PRESENTATION TITLE - Fostering Emotional Resilience in Reactive Equids: Harnessing the Power of Environmental Enrichment
SESSION DESCRIPTION:
In this presentation, I will describe how enriched environments can positively impact the expression of fearful and reactive behaviors in equines.

The management of domestic horses diverges from their natural habitat and behavioral requirements. Confined spaces such as small stalls and regulated feedings limit opportunities for movement and diminish natural foraging behaviors, potentially affecting the well-being of the horses.

Enrichment initiatives aim to promote mental engagement and facilitate activities that align with their species-typical behavior patterns. Evidence suggests that, alongside the rise in natural behaviors observed in horses within enriched environments, there can also be reduced intensity and frequency of undesirable behavior patterns such as fearfulness and reactivity.

PRESENTATION TITLE- Feeding Cats: How Food Can Impact Behavioral Health
SESSION DESCRIPTION:
Many cat behavior cases can be mitigated by a species-appropriate feeding routine, highly digestible and bioavailable food for felines and a corrected caloric intake.

We will discuss how following incorrect feeding guidelines and advice can create a living situation where your cat does not consider treats as a reward. Treats are a necessity to meet their daily caloric needs.

Almost 40% of my cat behavior cases have a significant nutritional component. Cat owners tend to prioritize the importance of what they feed their cats over how often and how much food they feed.

From food aggression to feeding routine, nutrition and behavior are closely intertwined.

PRESENTATION TITLE- Pet Bereavement: Précis of a Complex Journey
SESSION DESCRIPTION:
As animal trainers with a passion for what we do, we possibly know more than most about the pain of losing an animal family member, whether it be one of our own or one with whom we work. How to companion people through this difficult time is rarely seen in any animal training course. This is an unfortunate oversight.

Grief comes in many forms and so too do grievers. Having a basic understanding of not only the types of grief that people can encounter but the stages of grief through which many pass, will help us support our clients, friends, family and even ourselves through the grieving process.

Children and elders are differently sensitive to grief and need individual attention to their concerns. That does not discount the complexity of adult grief.

Grief counselling is not the job of an animal trainer, but some knowledge of grief and its vagaries may help relieve clients’ anxieties or encourage them to seek further help.

Grief is a very personal journey (despite what some in society believe of it) and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. There is no time limit on grief. There are, however, warning signs of when help is warranted. Many do not understand these principles and suffer further as a consequence.

Reconciling grief and acceptance of life as it is and as it will be is a more recent concept than formally seeking ‘closure’. “Moving from loving in the present to loving in memory” (Wolfet 2019) is a necessary transitional phase.

Simple things such as knowing the various options people have when their pet dies and how they can best celebrate and memorialize the life of a pet will help people understand and move forward with life after losing a special friend. Today there are many therapies to help people in their grief and a knowledge of what is locally available will always be of benefit to the grieving client.

This topic is endless, and this presentation seeks only to whet the trainer’s appetite to know more about how this knowledge can be incorporated into daily practice.

What do you think?

(Thank you for sharing, Christine)

16/07/2024

When we punish dogs for growling, even if they're growling at our child, we aren't helping them feel better about whatever it is that is threatening them. Instead, we are teaching to stop letting us know when they feel unsafe.

The result? A dog who stops giving us warning signs and "bites out of the blue."
And, that's how we create dangerous dogs. I'd much rather have a dog growl and tell me they're upset (so we have a chance to intervene and help them) than a dog who just bites without any warning signs.

09/07/2024

If you're feeding kibble to your pets, be thankful you're not living in the US. When they're not using subpar grain (full of mycotoxins, studies show) and leftovers from the human veg industry (beet pulp, corn gluten, soybean hull), they're using horribly dangerous, condemned, waste meat from the agri sector (we call it 4D meat - dead, diseased, dying, disabled - which is sent for cremation over here). They can also use road kill and used, HIGHLY TOXIC restaurant grease.

Shame on the vet industry over there recommending that horrible filth over real food.

