🎃 Halloween Hints 🎃

Halloween is nearly upon us, and whilst it's great fun for us it can be an unsettling time for some of our pets.

Tips to help your pets this Halloween;

👻 Be aware that some pets may find trick-or-treater's unsettling, especially if they're in costume! Consider putting a bowl of sweets out with a note not to knock if your pet may find this worrisome.

👻 Keep chocolates and sweets out of reach! Many sweets may contain the sweetener Xylitol which is poisonous to Dogs.

👻 Pumpkin is great for dogs! A small amount of cooked pumpkin is a great addition to keep your dog included in the celebrations. Just be mindful of too much or you may have an upset tummy!

👻 Beware of decorations! Some of our pets can be a little naughty and take a nibble on things they shouldn't. Keep decorations out of reach and check them for any damage if your pet is a chewer!

❗ If you believe your pet to have ingested anything they shouldn't have please give us a call as soon as possible to have them assessed and treated if needed ❗

🎆🎇 Firework Season is Fast Approaching!!🎇🎆

We know many pet owners worry about how their pets will cope with the upcoming Firework Season. Our friends at the BVRA have put together a brilliant poster for dogs and cats offering tips on how to prepare.

⭐Preparing early gives the best opportunity for success! ⭐

🐰Don't forget about the small furries too! Rabbits and Guinea Pigs can be just as frightened as our dogs and cats. A lot of the tips are applicable to our smaller friends, but the most important ones to remember:

✨Bring them inside - remember to acclimatise them to their new surroundings ahead of time if they have never lived inside. Bring them in for regular periods ahead of any firework nights.

✨Protect them from the sounds as much as possible - cover their cages with a blanket to muffle the noise, and leave a radio or TV on in their area.

✨Don't separate cage-mates, or put together animals who have never lived together. This can increase stress!

✨Give them their favourite treats to nibble on as a distraction!

🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

If you are concerned about how your pets will handle Firework season and would like to discuss their suitability for any medications please give us a call on 01568 612266 (Leominster), or 01584 877877 (Ludlow) to arrange a consultation with a Vet.

⭐🎊 30 Amazing Years! 🎊⭐

Today we celebrated Head Nurse Shaz's 30th Year here at Marches Vets!

Many of you will know Shaz from nurse consultations and caring for your pets over her career. Whether it's a tricky cat for a nail clip, a home visit farewell, or overseeing your patient's anaesthetic during procedures. Shaz has done it all since she started with us, from farm, equine and small animal even rescuing the occasional wild bird!

We hope you'll all join us in wishing her a very happy celebration, and here's to the next milestone! We couldn't do it without you ❤

Thank you as well to our Admin Nikki for the amazing cake! 😋

⭐ Monty's Massive Mass! ⭐

❗ Images of surgical tissue and blood ❗

Monty recently came into our Leominster clinic to be examined by Vet Janine as a large mass had grown rapidly over his side, and was causing his owners some concern. As it was affecting his mobility the decision was taken to remove the mass surgically.

💉Due to Monty's more mature age it was recommended that pre-operative bloods were run to check that it was safe to proceed with a general anaesthetic.
As we can run these in-house we have results back before the vet proceeds with the operation, meaning we can tailor the patient's treatment accordingly! Pre-operative bloods aren't exclusive to the older patient, younger animals can benefit from these too.

🐶Monty's bloods were great, so he was taken into theatre and placed under anaesthetic. His operation site was clipped (we always try and do a neat clip!), and sterilised ready for the surgery to begin. His anaesthetic was closely monitored throughout by Kim, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses, whilst Janine got to work removing the problematic mass. Our RVNs are invaluable, and patient monitoring during procedures is just one of their many skills!

❤Once the mass had been removed a suction drain was placed to remove any build up of fluid - this is the plastic tubing stitched into Monty's side. You can see the fluid being pulled through the drain!
Janine then stitched his wound together working through the layers of tissue that had been cut ending in a neat curving external suture line!

👌 We hope you'd agree her stitch up work was impeccably neat, and the mass was ENORMOUS! Weighing a whopping 1.9kg it's no wonder Monty was starting to find it affecting his movement!

🥰 Monty was fitted with a bandage and bodysuit to keep the drain out of his way, and his bodysuit modified for his owners to easily remove and empty the drain when needed.

👑 Patient Care Assistant Stacey even went the extra mile in his kennel with multiple blankets and a vet bed pillow! Our patients are treated like royalty when they stay with us!

Monty has had several post operative checks since his procedure and we're pleased to report he's doing brilliantly and still smiling in Reception!

⭐ He survived!! ⭐

Yesterday our Lead Vet Johno made it back to do the aerial acrobatic portion of his Wing-Walk!

This is a short clip of the full 10 minutes he was being flung around - rather him than us!
There's still time to donate at the JustGiving page - find the link in the comments!
