It is with great sadness my beautiful little girl Quinn has sadly passed away in her sleep early this morning. She seemed perfectly fine yesterday and happy to take treats off me so quite a shock to find her gone this morning. She went in her sleep as she was curled up in her bed snuggled in. I will miss you my little girl. Fly free .Love mummy and all your friends. X XX.

My little girl Flynn is happy to be home after a trip to the vets because she has been sniffy and unwell. It seems that flynn hates the vets so much she decided to scare them by taking a big big breath and over dosing herself with sleepy meds and then bloated her tummy with air they gave her to counteract the sleep meds. Anyway after that episode the vet xrayed her to find out if her teeth were the problem but no. The problem is that she had a large cut on the roof of her mouth which was very sore. I have meds for her twice a day and being a caring mummy I gently fed her Critical Care via syringe so she didnt get hungry or hurt her mouth eating hard food. Hmmm the sore mouth didnt stop her chewing my syringe tip or the end of the syringe. Little rascal.

For the last few days I have been nursing a little girl who got beaten up by her cage mates. She was in a bad way more mentally than injuries which were pretty bad. I have been hand feeding her and giving her lots of cuddles in hope to help calm her but the sound of another Degu would scare her and she would try to hide. I have tried to put her in with some other sick Degus but she just went crazy with fear trying to jump up the bars to get away. It upset her and I never thought she would ever settle with another member of her own kind and I would be her only friend. Today I thought I would give it another try but the same thing happened so once again I put her back in her own cage. After she had settled down a little I took one of my poorly girls called Skinny Mini /Molly and placed her in Roses cage. Rose froze on the spot not daring to move awaiting to be attacked again. Molly went over and said hello then carried on doing her own thing and exploring her new cage . As she passed Rose now and then on her travel she sniffed her in passing but never forced herself on Rose. Rose hid away in the tunnel but Molly followed. I waited for the out break of fighting but all I got was Molly walking out the tube a few minutes later. I have been watching them all afternoon while I did my Degu snacks and for the first time in three days she ate something on her own. Tonight they made me cry with happyness when saw them both snuggled together. All my efforts had paid off and they gave me the best reward ever. The two of them happierly together.

The last final gift for my degus. Before my sister passed away she made me promise not to let her funeral flowers go to waste. That I was to take them home and enjoy them and their wonderful smell until they were nearly done. Then I had to dry them and use them for my degus as a final gift and goodbye.
My heart is breaking but I have done as she asked of me. Thank sis you are still being kind even after your death.

Sadly I am not allowed to bring in anymore needy degus in my home and feel so sad about it. But I am proud to say I can still do my bit for these beautiful babies. I managed to get two girls a new home with a lonely girl that needed a friend. Both owners contacted the rescue for help. I put them both in contact with each other and glad to say the lonely little girl is getting two new friends very soon. I will pat myself on the back for helping these degus find new happyness.

Just wanted to up date on Jade and Maisey after losing their friend Kookie. At first jade was looking for her and became a little unsettled and Maisey was her usual frightened little girl but I just carried on talking to them and giving treats which has paid off well. Jade has now become brave and shares the cage happerly with her best friend Maisey. Over the last few weeks Maisey has allowed me to stroke her while running in the wheel which was so exciting to know hopefully soon we would be best of friends and having kisses and cuddles like jade and I do. Two beautiful babies who I love dearly.

The three girls are getting on so well together. They dont sleep in the fleece beds I gave them but rather on top. Jade is very adventurous and loves going around the cage re dicovering the things in her new home. Poor little Maisey still runs away when I go in the cage but when she is in the wheel I get a little stroke and get a treat close to her. We have a little sad Kookie who seems to be missing her two little friends Quinn and Flynn. They too are not being their happy self either and worry they are not going to get to upset. Will have to try and sort something out for them all.

Today was a happy day for three new little friends. Kookie, Jade and Masiey. It took only a few minutes for them to settle and now they are all snuggling up together. Masiey is very shy and hides away but Jade is bold as brass and does what she wants. She is so friendly and loving and getting around her new cage without any trouble at all. WELL COME TO YOUR NEW HOME GIRLS.###X.

Here are my two new babies who will hopefully be arriving to their new home here soon. Just scapping some pennies together to pay adoption fees to help the rescue there coming from to cover costs. Cant wait just want to give them a good home and love them to bits. Kookie too will be happy having some new friends.

Our kookie is still waiting for her new friends to come but as we said poor Jade has to go to the vets to have her eye looked at as it is very poorly and their is a chance she will need to have it removed if the damage is unrepairable. Ofcourse we are all have our fingers crossed it will not be needed and will love and give her a warm loving home. Kookie and I have been chatting about the new lay out of the cage so that we can maximize the full use of the cage including the side spaces placing safty first, but making it an active an intesting home for the three of them. We think lots of tunnels connected around the cage would be great fun and very safe for all with J ades big house for them to share. Some new bridges and lots of chew toys and treats to make them feel content.

