DOGS DAY OUT:
With Otis, Frank, Poppy & Melon

Our volunteers & pups took advantage of the sunny skies & enjoyed a day trip out to the park.

All of the dogs did us proud; travelling well in the car, walking beautifully on their leads & sitting patiently in the cafe. Being all round fantastic representatives for The Max & George Trust, flying the flag for ALL rescue dogs of different shapes & sizes!
Well done to the whole gang!

It’s happening all across the Country, in the background, quietly and going unnoticed with no end in sight. It’s been going on for well over a year.

Rescue centres are at crisis point and closing their doors, turning dogs away due to lack of resources and space.

Yesterday, it happened to us and for the first time in 9 years we couldn’t help a dog in need.

This decision was and is heartbreaking. It affects us all here in ways people cannot be expected to understand. Suffice to say the emotional toll it takes on our mental health is immeasurable. It’s sometimes the ones we can’t help that haunt us more.

What really is an animal rescue centre?

Every animal rescue centre will define themselves differently but at the very core ALL animal rescues ARE the frontline service to animals in need. It’s that simple.

We are the equivalent of the A&E hospital, the local homeless shelter, the mental health department and social workers all wrapped into one BECAUSE animals arrive hurt, injured and sick. Animals arrive shut down needing time to decompress, rebalance their emotions before they can begin to heal, they arrive abandoned having lost the home they felt safe in & some arrive from domestic abuse, owner deaths or found themselves lost.

This is what we are as a dog rescue. We are a frontline service to a dog in need

And just like A&E departments all across the UK we are feeling the strain. Most of us are aware of the overwhelming strains our local A&E departments face daily. We see patients in need of treatment forced to wait in ambulances stacked in the car park and patients in beds left in corridors because there is no space.

I am quite sure most people will agree it’s far from ideal but necessary in extreme emergencies. Eventually ALL patients get the help they need & no-one is turned away BECAUSE A&E departments are the frontline for us humans in our time of need,

This is exactly what an animal rescue centre is for an animal in need. This is what we are to dogs in need, sometimes, to help a dog in desperate need we have to improvise OR let that dog die. We have always acted to the best of our ability, where we can, in the face of an emergency because if we don’t ... who will ? Would you ?

But, like all rescues we are at crisis point. We are experiencing unprecedented amount of dogs needing a roof over their head, dogs who are sick because owners cannot afford veterinary costs and dogs that are suffering from the effects of lock down with behavioural issues at a level unseen before Covid.

Unlike A&E departments, we receive NO government help. NO help or support from the local council. No grants or funding handouts. Instead we rely on volunteers willing to give up their time to help. We rely on the generosity of our supporters who kindly donate small amounts of cash when we make an appeal, or much needed food donations to help us keep the dogs fed and blankets for bedding to keep the dogs warm and comfortable.

We don’t get anywhere near the support large rescues get. No small local rescue can compete or even tries to but all local small rescues are there for their community and we are ALL in need of more help.

Yesterday, for the first time we had to turn away a dog in need because we do not have the funds to treat him or get him medical help. The poor, elderly dog that appeared in good spirits, very much full of life and love presented with a large growth on his rear leg.

Sadly, his owner, at 98 years has recently been admitted to an end of life cate home where his four legged best friend is not welcome. He is no longer able to provide for his much loved companion who has shown nothing but love and loyalty for 14 years.

Can you imagine the crushing despair, guilt and soul destroying sadness we feel at having to say we couldn’t help.

But the reality is we could not. We just don’t have the money. Our vet bills are at a record high. Dogs needing homes is at a record high. Dogs needing medical treatment is at a record high. BUT our resources are at a record low.

What would happen if we weren’t here? Would anyone notice us gone?

We NEED your support more than ever. We NEED your help to help is help them. Without us, where can they go?

The cost of living crisis is hitting ALL animal rescue centres hard, electricity bills are through the roof combined with water, rates and waste collection bills also on the increase it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep going. Then there’s the medical costs and veterinary bills that are soaring.

More than ever before, we need your support to help us with our veterinary costs. We don’t want to turn away another dog in need.

Perhaps you could forego a cup of coffee from Costa or Starbucks for one day and donate what you would have spent to us. That one cup of coffee will not kill Costa or Starbucks but for us it’s a whole world of life saving difference.

Please, if you are in a position to make a donation, no matter how small, you can help him by donating here:

100% of the donations we receive go towards the dogs care.

Timid twosome Alma & Hugo enjoyed a trip out with kennel manager Lyndsey & husbsnd Chris.

Alma (aka Lottie) & Hugo are both quite shy dogs when you first meet them, but given time & patience, their trust & confidence grows, blossoming into bound full & fun loving pooches.

As shy as she is with humans, Alma more than makes up for it by being the most popular dog on the block... they all want to be her best friend! So if you are looking for a new playmate for your pooch, Alma is the girl for you!

Our Story

The Max & George Trust was set up in 2016 after Max sadly and unexpectedly died from Leishmaniasis (Leish). Max and George were both rescued from awful situations in Spain and it was discovered they had Leish. Leish is relatively unheard of in the UK and therefore treatment is very expensive and some UK vets have little or no experience in dealing with the disease compared to vets in Countries where Leish is prevalent. The Trust aims to help other dog owners here in the UK that have animals affected by the disease in anyway it can, including support, treatment plans, treatment costs and emergency care when needed. We are supported by two incredibly amazing vets who are both very experienced in treating the disease.

We also rescue dogs that are in desperate need of help regardless of where they come from, be it the UK or abroad. Many of the dogs we have rescued would have been put to sleep if we had not stepped in, or, needed urgent medical attention as in the case of Charlie who had been shot and was living in a shelter the bullet still in his leg or Domino who would have been put to sleep here in the UK just because of his age through no fault of his owner.

We want to continue to support dogs with Leish and rescue more animals in dire need but to do that we need help. You can help us continue our work in many ways, such as by donation, buying a personalised gift from us, doing your normal everyday shopping using our cashback card so we get cashback as well as you, becoming a fosterer or even adopting. You could even hold fundraisers for us like a coffee morning because every little helps and here’s a really easy thing you can do to help...... just share our FB page with your friends & family. Helping us get more support and likes might just end up saving a dogs life! However, you choose to support us, thank you ###
