If you’re looking for somewhere to boost your Christmas 🎄 spirit… then pop along to the The Sussex Christmas Barn it’s amazing! We went along to take some pictures of our Christmas HackWear Jumpers. The choice of decorations is incredible. Their trees are grown and nurtured on site… The cafe Isfield Farm Shop, butchers and village store serves a wonderful coffee and the chocolate brownies are to die for ❤️

See it’s not just me that says it!! The amazing Clare MacLeod MSc RNutr Independent Equine Nutritionist says it too!! The bag of feed provides the energy and nutrients for your horse to do the correct work… the correct work takes your horses muscle through a process that encourages the muscle to grow! If your horse ends up with “top line” without working… then your horse is putting down FAT!! End of… NOT muscle FAT!!!

WHAT CAN YOU FEED FOR TOPLINE?

It's a common question I get asked when horses are in less work than usual, for example when it's winter and weather and hours of light limit horse exercise.

The answer is (sadly) no, you can't build muscle from a feed or supplement, if the diet is already well balanced ie enough energy (calories) and protein (of adequate quality), and all the essential micronutrients.

And let's be honest, if there was something we - or our horses - could ingest that would build muscle then we'd all have six packs and our horses would have tremendous toplines.

It is exercise - muscle contraction - that builds muscle.

So a drop off is perfectly natural during periods of less exercise. Muscle is like many other body tissues - if you don't use it, you'll lose it.

Of course we had to have a delicious coffee from Isfield Farm Shop, butchers and village store. I’m afraid we were too quick to devour the chocolate brownie to take a picture of it!