As most of you will know I have been looking for a little girl to move in with Kookie. After strearches and disappoints I think we have found two very perfect friends for her. One is a little girl Maisey who is so frightened of everything and sadly lost her Mummy suddenly and has been returned to The Degu Den Rescue. The other girl? Who is called Jade who also sadly lost her friend too and taken in by Janine and has suffered with a really poorly eye but she is being treated by a vet who knows his stuff and is doing all he can to make her better. Janine has got the two girls to make friends with each other and hopefully coming to live with us in the not to distance future. I am so excited and cant wait to meet them and get to know them and their magic ways.

So today I rescued the biggest degu ever. She is beautiful but bites I'm told.She will be safe here with me until Auntie Janine comes to take her to her new home. Sadly I have doggies who dont like Bunnies so I cant keep her. (Woops degu.) LOL.

Well I give up trying to find a old lady degu for a friend for Kookie. I have offered a home to a number of lady degus needing a home but they all fall through. I guess I live to far away from everyone. Sorry kookie I am trying to get you a friend but it just not happening.

Sadly Gizmo's condition deteriorated over night while staying at the vets. They found him this morning unable to stand and trying to crawl around on his side crying. His face was badly swollen and he had refused food and water all night. The vet said there was nothing they could do to make him better and he would not survive for much longer but was suffering a lot of pain. I agreed to set him free imedately so he was not suffering anymore. I am so heart broken to say the least. Three babies gone in two days. I dont feel like a very good mum at the moment. Thank you all for your support over the weeks and months.
I gave you your wings my darlin Gizmo. It has broke my heart to say goodbye but I had to set you free. Fly high my sweet boy.###X.

Today I have took poor Gizmo to the vets. He is still very unwell and dispite my feeding him several times a day and giving him his meds he has still has not improved much. He now has a large abcess inside his mouth and his teeth need trimming again. His eyes and nose are very swollen. He keeps shaking his head and is walking in tight circles. They are going to check him tomorrow and see if his health can be improved. It has only been 3 weeks since his last dental which is a short space of time. I feel like I am floating between good and bad. I want my boy home as I cant bare to think of him not being here with me. He and Pandora were my only Blues and I love them dearly.

Today has been a very bad day. All I wanted was to keep my home clean but now I feel like I have committed murder. My poor babies have passed away and my heart is breaking. Please forgive me my little ones. I meant you know harm just wanted us all to live in a clean home warm and comfy together. SORRY. ###X

I BOUGHT THESE TO USE FOR CLEANING MY BUNGALOW.

IT NEVER WENT ON THE DEGUS CAGE OR IN THE CAGE ANYWHERE NEAR BUT I THINK THE FUMES MAY OF KILLED MY DEGUS . I HAVE LOST TWO DEGUS WITHIN HOURS OF EACH OTHER. PLEASE PLEASE DONT RISK USING IT.

Just a quick up date on dear old Gizmo. Sadly he isa little less active but does get annoyed and shouts even nips me if I dont do as he wants. I am still encouraging to eat on his own which ofcourse he does but not enough to keep him going so I top him up with Critical Care which he seem to devour so quickly. He is plodding along doing a little excise even a turn in a wheel.

I think Gizmo is feeling a lot better today and is feeling hungry. So good to see my little boy eating on his own . Better get stocked up on Emeraid Critical Care food to keep him going. LOL.

At last Gizmo is home. He has root growth which is managable for now. He had one tooth removed which was loose and he had lots of little tooth growths which were growing in all directions were sticking into his tounge and gums making them very sore and swollen. He has very bad arthritis in his spine so will be on pain meds for the rest of his life. His heart and chest are clear and it is thought that his chest infection and gunky eye is all down to his tooth problems. He will need still hand feeding until he is able to eat on his own. The vet said he will need to have his teeth done on a regular basis, every 8/12 weeks to keep a check on them. I am really glad he has seen a vet who knows what he is doing. He looks so much better already.

I wouldnt say Gizmo is a messy eater but........ I love the way he holds his back leg up when his tummy is getting more tasty emeraid . LOL. He does look a lot better now.

Poor little Gizmo has taken poorly. He needs a dental urgently. I could not get him in to see a specialist vet until this Wednesday. Unfortunately he also has suffered a very bad chest infection and had to see another vet for that as he became very ill to the point that I thought I was going to lose him. I have been giving him his meds, feeding two or three times a day depending on how hungry he got. He also has had fluids and a nice warm heat pad to keep him warm. He has improved a little but the next vet visit will be the tough one as he will need to be sedated to have his teeth done. So scared in case I lose him too. Fingers crossed though he makes it to his 10th Birthday.

Today I got Pandora's hospital cage back and there laid her favourite Rabbit looking so lonely without her. So tonight I am taking him to bed with me and saying my final Goodbye to my beautiful Pandora then gently cry myself to sleep holding her favourite friend in my arms.
Good bye My sweet Pandora. I will look after Rabbit and keep him safe like I did you.#########X. FOREVER.

After the sad loss of Pandora it seems Gizmo is now unwell and the signs of old age are taking it's toll on him. Although like Pandora he keeps fighting and I am fighting with him. He is still eating a little on his own but I top him up with CC Balls and Emeraid Intensive Care. He is in need of a dental but unsure if he is strong enough to have it done yet as he will need to be sedated for a full teeth check. I will be ringing the vets tomorrow and book him in as soon as posible. Keep going my little man its your 10th Birthday in November and I celebrate with you in style.

