🐶❗️Today is National Check the Chip Day❗️🐶 - a day to encourage owners to check that their dog’s microchip details are up to date.

❓Did you know?❓
It's a legal requirement to have any dog over the age of eight weeks microchipped and to keep your details up to date.

Puppies from breeders or dogs that have been rehomed are usually already microchipped and registered to who/where you got the dog from, and if this is the case, you should be provided with microchip details when you obtain the dog. It’s vital you update the details to be your own by contacting the company the microchip is registered with.
Then, if you move house or change your phone number you will also need to update the microchip details again.

An up-to-date microchip gives your dog a better chance of being returned to you if they get lost or stolen. Collars and tags can get lost or be removed but a microchip is permanent!

If you’re not sure which company your microchip is registered with, you can check here https://www.check-a-chip.co.uk. To do this you will need the microchip number which you may be able to find on documents such as your pet insurance, Kennel Club registration or your vets database.

Alternatively, if you can’t find your microchip number you will need to ask a vet, dog warden or rescue centre to scan your dog and provide you with the number.

You can find out more about the legal requirements for microchipping here https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-microchipped #:~:text=You%20can%20check%20the%20microchip,a%20dog%20warden.

Introducing “fake baby” with baby equipment

Practice putting the fake baby in and out of the equipment, interact with fake baby while it’s in the equipment. Reinforce your dog for disengagement and for calm behaviours around it.

The practice is more important than what you practice with.

You can use a doll, a small pillow, a pineapple or bottle wrapped in a baby blanket.

What really matters is practice the behaviours you will do when it’s a real baby.

The holy grail of longevity foods, protecting your dog like a suit of armour.🫐

Blueberries are an awesome source of prebiotic fiber and are chock-full of polyphenols. Studies have found that blueberries delay the aging process by promoting the repair of DNA strands.🧬 Diets supplemented with this blue antioxidant powerhouse can potentially sustain the body’s antioxidant levels and protect against oxidative damage💥, making them one of our top recommendations you can share from your refrigerator!

We use a lot of frozen blueberries as training treats, when fresh blueberries aren’t in season. But be forewarned: more than one blueberry for every two pounds of body weight a day (i.e., five blueberries for a ten-pound dog) can lead to completely benign dark blue p**p, so feed a few, then move on to other Longevity Foods, found in The Forever Dog LIFE, as healthy rewards.

🐕☀️ When is it safe to walk your dog? ☀️🐕

With the temperatures high, it’s important to be aware of when it can be potentially dangerous for your dog.

Some advice for when the temperatures are high:

🐾 At home never leave them outside unsupervised.
🐾 At home or on a walk make sure they have access to fresh drinking water.
🐾 Be aware of the signs of heatstroke.
🐾 Avoid walking your dog at the hottest times of the day.

Or email [email protected] or send a Facebook message.

Introducing baby equipment

Some dogs are very sensitive to changes in their environment while others don’t care at all. Introduce various equipment you will be using with your baby, one thing at a time.

Consider all features of the equipment and introduce these too -
Does it fold up?
Does it move?
Does it make sounds?

We want the dog to comfortable with the equipment in the house but not to be overly interested in them.
The goal is that your dog ignores the equipment and it just becomes part of the scenery of the house.

For dogs unsure or anxious about baby equipment or some of their features, create positive associations when introducing the equipment. To do this pair the exposure of the equipment with tasty treats.

I had a first session with Cyrill and his owners this weekend.

He gets very excited when visitors come or if he sees people in the street. This leads to jumping up at visitors and a lot pulling on walks. So we worked on strategies to help with this.

If you would like support with jumping up, loose lead walking or any other issues please get in touch! 🐶😀

⚠️ There is currently an increase in sickness bugs going round with dogs at the moment, it is thought to be due to the fact the water table is high, sewerage pipes are breaking and drains are overflowing.

1. Take out water on your walks with your dog, if they generally won’t drink do it at a time they are more relaxed, they need to feel safe to drink.

2. Ensure they are comfortable with the drinking apparatus in the house first, put it down on the ground rather than shoving the bottle towards them to drink.

3. If they are fussy with water it’s usually because its over chlorinated or they are looking for specific minerals so take bottled spring water (water stored in a glass bottle is generally better because of the plastic and dogs can often want to avoid certain plastics). It’s cheaper than a vet bill!

Avoid flooded areas, cross over if there are puddles if you know your dog will drink from them. Reward them for ignoring puddles.

Plastics are porous, meaning oils💧 become trapped in them. Unless they’re washed🧼 daily, which isn’t practical, the pet food stored inside will be spoiled by rancid oils.🩸Proper pet food storage is essential to blocking or delaying the development of degenerative chemical processes⚠️ and the growth of spoilage bacteria.

