Great post! xx

These dogs really are everywhere.
They are often mislabeled as friendly by the guardian/owner as that is how they are seen by them.....They barge right in to "play" with other dogs the second the lead is taken off, before then they are straining, bursting out of their skin to get to whatever they are desiring at the time....and allowing dogs to do this is half the issue.

This behaviour has been rewarded by the "play" and fun of interacting.....Why would they behave any other way around other dogs?
They are not friendly.
Dogs do not consider these dogs friendly either.
Why?
These dogs take no time to assess the situation, their energy is off the charts and they immediately assert themselves into play, and demand interaction from other dogs.

They cannot read cues, or they completely ignore them when given by other dogs.
Reading other dogs play styles is non existent.
Focusing on you or redirecting is impossible.
There is absolutely no impulse control or emotional self regulation.

These dogs are often seen at a dog park running from dog to dog in a hyper aroused state and they often have an almost manic appearance, all of this causes fights, injury, stress and is a direct causation of reactivity occurring in either dog.

I have used the term "socialisation" but socialisation is NOT play....it never was....it is about calmly accepting other dogs exist through controlled exposure.
That calmness allows self regulation, allows reading cues from others and impulse control is practiced.
As a society we have a twisted view that socialisation means dogs play with all other dogs....and they should get on.
The reality of TRUE socialisation is the opposite.

If you do have a dog that has these issues...you can help (but if you reach out to a good behaviour modification trainer, you will save yourself years and years of issues).

Teach engagement with you in ever increasing distractions.
Practice and learn calmness....it is a skill.
Manage the environment for calm and limited exposure at a distance....and reward calm.
Praise and reward when they look away from the other dogs....that IS praise worthy.
Mental enrichment with these dogs helps everything.
Learn the body language of your dog (and others).

You are not alone in struggling with this behaviour, it is very common.
Take a chance that your dog CAN behave in a different way, they just need to be shown how by you or a great trainer.

Limit where and when they can practice this behaviour......and most important dog parks and meeting endless other dogs will do nothing but fuel all of this behaviour.

APRIL EVENT
April is a busy month for us, so we only have one event but it's a BIG one 🐣
Everyone loves an Easter egg hunt... well now the dogs can join in too!

Come along and let your dogs sniff their way around our 5km route, searching out a variety of different treats, games and activities along the way!

The whole family is invited with treats and activities for you and the kids as well!

Starting at the shop to pick up your treat collecting bag, and get your first clue, the route takes you along winding canals and through open fields. So leave your fancy shoes (and slippers) at home! 👠

Finishing up in our enrichment field to share and show off what you have found! And grab yourself a well deserved coffee and cake. 🍰

To take part in the hunt it is £10, this will include your treat bag, over £12 worth of treats (if you find them all) entry to the enrichment and a tea/coffee at the finish line.

No need to book, just come along and bring a friend!

The hunt will open at 10.30am but you can arrive anytime after then to start! Last treat bags will be handed out at 2pm latest.

🐣🐑🐰🐶

The route can be cut short if you are unable to walk 5km, the route unfortunately is not fully accessible with wheelchairs/pushchairs but if you get in touch we can work around any requirements!

We have a whole team of charities and volunteers helping us along the way so please bring any change you can spare to support all the local causes.

*Wednesday 24th February @ 7.30pm*

A 30-minute online puppy party via zoom for lockdown puppy owners to connect, introduce your puppies, share your experiences and chat through basic puppy behaviours with an IMDT trainer.

Under the current lockdown circumstances, sometimes it can feel like you're quite alone with your puppy, having struggles that not everyone understands. This online session is a great opportunity to connect with others who have also taken on puppies recently from the comfort of your own home, where you can chat, share and support each other.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions about basic puppy behaviours, a fun interactive game and a printable certificate of attendance. Numbers are limited to five to allow everyone time to talk and share.

Booking is available through the website at https://pawsitiveintentions.co.uk/product/online-puppy-social

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ to all cat and dog owners

With the cold weather expected and frosty spells approaching, our roads and paths will be gritted to keep us safe

Please make sure if you walk your dog over gritted roads/paths that you rinse their feet in fresh water once you're home

Also ensure to check your cats paws once they're home from exploring!

Every year hundreds of beloved pets become seriously ill and in some cases fatally ill due to rock salt spread on the roads and antifreeze used by motorists in the cold snap

As they lick their paws clean they are ingesting these dangerous substances

Consuming rock salt can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis, while antifreeze contains the chemical ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested.

Stay safe! 🐾❄
