Torski and I did it again!!
A 4:30am start to the day yesterday as we travelled to Norfolk for the HWVCGB field trial at the beautiful Shadwell Estate.
We were 2nd to run and fresh out of the car after a horrendous 4.5hr drive!!
Torski ran well in the lush sugar beet covering ground with drive and purpose and had 3 very brief points, but the birds were really giving him the run around!
Asked up for a second run in some wild bird crop Torski hunted well, occasionally bouncing up like Tigger to check I was still there, a couple of indications and a nice point but again the birds were running, after a disconnect I turned him to go back and hunt up again to help him reconnect and as he went on point again the bird lifted beside him.
Steady to flush, shot and fall we were asked to come out of the cover to make the retrieve.
The bird had gone down into the beet and neither of us had marked it.
Given the area by the gun we set up for the retrieval, with lots of stop and multiple directions Torski made the retrieval delivering beautifully to hand.
The judges complimented his excellent response to the whistle and taking the handling and gave us great feedback on how we could improve.
We were awarded a CoM and we are very pleased to have had the opportunity to run again.
Huge Thank you to our judges, guns, stewards and fellow competitors for such a great day but most of all to Tracie Rickman for making it all possible for us. ❤️🐾

We did it again… A last minute withdrawal provided a run for us.
We got number 9 again!
The picture of Torski sums our run up… I sooo let him down today! 😩
We had the end corner of a beautiful crop field with what started out as a diagonal back wind. I was informed by the judge that there was a possibility that a pricked partridge was down by us. Pricked partridge are a curse for us and feature in my nightmares!!
I cast Torski out and the rest is a total handler train wreck.
He picked up a scent went on point and flushed on cue, a pair of partridge lifted, he sat, stayed sitting through the shots but sadly no bird was hit, he watched them away we were then asked to hunt on.
Torski continued to pull back to the residual scent or the pricked bird and I had a total brain freeze.
My ground treatment was appalling, despite Torski asking for support and instructions, I gave him none, I stood scarecrow like in the field and my head left my body.
Despite me Torski connected with more scent and started to work it out but that was it for us, the judges had seen enough 😂
The positives to take away from it were the judges asked for a chat afterwards to explain why we weren’t invited to run again, they said he had a very graceful hunting style and hunted with purpose and a sensitive nose. They didn’t berate me for my scarecrow act but acknowledged it 😵‍💫
So a huge thank you to Annie Jones and Kathy Connor for being so kind.
Ruth Webster for putting together a wonderful trial.
To Francis Briley for the great ground & the guns and to all the fabulous people that competed today.
I’m going to lie down in a dark room and reflect on my shortcomings 😵‍💫😩🤪

Today young Torski and I did a thing… We ran in our first field trial together.
Torski was drooling with excitement watching the other dogs run and then it was our turn.
Torski was slow to get out at the start and spent time eyeing the guns and judges whilst getting a feel for the situation. Eventually he mentally settled and began quartering nicely, covering the guns and taking nice bites of ground, he got a scent and lost it as quick as he found it so turned back on himself to reconnect then bang on point! Even his tail was still 😂
We claimed our point and was asked by the judge to produce the bird.
Torski flushed with gusto and a single partridge got up, he sat to flush, remained seated for the shot and stayed seated for the fall, marking well.
We were asked to retrieve the bird.
Torski went out with real enthusiasm and then bang! went on point again 😩 he was pointing the same bird as it was only pricked and giving him eye. A brief discussion with the judges and I was asked to make the retrieval if I was confident it was not fresh live game he was pointing.
A little persuasion and he picked the bird and returned with it holding beautifully whilst it was fussing and flapping.
Unfortunately he put the bird down and looked up at me for reassurance, sadly we were put out.
The judge’s commended his soft mouth and beautiful point so only positives to take away.
Huge thank you to Shirley Mattravers and the HVC, the judges Mr Alan Hender and Mr Nigel Wroe, Francis Briley for the super grounds, the guns, the steward and the friendly competitors that made us feel so welcome. 🙏🏼
I came home with the very best dog of the day ❤️🐾

I’ve cut this video down.
It was 13 minutes long.
At the start Torski went on point approximately 50 metres from where the bird lifted.
We walked in together until Torski stalled and stilled his tail.
At this stage he began to “taste scent”, you can see his mouth working.
Torski enjoys holding his point, this part of the hunting process is very rewarding for him.
Watch how he spins back after the flush to “hoover” more scent from where the bird was sitting.
I will never tire of watching HPR’s locate game. ❤️🐾