🐕 Oil Seed R**e is NOT highly toxic to dogs. The scent can be overpowering, causing dogs to get lost. Some dogs suffer allergic reactions to the sap, and they'll probably throw up if they eat it. But it isn't deadly. However, please keep your dog on the footpath through r**e (and any other crops) as any damage causes farmers to lose money.
🐕 Ice is NOT deadly. If it's a warm day, your dog might enjoy some ice in their water bowl or a frozen treat. Freezing food stuffed toys makes them last longer. Raggies soaked in chicken broth and frozen are great for teething. But if your dog is suffering heat exhaustion, avoid ice. The shock of icy water on the stomach could cause vomiting and further dehydration.
🐕 Adders are rarely deadly, but their bites cause very unpleasant and painful wounds. If you suspect an adder bite.call your vet and get there as soon as possible. Carry or stretcher your dog if possible. Cool water might soothe the pain a little, but don't delay getting to the vet. Antivenom is not essential, but your vet will know where the nearest supply is if necessary. Adder bells probably don't work, walking with a stick (which vibrates the ground), and keeping your dog on the path is safest.
🐕Most garden bulbs are NOT deadly. A nibble of a daffodil or bluebell leaf may cause stomach irritation, that's all. Eating a large amount of bulbs could be dangerous. Some garden plants, including Foxglove, Lily of the Valley, and Oleander, are toxic in small quantities and should be avoided.
🐕 Ticks must only be removed with a suitable tick hook or similar tool. They must never be smothered in liquid soap, doused in alcohol, burnt, or squashed. If the tick is disturbed it is more likely to infect your pet (or you!) if it is carrying disease.

Today's fun: Discovering I have published a new book *without even knowing it!* That's how talented I am.

The truth is much scarier.

AI has been used to generate an entire book published in my name. A kind fan let me know she had bought it, not realizing it was NOT from me, and was shocked at the cheap printing, awful writing and so many other ways that it was clear I had nothing to do with this.

The title is The Best Way to Meet Your Dog: Navigating Canine Behavior and Relationships. IT IS NOT MINE.

It has stolen a lot of material from a lot of trainers including me, Kim Brophey and others. I have filed complaints with Amazon.

This is going to be the future, I fear. Stay alert, and keep an eye out for what's posted on Amazon under your own name.

If you can *without purchasing the book,* post a warning at Amazon in the reviews for this crap.

THEORY THURSDAY - canine olfaction
The Pulse Study "At the heart of the walk" from several years ago showed us that dogs sniff more on a long lead compared to a short lead.
https://www.dogfieldstudy.com/en/study/pulse-study-at-the-heart-of-the-walk

And sniffing is, of course, so important to dogs. As this article outlines, processing odour actually helps them process what they see, something that has so far been only found in dogs.
https://www.sciencenews.org/article/dog-smell-new-nose-brain-connection

So many reasons to let them sniff :)

8 years they've been saying this. Immunology 101. Studies show vaccines for viruses don't wear off quick....at all (challenge studies core vaccines last for 7-9yrs). It was only ever a ruse of Big Pharma to get the vets to give them yearly. They simply wrote "studies show good for a year" on the back. And that was true, sort of. They simply tested them after a year! And with no adults apparently asking to see the supporting data, that was good enough to make these chemicals part of their annual health check. Now, if you want to keep that insurance or put them in kennels etc, buddy, you better play ball. Sure, where's the harm?!!!
SIDE EFFECTS
Pet vaccines linked to hypothyroidism

Pet vaccines also linked to behaivoural changes, increased susceptibility to infections, cancer, neurologic disorders and encephalitis, jaundice, organ failure and collapse with auto-agglutinated red blood cells.

TIMELINE
Moore et al. (2005) found that reactions can occur within three days of dog’s injections. These range from the more violent (but thankfully rare) anaphylactic reactions and seizures to the more common welts (inflammation) at the injection points.
http://avmajournals.avma.org/doi/abs/10.2460/javma.2005.227.1102

Vaccinosis on the other hand (disease resulting from vaccinations) is more chronic, taking time to develop. Delayed-type immunologic response takes 10–28 days to set in. The onset of any autoimmune disease is expected to occur 30 to 45 days post-vaccination. But who's looking then?!
https://europepmc.org/article/med/9890056

Vets are proving extremely reluctant to link vaccines to illness. This post was inspired by a client yesterday. 3 days after the jab the dog comes down with an autoimmune condition called immune-mediated hemolytic anemia which studies show is one of the more common side effects. Good luck if your dog gets ill 30-45 days later.

