'FLOCKDOWN' TO END AT BEGINNING OF MAY
Defra has announced that mandatory housing measures for poultry and captive birds, which were introduced across the UK to help stop the spread of bird flu, will be lifted from 00:01 on Monday 2 May 2022.
Poultry and other captive birds will no longer need to be housed, unless they are in a Protection Zone, and they will be allowed to be kept outside. While the risk of bird flu has been reduced to β€˜medium’ for premises with poor biosecurity, the enhanced biosecurity requirements that were brought in as part of the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) will remain in force as infection may still be circulating in the environment for several more weeks. All poultry gatherings will remain banned.
Those who intend to allow their birds outside are advised to use the upcoming days to prepare their outside areas for the release of their birds. This will include cleansing and disinfection of hard surfaces, fencing off ponds or standing water and the reintroduction of wild bird deterrents.
The UK has faced its largest ever outbreak of bird flu with over 100 cases confirmed across the country since late October. Scrupulous biosecurity is the most effective method of disease control available and all bird keepers should apply enhanced measures at all times to prevent the risk of future outbreaks.

DID YOU KNOW WE ARE A CALF AT FOOT DAIRY?!

An program last night, cast a very dim light over the industry that we work so hard & so passionately for - 365 days of the year.

It was sad to see some awful treatment of some cows & calves and every single dairy farmer worth their salt would absolutely condemn this behaviour and seek to rid dairy farms (or any farm) of individuals who would treat an animal so badly.

But as a consumer, you can play a part too. Milk price paid to farmers for the milk produced on their farms has been extremely poor for many, many years. There have been times where price paid per litre of milk, has not covered the cost of production.

So why is milk so cheap? Supermarkets often sell milk as what they call a "loss leader" - meaning they sell it at a very low price (essentially at a loss) to get customers through the door. They then recoup this loss by bumping up the price on other products.

But unfortunately, in order to then stay in business- this means dairy farmers have to either go big & try and produce more & more milk (large quantities of cheap milk) or try and produce smaller amounts of milk but attempt to add value somehow (for example organic milk, calf at foot milk, Channel Island breed milk)

There are some fantastic staff within the industry, but when farms are having to produce large amounts of cheap milk - this can mean needing a higher number of staff, required to work long & anti social hours. Unfortunately, such willing people are often in short supply, meaning unskilled labour has to plug the gap and this is often where empathy & welfare standards can slip.

So as a consumer, please- try to pay a bit more for your milk, look for smaller producers or even try & buy direct from farms.
Have a map on their website showing places you can buy milk direct from farms (often in glass too, to reduce plastic usage!) and
Have details on their website of producers throughout the country where you can buy direct from farms.

We've been leaving our calves on our cows since last June. It's enabled us to drastically reduce the need for staff & is really working well for us.
