It was a bit of a wet and soggy @chickenstoyourdoor collection day today, but so many beautiful hens went off to their new homes so there were smiles all round. This is August and not November, right?! 🤔
Vorwerks were a very popular choice today and I'm not at all surprised! They are stunning birds 🧡🖤
If you'd like some pretty feathered friends to join your family, our next collection date is the 14th September (and this is the final one for 2023!)
Reserve your hens now to guarantee the breeds you would like.

Once the fields have been cut for hay, the beautiful Kite gets busy hunting. It was such a pleasure to watch it so gracefully and silently flying across the fields this morning.

Sarah bought 6 of our bantam hatching eggs to put under her broody hen. Unfortunately on day 7 the hen decided that being broody wasn't for her anymore, and left the nest. Sarah managed to borrow an incubator to re-set the eggs as quickly as possible and, despite the break in incubation conditions, 5 adorable chicks have hatched!
We still have bantam hatching eggs available, and this week the large fowl olive, blue and dark brown eggs will be going under a fertility test hatch!
We have a hugely exciting announcement to make!!
Just when this year was looking rather bleak, we have been able to team up with the wonderful folk at Chickens To Your Door UK to continue providing beautiful, vaccinated point of lay hens, without using our outdoor pens, and remaining in line with avian flu restrictions.
You can choose us here at Martins Wood Farm as your pick up point, or choose from one of the other collection locations across England.
Be sure to use the drop down box stating how you heard about them- and choose Paula @ Martins Wood Farm!
Next collection date is due for the end of April, so don't miss out and select your birds today- there are 30 stunning breeds to choose from! www.chickenstoyourdoor.co.uk
This little hen laid her egg right in front of me today!
You can see the egg is wet when it's first laid. This is due to the final part of the egg laying process, when a protective cuticle, known as the "bloom", is added to the outside of the porous shell of the egg. This bloom helps to prevent bacteria from entering the egg and causing it to go off. The bloom dries very quickly from the warmth of the freshly laid egg. Over time the bloom will naturally breakdown, but the presence of it allows the eggs to remain fresh for up to four weeks when stored at room temperature.
It is always best to avoid washing eggs, as this removes the bloom and makes the egg more susceptible to bacteria entering the shell. If an egg is heavily soiled with droppings and you feel it must be washed, then do so in tepid water, no warmer or cooler than the egg, and ensure the egg is then stored in the fridge to be used as soon as possible.
When it's 9pm on a Sunday and you think you can sit down and relax for a bit, and then remember the eggs from the weekend haven't been graded! Got to get it done as the girls keep on laying them and a backlog isn't the way to start a Monday!
This is just a few- got a few more trays to get through yet!
We have our last few hens for this year available. They are just over 20 weeks of age and a few of them have already begun laying. So if you're looking for birds to give you a fresh egg supply through the winter, come and see us soon! We are now limited on breeds, so please check the website for updated availability.
