👶🏼🐾 On Paternity Leave 🐾👶🏼

Just wanted to share that I’m currently on paternity leave, taking some time to welcome a new addition to my family.

I went to visit Gio and his owners for his 3rd 1-2-1 session. In the sessions we worked on strategies to help with mouthing and nipping, increasing engagement, loose lead walking, recall and many more 🐶🐾

🐶❗️Today is National Check the Chip Day❗️🐶 - a day to encourage owners to check that their dog’s microchip details are up to date.

❓Did you know?❓
It's a legal requirement to have any dog over the age of eight weeks microchipped and to keep your details up to date.

Puppies from breeders or dogs that have been rehomed are usually already microchipped and registered to who/where you got the dog from, and if this is the case, you should be provided with microchip details when you obtain the dog. It’s vital you update the details to be your own by contacting the company the microchip is registered with.
Then, if you move house or change your phone number you will also need to update the microchip details again.

An up-to-date microchip gives your dog a better chance of being returned to you if they get lost or stolen. Collars and tags can get lost or be removed but a microchip is permanent!

If you’re not sure which company your microchip is registered with, you can check here https://www.check-a-chip.co.uk. To do this you will need the microchip number which you may be able to find on documents such as your pet insurance, Kennel Club registration or your vets database.

Alternatively, if you can’t find your microchip number you will need to ask a vet, dog warden or rescue centre to scan your dog and provide you with the number.

We have recently had to transport dogs for emergency treatment, all thankfully fully recovered.
Here at More4Paws we offer emergency transport and routine transport to your vets. We are proud to work along side the RSPCA and Leicester City Council.

Today I had the pleasure of visiting the lovely Nelly and her guardians to help in preparation for the arrival of their new baby. Also with strategies to help baby and dog coexist happily when baby does arrive. 👶🏼🐕

🐕👶🏼 Preparing my dog for baby arrival 🐕👶🏼

Introducing “fake baby” with baby equipment

Practice putting the fake baby in and out of the equipment, interact with fake baby while it’s in the equipment. Reinforce your dog for disengagement and for calm behaviours around it.

The practice is more important than what you practice with.

You can use a doll, a small pillow, a pineapple or bottle wrapped in a baby blanket.

What really matters is practice the behaviours you will do when it’s a real baby.

🐕☀️ When is it safe to walk your dog? ☀️🐕

With the temperatures high, it’s important to be aware of when it can be potentially dangerous for your dog.

Some advice for when the temperatures are high:

🐾 At home never leave them outside unsupervised.
🐾 At home or on a walk make sure they have access to fresh drinking water.
🐾 Be aware of the signs of heatstroke.
🐾 Avoid walking your dog at the hottest times of the day.

🐕👶🏼 Preparing my dog for baby arrival 🐕👶🏼

Introducing baby equipment

Some dogs are very sensitive to changes in their environment while others don’t care at all. Introduce various equipment you will be using with your baby, one thing at a time.

Consider all features of the equipment and introduce these too -
Does it fold up?
Does it move?
Does it make sounds?

We want the dog to comfortable with the equipment in the house but not to be overly interested in them.
The goal is that your dog ignores the equipment and it just becomes part of the scenery of the house.

For dogs unsure or anxious about baby equipment or some of their features, create positive associations when introducing the equipment. To do this pair the exposure of the equipment with tasty treats.
