Did you know January is ?

It is also the perfect month to start walking your dog and enjoying the many benefits that come with it. Walking is not only good for you, but it's also a great way to improve your dog's physical and mental health.

Here are some of our top tips:

🦮 Regular walks offer an excellent way for you and your dog to stay healthy. Walking can help regulate digestion, maintain healthy joints, improve sleep, and promote a healthy weight.

🦮 Walking your dog provides your pet with the mental stimulation they need. The excitement of exploring new sights, meeting other dogs, and smelling the world around them is sure to make your dog happy.

🦮 Creating a routine of regular walks with your dog can help foster a sense of trust and comfort. They will appreciate your daily walks, which can help reduce their stress levels.

🦮 Dogs may exhibit destructive behaviour when they have pent-up energy. Regular walks help curb this by providing exercise and an outlet for excess energy.

🦮 Walking your dog is an excellent opportunity to socialise your pet in a safe and controlled environment. A leashed introduction can help your dog develop social skills while also making new friends along the way.

With the many benefits of daily walks, we encourage you to grab your walking shoes, your dog's lead, and poo bags and head out for a walk.

PRESENTS UNDER THE TREE 🎁

Although it's tradition to place Christmas gifts under the tree, this can make them more accessible to curious canines searching for something to chew or eat, so when placing presents under the tree, it's important to keep your pets in mind and to consider... what is it wrapped with, and what's in it?

Like tinsel, if ribbon is ingested, it can cause a life-threatening intestinal blockage. And if what is inside the package is deliciously tempting, it is best to err on the side of caution and keep it out of the reach of pets.

ENJOYING A FESTIVE TIPPLE? 🍹🍷🥂

If you're getting into the Christmas spirit, keep in mind that alcohol can be dangerous for pets.

Be wary of leaving drinks where pets can easily access them, and be aware of the signs of ethanol intoxication, which include:

⚠️Vomiting
⚠️Depression
⚠️ Lack of coordination
⚠️ Disorientation
⚠️ Drowsiness

If you notice your pet has these conditions, please contact us immediately.

CHOCOLATE TREATS 🍫

From Advent calendars to chocolate coins hanging on the tree and boxes of shiny chocolates wrapped up, dogs have many opportunities to sniff the sweet treats out.

Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine, a bit like caffeine, which, while tasty, is severely poisonous to cats and dogs. The darker the chocolate, the worse it is.

Some of the signs of chocolate poisoning include vomiting and diarrhoea, muscle tremors, seizures and an irregular heartbeat. If you think your pet may have ingested chocolate and is vomiting or displaying any of the following symptoms, please get in touch with us immediately.

As we get closer to the festive season, it is important to remember that some of our favourite holiday treats can be dangerous to our pets. Mince pies and Christmas cakes contain ingredients that could be toxic to dogs, including:

⚠️ Currants
⚠️ Raisins and sultanas
⚠️ Alcohol

Please ensure that delicious treats are kept out of reach and avoid sharing or giving them to your pets.

🕯️ Hazard: Candles

Who doesn't love the warm glow of a scented Christmas candle? Not only do candles bring a cosy vibe to any room, but they also help set the festive mood. However, candles can be hazardous if you have a curious cat or a fearless dog at home.

To avoid the risk of accidents, injuries, and choking, keep candles at a safe distance from your pets and ensure that lit candles are supervised at all times.

DECK THE HALLS… 🎄🏘️

As we begin decking our halls and adorning our humble abodes with all things festive, it's important to remember the potential hazards to our cats and dogs. 🐶😺

As we sit around the Christmas tree, admiring the beautiful decorations, please be aware that glass baubles, edible decorations, tinsel, and fairy lights can prove problematic if played with, eaten, or smashed.

While your Christmas tree and decorations are up in the house, keep a close eye on your pet to ensure they are not chewing or swallowing any of these enticing objects.

🐱 Also, it's important to remember that pets, especially curious cats, can often climb into the tree and get tangled up in these decorations.

BEWARE OF PESKY PINE NEEDLES 🎄

Whether they are real or not, while pine needles are not toxic to dogs, they can cause serious intestinal blockages and throat irritation and get stuck in your pet's paws.

If you're opting for a real Christmas tree this year, consider a variety with a low needle drop to reduce the risk of a poorly pet.

If you think your pet may have been playing with pine needles or is vomiting pine needles, please get in contact with us immediately.

Shopping for pet insurance can be daunting, with many factors to consider. Unlike home or car insurance, pet insurance requires you to consider your pet's entire life, not just a year. Keep in mind that not all pet insurance plans are the same.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting one:

✔️ What is the quality of the cover?
✔️ What are the excesses, and will they increase?
✔️ Does it cover any pre-existing conditions your pet has?
✔️ Is the price fair, and how will this change over your pet's lifetime?
✔️ Is there additional cover for anything else your pet might need?

This week is World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), a global campaign that is celebrated annually to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance and the dangers it poses to both human and animal health.

It's critical that we preserve the effectiveness of our antibiotics for as long as possible, which can be achieved by only using them when necessary. The battle against antibiotic resistance is a collective effort, and we all have a role to play.

We’re going blue to raise awareness. Are you ready to do your part?

Are you and your pet prepared for bonfire night? 🎆🎇🧨

Loud bangs, pops and bright flashing lights can be very stressful for pets and their owners, so we wanted to share a few measures you can put in place to help your pet, including a great pet playlist, which you can play to help distract your pet from the frightful fireworks.

