🐶 How to Spot Early Signs of Illness in Dogs 🐶

Noticing the early signs of illness in your dog can make a huge difference. Here are key symptoms to watch for:

1️⃣ Vomiting and Diarrhoea - Frequent vomiting or diarrhoea, especially with blood, can signal serious issues. Consult your vet if you notice these symptoms.

2️⃣ Behavioural Changes - Irritability, isolation, excessive panting, or aggression may indicate illness. Lethargy and unusual behaviour should also be checked by a vet.

3️⃣ Vocal Signals - Increased whining, whimpering, or barking at odd times could mean your dog is in pain or discomfort.

As a , I can tell you that small dogs often get away with more. Here are 5 key differences to keep in mind:

1️⃣ Perception of Behaviour: Small dogs jumping up can be seen as cute, while large dogs doing the same can be a safety hazard. Large dogs need stronger training for safety and politeness.

2️⃣ Looming Effect: For small dogs, leaning over them can seem threatening. Stay upright or kneel to avoid causing anxiety and to foster better learning.

3️⃣ Generalising Commands: Small dogs may struggle to generalise commands if you always train them from the same position. Vary your position gradually to help them understand commands apply no matter your stance.

4️⃣ Food Motivation: Small dogs fill up quickly and may be sensitive to rich foods. Use tiny treats or a dab of baby food as rewards. For large dogs, keep treats out of sight to prevent distractions.

5️⃣ Physical Challenges: Small dogs might find commands like “sit” or “down” harder to master. Break down these commands into smaller steps and celebrate every little progress to encourage them.
