❓My dog had to be clipped short and now he’s upset and behaving strangely. What did my groomer do to him!?❓

A question I regularly get asked so I thought I’d share some knowledge here.

The answer is, your groomer has done nothing other than their job.

9 times out of 10, if we have to clip a dog off short, it is because they were matted or very knotty and the kindest thing to do was to take a clipper blade underneath those knots or matts to remove them.

When a dog is knotty or matted, their skin is being pulled and whilst removing the knots or matting is a relief, it feels really weird.

Depending on the severity of the knots or matts, if they were particularly bad, it’s very possible they were causing a lack of circulation to the skin, in which case it would feel like pins and needles all over their body. That’s not a nice sensation for anybody, let alone your dog who doesn’t understand why his body feels this way.

The best thing you can do is to act like everything is completely normal. If you behave like nothing has happened, the likelihood is that your dog will behave like nothing has happened too.

If your dogs behaviour has changed following a groom and the changes last more than a day or two, or if you are at all concerned, the best thing to do is to contact your vet for advice but I really hope this helps to explain why a dogs behaviour can change following a groom.

TICKS 🕷

With so many ticks around at the moment.... Here is some information regarding removal & preventing the little nasties 🐾

What are ticks?
Ticks are spider-like small parasites that suck blood from other animals. They have eight legs with an egg shaped body, which will become larger and darker when filled with blood. Unlike fleas, they don't fly or jump, instead they climb or drop on your pets coat when they brush past what they're sitting on.
Ticks are common in woodland and grassland and active throughout the year.

How do you remove a tick?
Tick bites can carry diseases so it's important to remove them straight away. When removing a tick, make sure not to squeeze the ticks body or leave the head in. If you squeeze its body this can push blood back into your pet, which will increase the chance of them getting a disease. The same goes for leaving the ticks head in. To avoid squeezing the body or leaving the head in, you'll need to twist the tick off using a tick removal tool. If you're unsure how to remove a tick please get in touch. Don't try to burn them off or use lotion to suffocate, as this won't stop the possibility of getting bacterial infections like Lyme disease.

What is Lyme disease?
A bacterial infection called Lyme disease is passed by ticks. Dogs, cats and humans can all get Lyme disease. If caught early, Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. If you think your dog has Lyme disease, contact your vet who will run tests and start a treatment.

How do I prevent my dog picking up ticks?
Ticks will bite and feed on your dog for up to a few days, and drop off once they've had enough. During this time it's possible the tick could give your pet a disease.
Stop ticks from biting your pet by using a tick treatment that either kills or repels if they attach. There are different types of treatments, such as spot on treatments or tablets. Ask your vet for the best treatment for your dog.
If we discover ticks on your dog during their groom we have tick twisters to remove them safely. There is an extra extra charge for this. We also offer a tick prevention shampoo, this will kill (but not remove!) any ticks on your dog and can repel them for up to 7 days. The shampoo is safe to use along side other preventative treatments and for dogs over 8 weeks of age.

If you cannot get a fine comb through your dog when brushing their coat then you may need to swap your techniques. (Daily Slicker brushing, then going over with a fine tooth comb is all you need to do to keep the matting at bay).

Most doodle owners love the long coated “ scruffy” look. But, the truth about it is it requires a LOT of maintenance at home and appointments at the grooming salon biweekly if not weekly for that Bathing, combing and blowouts of the coat . it’s important to understand that puppy hair can be easier to take care of, but as your doodle goes through their coat change at about 6 to 8 months of age and develops its adult coat it can be very difficult to keep the matting at bay. that’s why we like to meet you in the middle ..and provide you with a longer yet practical haircut for your doodle that will keep them fluffy and not having to be shaved every time they go to the groomer. 🌈⭐️

When booking your double coated breed in with a groomer, please ask if they do full de sheds, and not a simple wash and dry.
Yes, it will cost more. But the cost of poor grooming will be much more in the future.

Terms and conditions

When booking an appointment you are entering an agreement to follow my terms and conditions so please read carefully beforehand.

