has developed looking after our team for the last 16 years. We are fortunate that Amy is a qualified coach and offers one to one coaching, team coaching, mental health first aid and Schwartz Rounds to our team to help keep them in tip top shape to look after your pets.

Atlas came to see one of our exotic vets Tom as an emergency after he sustained an injury to his face and left eye. He has been a star patient and his owners have been very diligent giving him eye drops and oral medication several times as day. His corneal ulcer has now healed and although he will always have some scarring to his left eye, there is no longer any pain or swelling causing him discomfort.
