One of the most overlooked parts of dog training, teaching calm.
It's important to practise a range of activities, out and about, in social situations to teach your dog how to behave in public.
If you have visions of taking your dog to pubs, cafes, parks, and basically anywhere dog friendly, you need to work on calm and neutrality.
You can practise basic impulse control by teaching the 'leave it' and 'wait' commands.
You can teach your dog how to behave appropriately in a crowd, around dogs and other animals, by introducing them to different settings on the lead.
Sit back and watch the world go by with your dog. Drip feed treats or give praise when they are displaying the behaviour that you want.

Just like we teach our children manners, dogs need to learn too.

Reactive dog?
Three top tips to help you out:
โœ…๏ธ Obedience (sit, look, wait, recall to start). Master these commands with your dog. You will need them!

โœ…๏ธ Play at home & in secure areas - get your dog to engage with you, and get rid of pent-up energy before walks. Purchase a flirt pole. You want your dog to be interested in you.

โœ…๏ธ Structured walks - if you're all over the place, your dog will be, too.

Start each walk with 10 minutes of training to get your dog focused on you and working their brain. This could be heel work, recall, fetch, etc

If your dog does lose their mind, try not to pull the lead back. Pull up to gain control and put some distance between your dog and their trigger.

Good morning all ๐Ÿฅถ
As much as we'd love to do some break dancing and skidding along on our bums with your dogs, we're not risking it today.
There's bad ice on the roads in Markfield and surrounding, so for safety reasons, we won't be picking up dogs or doing lead work training today.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused. All payments can be carried over or refunded.

Try some fun activities with your dog, such as:
๐Ÿพ Make a snuffle box using your recycling & treats.
๐Ÿพ Hide & seek recall practise
๐Ÿพ Obedience training
๐Ÿพ Create a make shift obstacle course
๐Ÿพ Flirt pole fun (make one out of a mop and old teddy)
๐Ÿพ Teach a fun trick using a YouTube tutorial
๐Ÿพ Create a training schedule
๐Ÿพ Grab a cuppa and have a cuddle on the sofa with Netflix ๐Ÿคช

Walking on the lead...
There is no miracle solution to getting your dog to walk nicely on the lead. It takes hard work, consistency, and patience.

Before you consider tackling pulling and reactivity on the lead, you'll want to teach a solid 'heel' command off the lead.

The four most important commands, in our opinion, to set you up for success are:
- Heel
- Sit
- Wait / Stay
- Come (recall)
If you haven't got these commands sorted, you are going to struggle with on lead walking.

Which tools to use when walking your dog?
There are so many products on the market for dog walking that it can be confusing and overwhelming.
We find a slip lead or strong collar and lead work best with our dogs, but we have seen success with haltis, a figure of 8 nose lead and harnesses.
We don't work with prong collars or e collars at Bark Right, but these do have a place in some circumstances, such as farm dogs. An e collar can help to teach a dog to stay within a large area, creating an invisible barrier.

A harness is designed to allow the dogs shoulder and neck to move about and pull (for sledging, dragging, etc) so they will give your dog more power when they pull. But they don't make a dog pull more.
If your dog is trained to walk nicely, then a harness can be a good tool too. They can work well with a collar and a double clipped lead to give extra security and control.

Haltis and head collars are a useful tool for large, strong breeds such as a great dane. They won't train your dog not to pull, but they will give you more confidence & control when walking your dog and will mean you can get your dog out while you are in the training stages.

To improve your on lead walks, start with mastering off lead commands first.
Book a secure dog field (search on Google. They are everywhere) and let your dog run off pent-up energy before you train. This will massively improve your success.

Do your research when choosing a trainer.
Do their methods align with yours?
Here at Bark Right, we have researched, trained, and tested many different teaching methods from around the world. We have created our own method of training using the aspects of training that we agree with and that are proven to work.

A sound knowledge of dog behaviour
and communication is essential.
In most instances, the behaviour you are trying to correct is a result of your errors in marking and unintentionally rewarding negative behaviour.
