do you use a lozenge?
do you know how it works?
I see this is so many cases where the horse resists the contact it can be due to the lozenge working the tongue and depressing the highly sensitive tongue muscles.

I stole the photo from someone else but I couldn't leave it without comment about what confused mechanics are going on here as a part of the mechanics series.

So here goes.
Firstly let's start with the bit. It's a balding gag (a loose ring running gag the eggbutt version is a cheltenham gag which are more common place).
It's slides on the cheeks and gives an over all lifting action though there is a huge amount of poll pressure. The over all action says to lift and there's then a crushing pressure on the palate in the middle of the up and down action.
There's should be a double rein, one on the 'snaffle' and one on the cheek ring so the gag pressure can only be engaged when needed and not hung on to so constant pressure is avoided.

They have obviously experienced their horse to be a giraffe with this bit due to the lifting action so instead of changing the bit for something more suitable. They kept the bit and in pure ignorance put a running / draw rein on the 'snaffle' ring. Maybe it's fashion As im seeing more and more draw reins being used especially in collecting rings.

The draw rein - a training aid for the lazy and impatient which creates over bent and poorly trained horses.
If they insist on being used should only be used with a snaffle. They exert a constant pressure on the bit to 'guide the horse into a more steady contact'. Basically they force the head down and the horse cannot escape the near constant poll pressure so submit by over bending.

This bit says up the reins say down.
This horse hasn't got a clue what question you want to ask down the end of the rein and I'm surprised if it hasn't had an argument with the rider over this.

Instead of botching together a contraption try using the correct bit, that suits the horse, rider and the question you want to ask.

A lot of clients I see have EOTRH and they nor their dentist have picked it up. Please always check your horses gums around the incisors. If you see increased visibility of the tooth (they look long) and / or blisters on gum around the root of the tooth please get a qualified veterinary dentist to x-ray the root. Your horse will be in so much pain and changing the bit may not help towards this!