For info on how to store pet food properly, Comment STORAGE and we’ll message you the link to The Forever Dog LIFE where in "Chapter 1 - Feeding Your Pet: the section titled 'Food Storage' we cover the best ways to store your pet food toppers, treats, meals, or supplements💊. Ended the week with a 2nd visit to Dexter and his owners, and he’s come along brilliantly.

He had been struggling with pulling on the lead and reactivity based on lead frustration. Today, his lead walking was excellent and he had such great engagement with his owners. They’ve all done brilliantly! 😀🐶

Encouraging your dog to interact with their environment makes walks more engaging and can improve the bond between you and your dog. It’s also a fantastic way to increase your dogs confidence and build up their core body strength!

K9 Education Dog Training runs a great Parkour class where you can learn how to do this safely!

‼️ This is a popular dog walking spot - very worrying! Please take care if you walk your dog around Castle Hill park ‼️

URGENT… PLEASE TAKE CARE
This morning at 9.30am on Castle Hill Park, between Beaumont Leys and Anstey Leicester a serious attack took place by thieves attempting to steal dogs.
A man and a woman, so you would think ok?
One of our volunteers partners was walking their 4 little terriers (all EMDR dogs) when he was attacked with a machete, sustaining severe injuries to his arm, two broken fingers, hit over the head, kicked and punched. He is now awaiting surgery.
Miraculously he held onto the dogs, who at this point were covered in their owners blood.
A similar situation was reported by a lone female dog Walker a couple of weeks ago who managed to get help from a nearby house.
Police obviously aware but members of the public please be vigilant.
Dog thieves are prepared to attack to get what they want

As part of Dog Bite Prevention Week, let’s take a look at growling and why it’s important we understand and appreciate it.

Growling is part of the Canine Ladder of Communication. It helps us to recognise when a dog is uncomfortable about a situation and when they want space.

If a growl is ignored or punished the dog may progress up the ladder, resulting in them snapping or biting. Additionally, if a growl is ignored or punished, the dog may feel they are not listened to and instead begin to snap or bite without warning.

We need to appreciates a dog’s growl as an important form of communication but we also need to address the reason for the dog feeling the need to growl. In order to do so, we must observe the dog’s body language prior to the growl and take into account the situation. By doing this, we can work out why the dog is growling and try to avoid this happening in the future.

Please get in touch if you need help with understanding your dog’s body language or if you would like support with addressing a frequent growling occurrence i.e., resource guarding or regularly growling at a particular item or in a particular situation 😀🐶

09/04/2024

This week is Dog Bite Prevention Week. Dogs will rarely bite without warning so learning to read your dog’s body language is a great way to better understand your dog’s emotions and recognise situations that make your dog feel stressed or threatened.

If you haven’t already, take a look at the ‘Canine Ladder of Communication’ and memorise the stages.

Obviously dogs cannot talk but they constantly use their body language to communicate with us and other dogs. If we listen to the ‘whispers’ of the body language lower down the ladder and remove our dogs from situations that make them feel uncomfortable, then we can avoid the dog having to ‘shout’ i.e. snap or bite.

If you would like support with your dogs behaviour, get in touch! 😀🐶

⭐️🐶 Today is 🐶⭐️

A day to raise awareness that not all dogs have positive experiences on walks and highlight that there are other ways to physically and mentally exercise dogs at home.
Whats more, dog owners can sometimes feel under pressure to walk their dogs daily but it’s absolutely fine if you’re not able to walk your dog for whatever reason and instead you can use these suggestions too!

* Make a sensory area by putting items of different heights, widths and textures in an area and add in hidden treats and licky items for your dog to sniff out and find among the items.

* Create an obstacle course to encourage your dog to go under, over, around or through items.

* Food puzzles can be bought items such as Kongs and interactive toys, or something homemade like an egg box or a toilet roll with treats inside.

* Doggie push ups are cueing your dog into a sit, then into a down, then back to a sit and repeating the process, using treats as a reward.

* Play hide 'n seek with your dog by telling them to stay in one place while you hide. Then call them to find you and when they do, reward with a treat or a game of tug.

* Play over and under your legs by sitting on the floor with your legs raised and your feet pressed against a wall or on another surface. Your legs need to be raised enough that your dog can crawl underneath but not so raised that they're too high for your dog to jump over.
Then alternate tossing treats over and under your legs to encourage your dog to jump over and crawl underneath your legs to get the treats.

If you would like to learn more about enrichment and find out the best activities for your dog's breed and characteristics, and your lifestyle, you can book a 1 hour in-person session or a video call session 😀🐶
