REMEMBRANCE

Today is the 11th day of the 11th month, 105 years since the end of WWI and 78 years since the end of WWII. Whilst the last WWI veteran, Florence Green, died in 2012, there are many WWII veterans still surviving. Our acts of remembrance pay tribute to all those people who gave their service to their countries, and in many cases their lives, to defend the freedom of future generations.

As horse lovers we may flinch at the horror of war for a fight of flight animal amongst the thunderous sounds and flashes of the guns. In WWI in particular, large numbers of horses were requisitioned by the army. It was not uncommon for owners to spare their horses by shooting them before the army arrived to take them. It has been estimated that 8 million horses, donkeys and mules died in WWI. Around three-quarters of them are believed to have died from exhaustion and disease, with only a quarter being shot or gassed. It has been said that Britain alone lost almost ½ million horses, one for every two men killed. In WWII considerably fewer horses were used by the British as mechanisation in the forms of trucks, tanks, etc took over although the Russians and the Germans continued to use significant numbers of horses.

One might contemplate that at least the men and women fighting in these wars could on some level understand what was happening. For the horses, mules and donkeys it was almost certainly a hell they could not comprehend. The bond between man and horse is special and today we should reflect on how lucky we are to have that relationship and remember all who gave their lives.

CANCELLATIONS

A polite reminder that we operate a 48 hour cancellation policy!

We are a small business, and like to keep lesson numbers half of other establishments in order to provide a quality lesson. For this reason no shows or extremely late cancellations greatly affect us.

A little bit of rain, or your child has been naughty are not acceptable reasons to cancel an hour before a lesson time.

Anyone not showing up, or cancelling last minute will need to pay at time of booking if wishing to return. Places will not be held open, and offered to the waiting list.

Bookings are non-refundable, however can be rearranged if the adequate notice given.

The only exception for a late cancellation is for Covid symptoms, or testing positive!

Thank you for your continued support.

On behalf of the equestrian community, British Equestrian would like to offer our sincere condolences to HM The Queen and the royal family following the sad news of the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

His association with the equine industry was a long and passionate one, and he was the epitome of the all-round horseman, both in and out of the saddle. Many in the equestrian world owe him a debt of gratitude for his unstinting support and his vision to progress, and our community will deeply feel his loss.

🐴 Horses are beautiful and lovely to look at when you're out horsing around, but please do not feed them without the owner's permission! Horses could be on specialist diets, or could even choke if the food isn't properly prepared. Read more advice: http://bit.ly/2O2FGRy

21/01/2021

⚠ BE HORSE AWARE – PLEASE DO NOT FEED OTHER PEOPLE’S HORSES ⚠

At this time of year with the rain and snow, fields can have less grass and more mud so it may be tempting to feed other people’s horses.

But if there isn’t much grass in the field, please look out for signs that extra food is being given. This includes:
🌾 Hay scraps left on the ground from where hay has been provided earlier in the day / evening
🐴 Horses congregating around gates at a certain time, anticipating being brought in to a stable or waiting to be fed
🌾 Haynets hung up around the field area
🐴 Feed buckets in the field

Although frequently motivated by kindness, feeding unknown horses can result in horrifying unintended consequences by making the horse extremely ill - in some cases horses have died.

To help prevent these incidents occurring the BHS urges members of the public NOT to feed horses.

📣 PLEASE SHARE this post so we can reach more people and help protect the welfare of everyone’s horses. 📣

If you do have serious concerns about horses having no food or grass and/or horses looking thin, and you have monitored the situation for a few days, contact our Welfare team for further advice on 02476 840517 or [email protected]

🏇🏽🏇🏽 1-2-1 Lessons 🏇🏽🏇🏽

From tomorrow we will be running 30 minute private lessons.

We have reduced the usual 40 minute private lesson by 10 minutes to try and accommodate as many of our riders as possible. We have therefore reduced the price also from £30 to £20.

There are a number of people we have been unable to contact today, please give us a call if you would like to book as we have only a few slots left.

UPDATE - Sunday now full.

***New Procedures ***

* On arrival can parents of children please park on the new parking area alongside the arena. This will allow you to view the lesson as we cannot have spectators at the gates or along the fence line.

* 5 minutes before lesson time ponies can be collected from the top yard and the arena entered from the top gate.

* Exiting the lesson will be from the bottom gate so we have a one way system. Children can be collected from the bottom yard.

* A reminder that all riders must wear gloves at all times.

Thank you all for your patience this week, it’s been an extremely frustrating time for us all.
