Cardboard box enrichment ✨

Provides:
⭐️ Mental Stimulation - allowing your dogs to problem solve as they figure out how to access the food in the boxes. Engages natural curiosity and reduces boredom!

⭐️ Natural Behaviour Outlet - tearing and shredding mimic foraging and predator-prey behaviours. Provided a safe and acceptable outlet for dogs that enjoy destruction.

⭐️ Stress Relief - shredding can be self-soothing, this can be helpful for anxious, high-energy or easily over-stimulated dogs

⭐️ Low Impact - great for senior dogs, puppies or dogs on rest from intense exercise

⭐️ Confidence Building - perfect for shy/fearful dogs that may be worried by new objects

So, why not give it a go?? 👀

A prime example of social learning in action 😍

Social learning = a dog learning a behaviour from watching, or interacting with, other dogs, animals or humans that are carrying out the behaviour ✨

In this video you see Hunter watch as Ron runs to chase his ball… you see a little thinking time and then boom off he goes to join in the run.

Does Hunter know why he is running at this point? No. He’s still a pup and this is only his second time out with Ron. BUT… this is exactly how he learned how fun chasing a ball could be - from watching his ever enthusiastic older brother! ❤️

Can you think of any examples of social learning between your dog and his family or friends? 🧐

Say it again for the people in the back…

Reactivity training should be calm, comfortable and done at a pace suitable for the dog being trained!

Would you even know that Bruno here is reactive? There’s no explosion, no big borks… just a happy confident comfortable little dog ❤️

Being reactive doesn’t mean being “nasty” 🙃

Your dog can be reactive and still want to play with other dogs
Your dog can be reactive and love to snuggle with the family on the sofa
Your dog can be reactive and great with the grandkids
Your dog can be reactive and live fine with another dog

Reactivity references an over-reaction to something… not necessarily aggression towards that thing.

So if your dog barks every time they see another dog because they want to say hello… your dog is still reactive. And even though what is fuelling this is not fear but more likely frustration… we can still put in some work via training to help your dog feel more comfortable in this situation.

Because even the “softest” dog can be reactive!

If your dog barks at people or other dogs and you don’t understand how to help, drop me a message 📞

For some dogs, their walk might be the BEST part of their whole day ❤️

To make it better, you could add in some training drills, cleverly disguised as playtime. This way, your daily walk becomes more useful and less mundane for you and your dog 🐕

Top tips for surviving Christmas 🎅🏼

1️⃣ Stick to their usual walk
Try to keep this part of the day as normal as possible. Regular exercise helps burn off energy and provides a sense of routine amidst the festive madness.

2️⃣ Build in downtime
Dogs normally sleep for a large portion of the day, and Christmas excitement can easily lead to over-stimulation. Giving them a quiet space to rest and decompress will help keep them settled and relaxed.

3️⃣ Keep unsafe foods well out of reach
Even the best-behaved dogs can struggle to resist temptation on Christmas Day. With so much food around, management is key. Keep items like chocolate, mince pies, and other festive treats safely out of reach to avoid any emergencies.

4️⃣ Stay calm
While Christmas is magical, it can also be chaotic. The day may highlight areas where your dog could benefit from extra training, but remember, it’s not their fault. Try not to get frustrated, enjoy the moment, and know you can always reach out for training in the New Year ✨

This dog has taught me more than I could have ever imagined ❤️

Meet Ronnie, my rescued Doberman. Our walks have come a long way - believe me when I say it wasn't always this easy! Ron struggles with life, but he knows he's safe with us 🥰

We've put in countless hours of training and bonding, and walks are now enjoyable. Of course, some days are tougher than others - he's not a robot, after all! But our outdoor adventures are no longer a source of stress.

If you're struggling with your own emotional pup, send me a message to book a session. It could be life-changing! ❤️

Reactivity training shouldn’t make for good viewing 🧐

When done well… reactivity training is slow, calm and at a level where the dog is able to stay below threshold. In a world of social media, quick clicks and dopamine hits - this does not make for a very engaging watch!

This means that social media is FLOODED with dogs being put into damaging situations for the views! (Flooded with dogs being flooded!!)

Please don’t be fooled… reactivity training takes time and there is no overnight ethical fix but with compassion and patience we can achieve results ❤️

The biggest mistake most people make when teaching their dog to stay is…

Calling them to you for their reward in the early stages! By doing this, what you are really reinforcing is their recall. Therefore you end up with a dog that can only hold their stay for a short period of time.

Instead, return to them to provide the reward and then release them from their stay. Here they will learn to wait where you have asked, knowing you will be coming to them to reward their efforts. You are directly reinforcing the stay.
