🌟 Meet the new member of our team 🌟

We're really excited to announce that Kaz will be joining us in September 😀

Kaz has seen practice with us quite a bit over the last 2 years so lots of you will recognise her smiley face!

Here's what Kaz says about herself:
"Hello I'm Kaz, I'm super excited to be joining the team this year as a freshly graduated vet from the University of Surrey 👩🏼‍🎓

Being local from Malvern, you may have seen me out and about with the team while I've been studying. My biggest interests lie in canine and equine reproduction and internal medicine, therefore it's no surprise that my side hobby is breeding sport ponies! 🐴

I'm really looking forward to start in September and cannot wait to meet you all and your pets 👋🏼

We can’t wait for Kaz to join the Mortimer Vets team 💚

🧡 Rudi 🧡

Gorgeous Rudi came in last week for a dental scale and polish 🦷

Whilst he was under general anaesthetic, vet Lucy could take a closer look at his teeth, and she noticed he also needed a couple of teeth removing 🩺

Take a look at the before and after photos once they were all cleaned up 🤩

Rudi recovered well from the anaesthetic, and is now feeling much more comfortable when eating 🙌🏼

Meet Tiggy - AKA The walking teddy bear 🤭🧸

Naughty Tiggy decided to tuck into what seemed a very tasty and appetising dog bed at the beginning of last week…

Praying she only ate a small amount, and hoping it would pass through, her owners began to get worried when Tiggy started vomiting 😖

X-rays confirmed that she was indeed full of stuffing! Surgery was needed to remove it all before Tiggy felt even more unwell 🩺

Vet Lucy, along with the careful monitoring from nurse Fern successfully removed lots of cushion stuffing from Tiggy’s stomach 👩🏼‍⚕️

Tiggy has bounced back to her usual self (hopefully no more dog beds will be harmed) and is living her day to day life as if nothing has happened 🐶💚

🌍 Take a look at what Nurse Fern has recently been up to 🌍

Fern has just returned from her trip to South Africa where she worked with African wildlife species treating and relocating animals such as Lions, Wildebeest, Zebra, Giraffe and many types of Antelope such as Sable and Springbok 🇿🇦

Fern has learnt some new skills which she has already put to practice with a pigeon that required a wing bandage 🐦

Wildlife is a passion of Ferns and we hope to help our native wildlife where possible 💚

Although we do not charge our clients for treatment of wildlife there is a cost to us as a practice - we have a donation jar on reception for any spare change you wish to donate, which will go towards the wildlife we treat, or any donation’s of bird seeds and cat food are always handy 🫶

🐇 Flystrike 🐇

What is flystrike in rabbits❓

Flystrike in rabbits is a devastating condition, which is particularly common during warm weather. It is caused by the ‘Lucilia Sericata’, or the common green bottle fly which is attracted to damp fur soiled with urine or soft faeces 🪰

Each fly can lay up to 200 eggs on the skin, usually at the rear end of an animal, which then hatch into maggots within hours. The maggots grow by feeding on the rabbit's flesh and, collectively, they can get through a large area of skin frighteningly quickly 🪱

What are some of the signs of flystrike❓

When suffering from flystrike, rabbits may initially seem quiet and lethargic and may adopt a hunched posture. They may also refuse food and drink and you may notice a strong smell coming from their hutch.
Another typical sign of rabbit flystrike is digging into corners to try to relieve the pain 🐇

As the maggots grow and eat away more of the skin, severe shock develops, eventually leading to collapse and death. It's important to check your rabbit's fur daily for any signs of maggots and if you find them crawling on your rabbit's fur, you must call us immediately ☎️

Can rabbits recover from flystrike❓

Rabbits with flystrike can, and do recover as long as the maggots are removed in the early stages. This is, however, a tricky procedure and should be carried out by your vet 👩🏼‍⚕️

What do I do if I find maggots❓

Flystrike in rabbits is a life-threatening emergency. You should contact us straight away if your rabbit is showing signs of rabbit flystrike or if you find a maggot on your rabbit or in their cage❗️

🌟Wonderful Winnie🌟

*Warning - some graphic photos*

Winnie won our hearts recently after being hospitalised for a few days!

She came in feeling very sorry for herself, not wanting to eat and had bad diarrhoea 🐶

After some investigations, and with sedation on board to help her feel more comfortable Rowena was able to feel something abnormal in her abdomen 🩺

We proceeded to surgery and found that Winnie had an intussusception - this is where a portion of the intestines slips inside itself and then causes a blockage 😣

Sometimes it is possible to gently remove the affected intestine from itself but unfortunately for Winnie the blood supply was severely affected 🩸

Rowena and Abi had to remove this damaged intestine and carefully stitch the ends back together 🪡

Winnie has recovered really well from this fiddly surgery and is now back to her normal bouncy self 😀🙌🏼
