We are pleased to announce that we are holding a summer special offer !

Advanced Dental Health Check including Sedation with FREE Oral Endoscopy £105.00

Dental disease is one of the most common chronic healthcare conditions in domesticated animals, including horses – up to 95% of horses have at least one dental disorder. However, its presence is often missed due to horses being naturally stoic. Clinical signs of dental disease can be subtle and difficult to identify, or may only be present in severe cases.
Diagnosis and treatment of dental disease is therefore often reliant on regular, routine oral examinations by a veterinary surgeon or suitably qualified equine dental technician.
Oral endoscopy provides high-definition images and is superior to standard oral examinations in identifying dental pathology. The small size of the endoscope is able to easily visualise areas at the back of the mouth and either side of the tongue, and it may be better tolerated by horses than the dental mirrors typically used – particularly in horses with painful dental lesions.
It is recommended that all horses undergo a complete oral and dental examination every 6-12 months. Why not take advantage of our advanced dental health check offer, including free oral endoscopy and sedation, with a member of our Dentistry & Maxiofacial Referral veterinary team?

*Terms and conditions apply.
Payable at time of booking
*Advanced Dental Health Check (ADHC) must be performed at Pool House Equine Hospital to take up the FREE Oral Endoscopy offer, sedation MUST be used and is included in the price. If Odontoplasty (‘rasping’) is required it will be tailored to your horse’s needs to correct any malocclusions there will be an additional charge for this and any other dental treatments/procedures advised.

Thank you Lauren Spibey for taking the time to email in, it's so good to hear how well Toby is doing 🐴💙

"Following on from Toby’s 6 month check up this week, we thought we’d write in to say the biggest thank you to everyone at Pool House for the wonderful care we received over Christmas when Toby had to have a lateral alveolar ostectomy to remove a broken and infected tooth. We are so grateful for all the yard staff for working so hard over the Christmas period. And of course to Sam and Milly who were incredible not only in their care for Toby but also managed to perform this under standing sedation rather than general anaesthetic which makes Toby one of a kind!
Here’s some photos of him home, fit and healthy and enjoying life again."

Please do keep sending in your updates and photos, we really love hearing from you.

We would like to introduce you to our new team member Liri Ben David MRCVS.
Liri joins the Ambulatory Veterinary team and is a great addition to Pool House Equine Hospital.

After graduating from the University of Pisa (Italy) in 2020, Liri went on to establish his own ambulatory equine veterinary clinic in Israel, where he specialised in reproduction of Arab horses in the Bedouin community, and welfare cases.

He then relocated to England in 2023 and completed an internship at Leahurst Equine Hospital in Liverpool before joining the Pool House ambulatory team in 2024.

As a rider and horse enthusiast himself, Liri enjoys all aspects of ambulatory work, but his main areas of interest include surgery, lameness, and emergency care.

When he’s not on the road to treat one of our patients, Liri enjoys hiking, travelling, and walking his bull terrier dog Olivia

Thank you to Molly Drew for sending an update on Bentley, it's so good to hear how well he's doing after his Keratoma surgery performed by Jonathan Withers in December last year.

"I just want to thank you all for the most top quality care. Bentley had a keratoma removal at the start of December and now we are back riding and he has moved to heart bar shoes. I have attached some pictures.
He is recovering amazingly and I cannot thank you all enough."

The dangers of ragwort – the effects of ragwort on your horse
The toxins in ragwort are absorbed into the blood stream and are broken down in the liver. This damages the liver and over time will cause liver failure. Sometimes the effects of eating ragwort are only seen a long time after the horse’s exposure to the plant, as the liver damage continues long after eating the plant. Eating a small amount over a long period of time can cause the same damage as one large amount being consumed. Signs of ragwort poisoning include:
Lethargy, photosensitivity, significant weight loss, blindness, difficulty breathing and loss of balance.

Ragwort – what to look for
Ragwort during the colder months can be seen as dark green rosettes of leaves growing low on the ground. At this early stage, it is easier to remove them. If you use a herbicide at this stage, then digging them up is easier and you are less likely to have a lot of the weeds growing the following year.
Once ragwort has flowered (seen as bright yellow flowers densely growing together) then you have the risk of seed dispersal where you may have a greater problem the following year.

We loved receiving this recent email from Lauren regarding her beautiful horse Hooriya, and it's fantastic to hear how well she is doing 🐴🩷

" I always see your follow ups on Facebook for your previous patients and thought it was about time I shared how my lovely Hooriya (Angel) has been getting on.

She came to you August last year with a nasty colic impaction, resulting in surgery. It has been a very long and rocky recovery even after she was released back to me and there were many times I doubted she'd pull through!

But here we are, she's fighting fit and absolutely amazing! Dare I even say she's better than before. She's loving a varied lifestyle to keep her busy but dressage is where she shines! We've been out competing multiple times already this year and her scores just keep getting better!

I've attached some recent photos of her for you all.

I cannot thank your team enough for all of your hard work, she really was in the best hands with you and I will be eternally grateful. She really is one in a million and I can't wait to see where we end up in the future!

Thank you all again, from the bottom of my heart! You're all amazing!

Thank you, Lauren Tye"

The dangers of ragwort – handling and removing ragwort
Please wear sturdy gardening gloves when handling ragwort as the plants can also be harmful to humans. We also recommend that you cover your arms and legs and wear a facemask to avoid inhaling any of the pollen or seeds from the plants.
Disposal of ragwort should be either by controlled burning, rotting in a secure compost bin, or pay a suitable waste management company to dispose of it for you.

Ragwort plants are now starting to grow and appear, over the next few days we will explain why it is so important to remove these poisonous plants from your horses' fields.

The dangers of ragwort – about the plants
Did you know that ragwort plant are poisonous all year round? But because the plants are bitter tasting, most horses will avoid eating them. However, it is always a good idea to remove plants from areas where your horses will graze.
Also be careful that there are no plants within your hay or haylage as cut or wilted ragwort becomes more palatable to horses.

Equine gastric ulcers (EGUS)

EGUS describes the erosion of the horse’s stomach lining, due to prolonged exposure to the acid produced by the stomach and is reported to affect at least 1 in 3 equines.

If you are worried your horse may have EGUS, a gastroscopy can provide a definitive answer as to whether your horse is suffering from gastric ulcers. Whether your horse is not just right or to be pro active about your horses health a gastroscope can provide peace of mind and provide a targeted pathway to treatment if needed.
Please contact reception on 01283799700 for further advise or to arrange an gastroscope.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month -Pharmacy and stock control.

Nursing Technician Lisa ensures we have enough stock of pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, pain medication, vaccinations etc) and consumables (bandage materials, syringes, surgical gowns and drapes etc) to ensure the Hospital is able to function and treat patients within the hospital and stock the ambulatory team's cars to treat patients on the road too. Deliveries arrive most days to the practice and there can be lots of boxes from numerous suppliers, stock counts and rotations, monitoring the temperature in pharmacy, along with sourcing from different suppliers means not a day goes by without an order for something being placed.