I love my customers and do my very best to give them the most thorough and positive experience possible. I am an experienced groomer and have worked very hard to keep up with regular CPD. I can only continue to look after your gorgeous four legged family members if you do your bit at home and remember your appointments or cancel them with 48 hours notice. Without this I lose money as i can’t fill the appointment slot.

I have noticed a surge in no shows and last minute cancellations recently and it leaves my business in a precarious position, especially at this expensive time.

I will try and send out reminders to everyone but it is ultimately down to you to remember your appointment date and time to avoid a late cancellation fee.

All grooming prices are "from" which means they can be higher in cases where your dog is matted, is found to have a fleas, have behavioural issues or due to a chosen style

Being a self employed small business i do depend on every appointment i have. If you have to cancel or reschedule your appointment i do appreciate it if you can give me at least 48 hours notice so i then have a chance of filling your appointment slot. If I am given less then 48 hours notice you may incur a 50% charge of your groom which would need to be paid prior to booking your next appointment. If I am given less than 24 hours notice you may incur a 100% charge of your groom which would need to be paid prior to booking your next appointment.

If your dog has fleas/ticks please treat them and your home prior to there appointment. Should your dog have an infestation which is discovered during the groom a surcharge of £15 will apply.

Due to the pain and discomfort your dog is suffering when heavily matted, i must groom in accordance with the animal Welfare Act 2006 and do what is the best for your dogs. Please note there are additional charges of for clipping off a matted dogs due to the extra pressure matts put in my equipment and blunting blades.

I do not groom pregnant dogs as the grooming process can become stressful for them and may cause risks to the pregnancy and welfare of your dog. If the pregnancy is concealed I will not responsible for any complications

I will not groom aggressive dogs, if aggression is concealed i reserve right to stop the grooming process at any time but you will still be charged for the appointment.

Please understand as much as i love what i do, I am a business. Income is obviously important to stay afloat especially during a time where all costs are constantly increasing.

🚨 FOXTAILS ARE DANGEROUS‼️

Please keep your dog out of overgrown grassy areas & be vigilant in checking your dog's fur for seeds. Be sure to check the fur between their toes. The most dangerous exposure is when dogs inhale a barbed seed. This can happen if your dog runs with its mouth wide open in a field of foxtails. Inhaled foxtail seeds can wind up in the lower airways of your dog's lungs.

✨ Puppy Grooming Intro✨

I have so many clients inquiring regarding puppy grooms 🐶💕 While I am so honoured that you trust and want to bring your new fur babies to me, I don’t do full grooms for puppies, however I do offer “grooming intros”.

Puppies are not born understanding the grooming process. Jumping right in to a full groom may traumatize them to the point they resent grooming all their lives. It's much better to gradually introduce them to grooming.

A “grooming intro” consists of a bath, blow out, nail trim and light brushing. The idea is to desensitize them to the loud noises, smells, being away from their owners for a short period. It’s VERY stressful for them. If your puppy has a bad first experience then this can affect them for the rest of their lives. Leading to high anxiety dogs (which are more prone to injury while getting groomed) and worst case scenario pricey sedated grooms 💸💸💸

💡 What can you do as pack leader to make this process easier for them?

✨BRUSH, BRUSH, and BRUSH some more✨ No really, it’s the owners responsibility to do maintenance brushing/combing at home 👉🏼 If your dog “doesn’t let” you bathe and brush them, how do you expect them to allow somebody else? They won’t, and they will see it as a punishment. Consistency is key. I WILL NOT TAKE ON MATTED PUPPIES.

✨ I recommend at MINIMUM, 2 grooming intros before attempting to book a full groom. This also isn’t a guarantee that they can be groomed after 2 intros as each puppy is different. Just like every toddler is different when getting a haircut. Only it’s a haircut, butt wash, nail trim and full body blast all in one sitting lol (See what I’m getting at?). Point being, grooming equipment is very sharp and dogs are unpredictable.