Still today the ONLY large survey of pet owners post vaccination reveals a significant percentage (42%, this figure rose to 49% with extra data) of canine diseases arise in the first three months following vaccination. This is over five times the expected percentage.

"In respect of the illnesses occurring seven days after vaccination, the case against vaccination is even more dramatic. The first interim survey results showed that 25% of illness occurred within seven days, when statistically it should only be 1.92%. This rose to 29% when more dogs were added to the survey. That is to say, the risk of illness is 12.8 times greater than would be expected if vaccines had nothing to do with the illness."

MOST AFFECTED
Small dogs and toys are the most prone, to side effects as still, incredibly, the same COMPLETELY SAFE dose is given to a Chihuahua as a Great Dane, an animal 60 times larger than it. Honestly.

Also white breeds (as we see with food sensitivity) or with coat colour dilution such as blue and fawn Doberman pinschers, the merle collie, Australian shepherd, Shetland sheepdog, and harlequin Great Danes. These breeds are more susceptible to high fevers, post-vaccinal seizures, high fevers, and painful episodes of hypertrophic osteodystrophy or HOD

BEST ADVICE
Here's what the people in the know say to do - don't start too young (as material antibodies are present). This way you only have to use a single shot of DHP (the 3 core vaccines in Ireland/UK, may be different where you are...) then titre a few weeks later to see if it took.
https://dogsfirst.ie/health-issues/dog-vaccinations-part-3-puppy-vaccinations-best-practice/

Blood titres thereafter are best. Ring around vet clinics in your area. Ask if they stock blood titre tests for canine vaccinations (Vaccicheck is a common brand). Somone will. Make sure to compare prices as, while it should be cheap, the prices are still pretty high in some places.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY BLOOD TITRE REVEALS "LOW" ANTIBODIES AND THE VET WANTS TO "TOP THEM UP"...
Taken from the WSAVA guidelines “...the presence of antibody (no matter what the titre) indicates protective immunity and immunological memory is present in that animal. Giving more frequent vaccines to animals in an attempt to increase antibody titre is a pointless exercise. It is impossible to create ‘greater immunity’ by attempting to increase an antibody titre.”
TOP TIP:
MOST IMPORTANT, INSIST YOUR BREEDER DOES NOT PUT A VACCINE INTO AN 8WK OLD PUP. THERE IS SO FAR NO BENEFIT, ONLY POTENTIAL FOR HARM. MATERNAL ANTIBODIES ENSURE IT'S NOT NECESSARY AND YOUR LOCAL VET WILL NOT CONSIDER IT IN THEIR MULTI-VAX SCHEDULE.

***

Vaccines are of course, important but perhaps the current vaccine load is not.

As this mentions vaccines and side effects together, Facebook will kill the reach of it and likely kill the reach of my account for a bit. You're not allowed talk about side effects as that might mean people will become aware and want to learn more about....well, vaccine side effects. And we can't have that.

So if you find this post, please share.

Let's talk about window barking and how to manage it!

Living on a busy street in Montreal, we are faced with the constant sight of dogs, people, deliveries.. you name it!

Any of which may cause my dog to react; sometimes multiple times per day or hour!

Window film has been a life saver for us, not only does it make cute rainbows on the floor 🌈 and allows the light it but it has stopped the barking!

Part of dog training is management and setting your dog up for success.

Looking out the window is not always enjoyable when faced with dogs or people they'd like to greet but don't have access to. As humans we can rationalize this but for dogs this barrier of seeing their friends having fun outside without the possibility of joining can be frustrating and stressful.

Window film can also be helpful for dogs who may find these triggers scary!

While window film is not the only thing you can do, it is a personal favorite of mine.

Other things include:

•limiting access to the window at rush hour

• keeping your dog busy while in that area

•teaching them to touch or recall away from the window

When you hear a dog growl, don't correct the dog - but do take action STAT. Stop. Thank. Assess. Take steps to make the dog more comfortable.

A growl is a warning that things *could* get worse if the current path continues. Heed that warning and be glad you got it!
