We had to improvise for the heat source due to lack of room to put a forge but other than that the procedure is the same.
Forging a Pair of Lamb’s Tongue Handrails
Forging lamb’s tongue handrails is an intricate and rewarding process that involves shaping metal into an elegant, functional design. The lamb’s tongue refers to the characteristic, gentle curve at the end of the rail, resembling the shape of a lamb’s tongue, which adds a decorative element to the handrail while also making it comfortable to grip.
Step 1: Material Selection
The first step in forging lamb’s tongue handrails is choosing the appropriate material. Steel is a common choice for handrails due to its strength, durability, and malleability when heated. Depending on the desired aesthetic and strength, you might opt for mild steel, wrought iron, or even stainless steel for a more modern finish.
Step 2: Preparing the Forge and Tools
Before beginning, ensure that your forge is at the correct temperature, typically around 1,800 to 2,000°F (980–1,090°C), for heating the metal. Essential tools for the task include a hammer, anvil, chisels, tongs, and a bending jig. A round or square stock of steel, sized appropriately for your handrails, will need to be prepared.
Step 3: Heating the Steel
Place the steel stock in the forge and heat it evenly until it reaches a malleable state. The heat allows the steel to become more pliable, enabling it to be shaped without cracking or breaking. Keep a careful eye on the temperature, as overheating or underheating the steel can lead to poor results.
Step 4: Shaping the Lamb’s Tongue
Once the metal has reached the desired temperature, remove it from the forge using tongs. Place it on the anvil, and with a hammer, begin to shape the end of the metal into the distinct curve that defines the lamb’s tongue. This step is critical, as it requires precision and control to achieve the smooth, elegant curve.
The technique often involves creating a slight taper or swelling at the end of the rail before carefully bending it into a gradual curve. The size of the curve and the way it blends into the rest of the handrail should be balanced to create a harmonious and functional design.
Step 5: Refining the Shape
After the basic curve is established, use a series of hammers and chisels to refine the lamb’s tongue’s shape, ensuring it’s both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to the hand. The edges may need to be smoothed out, and the overall contour may require fine-tuning to achieve a uniform, flowing curve.
Step 6: Cooling and Hardening
Once the forging process is complete, allow the handrails to cool slowly to prevent warping. After cooling, you may choose to quench the steel in water or oil for additional hardening, depending on the material used. However, for aesthetic reasons, quenching is typically avoided in the final form of lamb’s tongue handrails, as it can create a more matte finish.
Step 7: Final Assembly and Finish
Once the lamb’s tongue ends are forged and shaped, the handrails can be welded or bolted into place, depending on the design. The final finish may involve polishing or patinating the metal to achieve the desired texture and color. If you want a more refined look, you may apply a clear coat or protective layer to preserve the finish and prevent corrosion.
This process of forging lamb’s tongue handrails is both an art and a craft, combining the functionality of a sturdy handrail with the grace of a decorative design. With attention to detail, the end result is a beautiful and durable piece that will elevate any staircase or railing.
