Thank you all for such wonderful feedback on the opening of our new 2nd hand department. Below is the link to more information
Here are the answers to a few of the questions I’ve had
What’s the commission ? The Equine Warehouse will take a 40% commission
What items are we taking in ? To begin with we would only like to take
🐴 Rugs
🐴 Horse Boots
🐴 Bits
🐴 Bridle Wear
🐴 Girths
🐴 Saddle pads
Do we have to pay separately for 2nd items ? No you don’t, they will go through the till with your other purchases as one transaction.
Will I gain my reward points ? Goodness we’re way too generous… yes you will!
Now get clearing out those tack rooms and bring in your items!

This is great image! For those that didn’t come to our first forum evening this was something that we discussed quite a lot! To feed your horse the essential balanced diet they need you must first be able to body condition score your horse!

𝗔 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 🤚
It’s important that we assess our horse or pony’s body condition at regular intervals throughout the year, to determine whether they’re a healthy weight. This goes for horses of all ages, but it can be particularly important for older horses, who may struggle to maintain their weight, especially in the colder months. The most simple way to do this is by using a body condition chart, such as the one by the Blue Cross, linked below.

1. Remove rugs and stand your horse on a flat surface
2. Take a good look at your horse from all angles, particularly focusing on the key fat and muscle areas
3. Feel along the crest of his neck – how does it feel? Muscle will feel firm and fat will feel spongy, however dangerous crest fat can feel hard and you may have difficulty moving it from side to side
4. Feel along the shoulder blade – is it clearly defined or has fat accumulated in front of the shoulder?
5. Run your hand lightly over his middle – can you feel his ribs? If you have to press firmly, he is carrying excess fat in this region
6. Across his back, can you feel his spine or has fat accumulated either side, causing a ‘gutter’?
7. Over to the croup and hindquarters, how visible are his hip bones?
8. Give you horse an honest score from 0-5 and reference the body score chart.

A weigh tape can also be a useful tool when assessing your horse’s condition. Although not always accurate, when used regularly, they give a clear indication as to whether your horse is gaining or losing weight as our eyes won’t necessarily notice small changes. Additionally, some nutritionists and vets will use a digital weigh bridge to measure your horse’s weight precisely, which can be invaluable especially when working out dosage for medications or wormers.

Do you ever just look at a your tack room or in my case sometimes my haybarn and think… I really must get those rugs cleaned and sold! But you just put it off… you have zero interest advertising on socials because people never turn up, or you get endless silly messages that result in still no sale ?
We’ve got this!! We’re opening a 2nd hand department! Think… good quality, sensible pricing… 😊 want to clear some space, get some money in for Christmas ? Perhaps you’d rather buy used than new? Buying 2nd hand is not only great for your pocket it’s great for the environment too
