The amazing Mani was brought into us last week after his owner had noticed his abdomen was swollen.
A clinical examination and abdominal ultrasound scan confirmed that Mani had a very large abdominal mass originating from his spleen, which was taking up over two thirds of his abdominal cavity!
We took him to surgery straight away to remove the spleen along with the associated mass, which weighed in at almost 3kg!
A dogs spleen should be approximately the size and length of their forearm - so it is easy to appreciate just how large this splenic mass was in this little French Bulldog!
The spleen in dogs acts as a reservoir for red blood cells and platelets, as well as having some immune function. Though, they can live well without it when it has to be removed in cases such as Mani’s, where rupture of such masses can be life threatening.
Mani went on to make a brilliant recovery and here you can see him in the photos just over a week later schmoozing the team for gravy bones - which we were only too happy to oblige for a very brave and the goodest boy! We're in awe of this little man! Keep doing your thing! 🥰 🥰 🥰
