The last two are so important to me. As long as we can get our dogs to leave anything dangerous they may be about to pick up and get them back to our sides quickly, we can swerve most potential hazards and keep them safe ✨️💖

How I keep my dogs safe in the heat:-

1. Speak to the owners who know their dogs best to see how they cope with the heat.

2. Move my walks to earlier times and try to avoid midday walks.

3. Walk near a water source or in the shade where possible and consider whether the dogs on each walk will actually go in the water.

4. Bring water along with me on the walk and at the car.

5. Keep a close eye on all the dogs to make sure they are not overheating and cut the walk short if I think it's necessary.

6. My own dog wears a cooling vest/jacket if it's particularly hot but I don't rely on that being a miracle cure.

7. Take regular breaks in the shade

8. Encourage calm behaviour. Dogs don't always have the sense to known when they're too hot. They are also loving and really want to please you so they will often chase a ball or keep up with you even when they're struggling.

I thought this weight chart for dogs was really handy. The vets often tell us our dogs need to lose weight. I was told my labradoodle needed to lose weight because he gained 2kg and was looking 'rectangular'.. but he hadn't been in since before he was fully grown so they were going by his puppy weight 🤦‍♀️ and he was due a groom so his curls were hiding his waist line 😅He's definitely fine as he is.

He's on a raw food diet now and weighs the same but is less bloated and more energetic. Thanks to Wags in Oadby and GO Raw in Kibworth for the advice. Highly recommend both! ❤️

There has been a lot of speculation about the dog walking industry after a dog walker was sadly killed in Surrey recently.

I just wanted to post to say that I am deeply saddened by the news while also clarifying that, when a group of dogs are carefully matched together, it is the most lovely experience to see them have the best time out on their walks.

I was really lucky to have so much support when I joined this industry from Debs Waggy Tails and Koko's Trails who taught me loads about how to keep the dogs calm, let me shadow them and see how they matched their dogs together and always followed their instincts on whether a dog was right for their pack and chose the welfare of their dogs over their own interests.

It has been a journey that I have taken very slowly, often working with dogs one on one until I believe they are ready for group walks, giving each dog time to settle in before I will consider taking on any more, being honest about when a dog isn't right for the group and always putting the dogs comfort first and I genuinely believe that most dog walkers share these same values.

It's not an industry you get into to get rich and the dogs will always come first. If you're ever uncomfortable or concerned about anything to do with your dog's experience, just ask your dog walker. We're always going to want what's best for them ❤️

It's a funny old time where we put loads of pressure on ourselves and forget to enjoy the process. 💕

We're a diet free zone at Country Canines.

I use only natural, grain free treats on all my walks and I cook up my own special liver treats every few weeks for recall games as the dogs go crazy for them. (Don't try this at home: they're especially smelly 😂)
