Sourcing horses
Until the 1880s, cavalry regiments were responsible for buying their own horses. In 1887, the Remount Department was created to take over this role. Animals were sourced from breeders, auctions and private families. Officers at this time still supplied their own horses.

When the First World War broke out in 1914, the Army had only 25,000 horses at its disposal. By the end of the conflict, it had purchased over 460,000 horses and mules from across Britain and Ireland, and even more from overseas.

A special commemorative peice made from “Otto’s” shoe.
Hand forged into a heart and mounted on a sanded and treated elm wood panel, finished with a solid brass plaque to pay homage to a much loved horse for his owners to remember him by❤️🐎

I am now taking orders for bespoke commemorative and ornamental pieces, all that is needed to create one like this is a shoe from your horse to be forged into a heart, if you don’t have a shoe don’t worry I can make you a shoe or a heart to remember your beloved horse.

Please send me a message for more details.

Laminitis advice and alert.

Due to the drastic weather change over the last few weeks the nutrition levels of the grass has shot up, even if you have not had much visible growth the sugar levels of new grass shoots will be high and this will be a shock to your horses or ponies digestive system after the dry spell we have had this year. I have seen large increase in mild/ moderate lamintic flare ups also abscesses and serious colic cases, so please be careful and mindful of this when you are planning your turnout routine.

Laminitis is a veterinary emergency so if you suspect anything could be slight shortness in gate, foot shuffling, change in general mood ( other signs are in the photo below ) these could be some early signs of an episode so please seek some advise from your vet, in sudden cases of laminitis seeing how they are in a day or two does not work, it needs to be addressed as early as possible for the best out come.

Take care

Well here it is Merry Christmas!!

All done for another year, and what a mad year it has been! I would like to take a moment to thank and wish all my customers, family and friends a great Christmas 🎄

Thank you for all the lovely presents and gift from my clients ( I feel very spoilt ) and your continued custom and trust in me looking after your furry friends feet 🐎 I know I have had to move and rearrange visit’s but your patience has been much appreciated through a tricky time my wife and I were faced with this year.

Here is a picture of my beautiful wife with our 3 month premature little boy. After 11 weeks in the hospital he is now home with us and gets to spend his first Christmas with Mummy, big brother Jacob and me 💜

Take care everyone

Antony Marris and Family.

My background

I grew up in an equine environment through my mother and uncle having horses, i learnt to ride at a young age with my four siblings but I had always been fascinated by the farrier shoeing , trimming the horses and ponies.

Once I finished school I completed my pre-farrier course at Hereford College of Technology.I then started my apprenticeship with Billy Crothers 2008 whilst going to college at Myerscough School of Farriery and obtaining my Diploma from the worshipful company of farriers in March 2014. Staying on working with Billy for 2 1/2 years then set up my own company before the birth of my son Jacob in 2016. My company is based in Soulbury just outside of Leighton buzzard I am mostly mobile but do have customers come to my forge at home if they are outside my travel radius. All types of shoeing and barefoot trimming is undertaken by myself. I am lucky enough to shoe many high level competition horses, I was awarded best shod horse at the Badminton Horse trials in 2019 on the horse Call Me Maggie May ridden by Izzy Taylor 🇬🇧 I feel very privileged to the first person to also win this award using modern materials, she was shod using 3rd millennium frog pads and anti concussion material underneath which keeps her sound and comfortable throughout the season. This was one of my life goals when growing up.
