🐾 Enrichment Idea! 🐾

Keeping your pet's mind healthy is just as important as looking after their physical health. Bored pets can become destructive and exhibit negative behaviours.

Having enrichment ideas ready to go for when the weather is hot is also a great way to tire them out when you can't go out for walks ☀

💡Enrichment isn't always about food! Scenting, training and even play are all classed as Enrichment as they get your pet's brain working. You don't need to spend lots to enrich your pet's lives, though there are a great range of puzzle toys available now!

🐶Dogs: Feed their dinner differently! Use a snuffle mat, a rolled up towel, or treat dispenser to put their kibble in.

🐾Or, why not hide their favourite treat somewhere in the house! Rub the treat onto various surfaces leading up to the hiding spot for your dog to sniff out.
Dogs Trust has some great Enrichment ideas: https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/life-with-your-dog/enrichment/enrichment-activities-for-dogs

🐱Cats: Everyone knows Cats love Catnip! Rub a little catnip in spots around the house for your cat to seek out.
Or, why not try making your own cat toys! Battersea has some great ideas:
https://www.battersea.org.uk/pet-advice/cat-advice/diy-cat-toys?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1K6Ig8jghwMV1ZFQBh2Rfj0IEAAYAiAAEgLQh_D_BwE

🐹Small Pets: Scatter food around the enclosure to mimic their natural foraging behaviour. Or, why not try stuffing their hay into cardboard tubes? They can shred the cardboard after the hay is gone for double the fun!

❗Please remember to always check any toy or activity for damage and suitability for use, and keep an eye on pets who like to chew or swallow things they shouldn't! ❗

Featured is Jake, Receptionist Angela's Border Collie! He has a treat ball filled with mostly his tea and a few treats to keep him motivated, and is demonstrating his brain power brilliantly ❤

Very sadly we have had a deceased entire male cat brought into our Ludlow Surgery this afternoon. He was found near the Salwey Arms at Wooferton. He is cream and brown, possibly pedigree, not microchipped.

🐶🐾Baz checking out our lab facilities with Student Veterinary Nurse Daisy!

With our in-house lab we are able to provide same day results for a wide variety of tests, whether it's a poorly patient's bloods, a sample taken from a lump, urine testing, or a pre-breeding fertility test!

They provide our Vets with valuable information about what's going on and help us to make decisions on a treatment plan, and having these facilities in-house saves valuable time in diagnosing and identifying problems early.

Some of you may have seen Baz around as he belongs to our Receptionist Emillie! 😊 His tail never stops wagging 💕

🦊 The Fox with Fly-strike 🦊

🐾Yesterday our Leominster team treated a more unusual patient; an adult male Red Fox was brought in by a member of the public after being found in distress on the road.

🦊Vet Janine and Head Vet Nurse Shaz managed to get him safely inside, without being injured themselves, and set about assessing his condition. He was placed into a dark space in one of our walk-in kennels to keep him calm and assess his mobility. He seemed very comfortable with his new bed!

🐾He could walk, albeit with a few wobbles, but there was obvious evidence of fly-strike- where flies lay eggs on the soft tissues around the back end resulting in maggots eating away at the animal once hatched.

🐑🐰Sheep and Rabbits are particularly prone to fly-strike in the warmer months, and if owners are not vigilant they can cause real problems for the affected animal.

🦊Once he had settled, they set about sedating him to begin treatment and give him a full assessment. He seemed in good condition and there were no obvious wounds, so the clipping began to remove the maggots and any unhatched fly eggs. He was given some oxygen, a dose of pain relief, and Shaz monitored his breathing and heart-rate whilst assisting Janine with his clip-job!

🐾They made great progress, and despite the severity of his fly-strike we were hopeful he would be able to be rehabilitated and released. However, as they clipped away they found bruising around his pelvis. Suspicious that there was something more serious going on, they transferred him to the x-ray room to do some imaging.

🤕Sadly, this is where the extent of his injuries and cause of the fly-strike became obvious. X-Rays revealed a badly broken pelvis, most likely caused by a run-in with a car. The decision was made to put him to sleep, as his injuries would mean a long intensive recovery and a lifetime in captivity. For a wild animal in his prime this is an unfair sentence and the kindest thing was to let him sleep.

We would like to thank Vale Wildlife Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre for their advice and assistance, and offer of taking him in if suitable. We wish he had a happier outcome 💔

⚠We will always see any wildlife brought to us without charge, but would like to urge people to please take caution! We are very lucky in this country that our largest predators are still quite small, but they can still cause some serious damage and also carry high infection risks. Animals in pain and shock can behave very erratically, and they are still wild animals who are not used to humans.

Please do not put yourselves in harms way to rescue an animal. If in any doubt, please call the RSPCA, or a wildlife rescue such as Vale or Cuan Wildlife Rescue for advice and assistance.

Heatstroke is an Emergency.
Never leave pets in a car or hot room such as a conservatory. Be particularly careful of the brachy-breeds such as Pugs & Bulldogs in warm weather.

If you suspect your pet has heatstroke do not delay in starting treatment and contacting your vets.
🚨 Please still remember to call ahead so the team can prepare for your arrival and triage the patient 🚨

So, what are the signs?

❗ Rapid panting & Fast breathing
❗ Lethargy, low energy
❗ Weakness
❗ Bright red, or very pale, gums
❗ Vomiting and/or Diarrhoea

Severe signs;
❗ Collapse
❗ Unconsciousness
❗ Confusion
❗ Seizures

What can you do to help your pet?
💚 Lie the pet on some wet towels
💚 Pour water over them with tepid or cool water (do not use freezing water as this can cause them to go into shock) - start slowly to avoid startling them and avoid getting water in their nose.
💚 Place them in a breeze - open windows/doors or turn on the air-conditioning if in the car
💚 Keep them in the shade or a cool area
💚 Encourage them to have a drink of cool water - but do not force them

🌞😎 It's finally summer! 😎🌞
We'd love to see your pets enjoying the sun (safely!) - share your favourite photos in the comments!

However short-lived the summer may be (we hope not!), it still poses a risk to pets of all sizes!
Our top tips for keeping them cool whilst enjoying the summer:

🔥 Avoid the hottest part of the day - try some indoor games to keep their minds busy!
🔥 Always have fresh, clean water available.
🔥 Keep hutches and runs for small furries in the shade.
🔥 Closely monitor temperatures inside hutches and consider bringing pets inside.
🔥 Freeze a hot-water bottle and wrap it in a towel for pets to cool off with.
🔥 Brush out any shedding undercoat
🔥 Don't allow pets to lie out in the sun for extended periods - however much they enjoy it!
🔥 Make some pet-friendly ice lollies! Why not try filling a mould with a pet-friendly broth or water and add their favourite treats to work towards. Watermelon and apple make great crunchy inclusions for dogs!

Heatstroke is an emergency - if you suspect your pet has heatstroke do not delay in seeking treatment.
Our next post will highlight the signs to look out for.

☀️☀️☀️

Remember to plan for your pets now summer is here🐶

🐾Early morning and later evening walks
🐾Take care on pavements - test by holding the back of your hand onto the ground for 5-10 seconds. If it is too hot for you to keep your hand there it’s too hot for their paws!
🐾Keep hydrated! Bringing frozen treats and toys into play time is a great way to do this and can make a safe alternative to a walk for mental stimulation
🐾Watch for signs of heat stroke and if in any doubt contact your vet immediately
🐾NEVER leave dogs in cars even on what may seem like a just a warm day!
