Following a recent tragic case where sadly a beautiful young spaniel, Barney, lost his life; this post is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of common household plants.

These are plants that many of us may have in our homes without realising the dangers that they pose to our pets.
This recent case involved the ingestion of an elephant ear plant, there are several varieties of these, all of which are toxic. Common varieties are Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma.

The elephant ear plant is a houseplant with giant pointed leaves that look like elephant ears. This plant may be nice to look at, but it can be dangerous for your pet.

These plants contain an insoluble calcium oxalate acid. The calcium oxalate has crystals that leech into the tissues of your pet’s skin and mouth which causes injury to your pet’s mouth. The immediate signs of alocasia poisoning are pawing at the face and mouth, vomiting, foaming, and drooling. The swelling of the mouth, tongue, and upper airway can produce breathing trouble and difficulty in swallowing. This can be fatal for your pet quickly if you do not get immediate medical help. Your pet can also get a toxic reaction of the skin and eyes from the liquid or oils inside the leaves and stalk, and puncture wounds from the thorns. This can cause skin pain, redness and itching.

If your pet has ingested a toxic plant you should carefully rinse your pet’s mouth out with cold water on a washcloth. Clean any plant residue from your pet’s face and rinse out its eyes if they will tolerate this. Seek veterinary advice immediately.

We would urge you to check what plants you have and whether these are safe to pets.

🔔It's that time of year again! 🔔
The Christmas treats are in the house and naughty pets just can't resist sneaking a mouthful...

We've had a few dogs in recently who have needed to be made sick after indulging in what's not for them 🫣

🎄Christmas cake, mince pies and chocolates from the advent calendar are all tempting treats that have meant a vet visit has been required. These can all cause significant illness and damage to vital organs if not dealt with.

⏳ If you suspect your pet has eaten a toxin please call us as soon as possible - time is an important factor. ⚠

🎁 It was double festivities yesterday! 🎁
As well as our Christmas Jumper Day we had a mug painting social in the evening!

We brought snacks and goodies (and had a bailey's hot chocolate station! 😋) to munch on before channelling our inner artists for the evening.

We love the variety of designs that came out ❤

🎄 Yesterday we had our Christmas Jumper Day! 🎄
Pictured are just some of the members of staff who took part in this year's event ❤

Everyone who wore a Christmas jumper made a donation which will go towards the purchase of food for a local Food Bank.

We're proud to be able to support such a great cause, even with the odd questionable fashion choice!