While fireworks light up the skies, we advise you to:
🏠 Stay at home with your pet
💧 Ensure they have access to fresh water
🚪 Close curtains, blinds, windows and keep doors closed
🎪 Provide a safe space with bedding for your pet to snuggle in, and consider bringing small animals inside.

There are lots of benefits to having your pet insured, such as:

✔️ Peace of mind

✔️ Prompt treatment

✔️ Claims could be paid directly to your vet

✔️ Other unexpected costs could be covered

✔️ Decisions are not based on finances.

Of course, we hope you'll never need to use it, but it's worth knowing the benefits.

KEEP YOUR PET SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN 👻🎃👹

Halloween can be a ‘spooktacular’ time of year for many, but it can be a stressful experience for pets. Here are some helpful tips to keep your pets safe and happy during the Halloween season:

🐶 Spend time reassuring your pets if you plan to dress up for Halloween. Masks and makeup may be enjoyable for you, but your pets may find them scary if they don't recognise you.

🚪 With the constant opening and closing of doors for trick-or-treaters, ensure your pets are kept from potential escape routes. It's also important to have your pets micro-chipped in case the unexpected happens.

🎆 If bright lights or loud noises are anticipated, provide a safe and comfortable space for your pets to retreat to.

🍬 Keep sweet treats out of reach, including chocolate, sweets, and anything containing xylitol.

🎃 Decorations have become a big part of Halloween; however, curious pets can sometimes get into trouble with them. To ensure your pets stay safe, keep open flames, small decorative lights, and decorations out of their reach.

We hope you have a safe and 'fang-tactic' Halloween, but should you need us, we will be here for you and your pet.

GETTING YOUR PET READY FOR DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME CHANGES!

We're all looking forward to that extra hour of sleep when the clocks go back on Saturday 29 October, and lighter morning, but have you considered the impact on your pets? 💤🌞🌔

🕰️When the time changes, it can cause psychological and physiological stress for your pet due to changing their routine.

We suggest gradually changing their schedule in the days leading up to the clock change to make the transition easier.

🦮🦴Start a week before and adjust their feeding, walking, and waking times by ten minutes each day. While changing, it's not uncommon for pets to have accidents indoors, but it's important to remain patient with them as they don't understand the reason for the time change. To ease your pet into the new schedule, delay their routine by an hour over several days.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

STRAY LIGHT SAVING

😺 Ensuring that your cat is microchipped will be a legal requirement from Monday 10 June 2024, is your cat microchipped?

As we experience a change in daylight hours in the coming weeks, we are encouraging all cat owners to have their cat microchipped, as well as having a reflective collar and serving their dinner a little earlier, encouraging them inside.

The loud bangs and flashing lights of fireworks can be distressing for small animals. As Bonfire Night approaches, ensuring that your pets are well-prepared for the occasion is important. If you own small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs, here are some tips to help them remain calm and happy.

🧶Provide extra bedding if your pet lives outdoors so they can burrow down and feel safe from any bright lights and loud noises. This will give them a comfortable and secure space to hide away from the excitement.

🏡Consider bringing your pet indoors for the night to shield them from the noise and commotion of the evening. Playing some relaxing music can also help to muffle the sound of fireworks and create a calming atmosphere.

🚪If your pet already lives indoors, close curtains and windows to dampen the sound of loud bangs and create a more peaceful environment.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Today is World Mental Health Day, a day to reflect on the significance of prioritising our mental well-being and supporting those around us to do the same.

One way to achieve this is by showing kindness, and there's nothing quite like the love we receive from our pets that can work wonders for our mental health.

With 1 in 4 people experiencing mental health issues each year, caring for a pet can contribute to positive mental health in many ways, including:

💚 Providing companionship, security, and someone to spend time with

💚 Reducing anxiety and increasing self-confidence

💚 Offering unconditional love and being great listeners

💚 Encouraging physical activity through daily walks or runs

💚 Facilitating social interaction with other pet owners

💚 Providing structure to the day with feeding, exercising, and caring for a pet

💚 Elevating serotonin and dopamine levels through play leads to a calming and relaxing effect.

Take some time today to prioritise your mental health by spending time with your pet. Enjoy the time you spend with them, taking your dog for a walk, cuddling with your cat, or giving your pet a stroke.

🍂 🐱 As autumn sets in and the nights grow longer, it's time to prepare for Bonfire Night. However, while fireworks bring us joy, they can be distressing for our feline friends.

As clever creatures, cats require extra care during this time. Here are some tips to help keep your cat safe and comfortable:

🏠 Keep your cat indoors where possible and make sure they are microchipped
🤫Create a cosy and quiet space inside where they can relax and avoid the noise.
🐱Consider giving them calming treats or supplements to help them stay calm. A pheromone diffuser may also be beneficial, particularly to start using ahead of the celebration season.

Have you heard of Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI)? 🐶🌳🍂

This condition is most commonly observed in dogs between August and November after walking in wooded areas.
Although SCI is rare, it's critical to be able to recognise the symptoms, including:

⚠️Vomiting
⚠️Lethargy
⚠️Diarrhea
⚠️Lack of appetite
⚠️Muscle tremors

While there are many other common reasons why these symptoms may occur, we advise contacting us immediately if you suspect your dog is exhibiting signs of SCI, particularly within 72 hours of visiting a wooded area.

If left untreated, seasonal canine illness can be fatal.