My Dear Sweet Pandora the explorer has gone to explorer a her new Rainbow Bridge home where she can run free with all her friends. A BigThank you to Janine Butler who helped her in the begining, in the middle and at the end of her happy carefree life. I will miss her with all my heart and the kisses that we shared. I was honoured to be part of her life and share such magical moments I will treasure forever.

Pandora enjoying her first proper bath since becoming poorly.

Finally Pandora is well enough to have a wonder in the garden. She still has her head tilt but is 100% better than she was before. She is in no pain and happy to have a run in the fresh air.

Pandora took finger food to.a new level.

So last night Quinn slept in the carry cage all nice and snug. Her paw is a little better today and she has been eating and finally had a drink. I built up the small play pen so she could have a little run in a wheel and a play with some toys. She was not too happy about going back in the carrier after an hours play but she started limping again so I thought it best. Flynn is in the big cage on her own and seems quite happy to be alone even though I do sit and chat to her during the day. I am unsure if I will put Quinn back in with her. I'm hoping she hoping the hormones settle down again soon as I cant keep Quinn in the carrier for to long and may have to.try and settle her with Pandoras gang. Sadly the lack of Rosewood foods and treats are possibly make matters worse. Hopefully my pay will come early and I can get them a few Christms presents after Christmas and do what I can till then.

The four girls have got their new mansion in place now and have had a change around to accommodate it. I have feared for a few days that Pandora is being intimidated by Evie. She is not fighting with her just following her around the cage all the time sniffing at her butt. I think Pandora's sight in the good eye is slowly getting worse and she seems a little stressed at times. I am hoping that the chasing will now stop the cage has been changed but if not it may come to the fact that one of them will have to leave the group which I am hoping will not be the case. She is at this present moment having a wander around, climbing, in the wheel, sniff of food. I dont know if its because the others are younger and more active and that is why she seems so old and looks worn out one minute then full of life the next. For awhile anyway. The Video is of her trying out her new home. Not sure if she is impressed or not.

Oakley had been a pain in the bum today. I'm trying to clean his cage and he just takes all the dirty bedding I've put together back where he wants it. He also decided he didnt want his toys on the top shelf and kept bringing them back down. Squeak is his own degu.and does what he wants to do and is settled really well with the others. Sadly poor Gizmo is not looking to well although I think it is mostly age related. He is complete blind now and gets in a panick when you pick him up but calms down when you wisper to him. His eyes are almost always runny which I think is down to root growth but bathing them doesnt seem to help. He has had cream from the vets but it doesnt heal for long. He still eats and drinks well but does sleep a lot more than he use too. I also think he is getting hard of hearing as when I shout him he doesn't always responed and scares me when he doesnt move . Every time he scares me it costs him a kiss but he doesn't care about that either. Keep fighting my little man.

I have been running a Leicester based rescue for degus almost a decade now, with a little help from friends but mostly from my own pocket. These sweet, social, intelligent little animals are greatly misunderstood, and so many are discarded. Others live horrible lives. Some make it to my rescue and get another chance. Here they are loved. Cared for. Nurtured. But providing homes and care for so many little ones has depleted my resources. From my own pocket I have fed, housed, cared for and provided medical care for over 400 of these little ones, not including babies, but now I get so many that the cost is beyond my modest means. I am only one person. My objective has always been to re-home these lost little ones. Find new forever homes where they will be loved and cared for. Until they are re-homed, however, they remain in my care. They trust me and I won’t let them down. Small donations add up. And what can they do? So much! Cages. Food. Vet visits for the sick. Medicine. Treats and toys to make their lives happy. Under my care they are like family. They ARE family. When they near the end of life, I hold and cuddle them, talk softly to them, warm and cuddle them until they peacefully pass. You can’t imagine how awful I feel when one needs medical care and the funds just aren’t there. Or if I have to make the awful choice of helping one and denying another. The elderly ones retire here, knowing human kindness in their final years. That is why I have set up a gofundme, (see the “Donate” button on the home screen) so I can keep doing this, keep pursuing this passion and love I have caring for these sweet little animals. To show them the good side of humanity. I do all I can, everything I can: build cages, travels hundreds of miles to re-home them, educate folks who need to know more, clean their wounds, administer their med’s, build them toys, and even harvest fresh food and make treats for them. I have a web site but even that now suffers from lack of funds. Now, the cages have worn. The vet bills have depleted my own personal resources, and the nightmarish prospect of perhaps having to close my rescue and cease helping these precious animals looms closer. There are rescues for many species of pet out there, but degus are not as well-known. They are in comparison, new in the pet world. My little rescue has been an oasis for those unfortunates who have been abandoned and will be abandoned. It breaks my heart to think that I’d ever have to turn one away. Can you help, even in a small way? Even a small donation will help buy food and medicine. The picture you see here is of a little family – a mother and her babies. They depend on her, and she depends on me now to help care for her little ones. Is there a new forever home in their future?
