I know youโ€™ve all been waiting and here is Spooks who is a little cat with a wonderful story. โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿพ

She was diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus in July 2023 after her owner had noticed a slight increase in drinking. She had been managed since then on twice daily Insulin injections (Caninsulin), which her owners were able to give at home.

Unfortunately, in October 2024 Spooks presented to us as a weekend emergency as she had acutely become very lethargic, vomiting and off her food (very out of character!). We were instantly concerned Spooks may be experiencing Diabetes Ketoacidosis (DKA)- a life-threatening metabolic crisis that is caused by a loss of diabetic control and often triggered by other systemic disease (e.g. infection, gum disease, tumours). This was unfortunately confirmed by a significant elevation in blood glucose and ketones in the urine. Spooks was also severely dehydrated and further testing revealed she was suffering from both a urinary tract infection and pancreatitis.

We transferred Spooks as an emergency referral to the amazing ECC team at DWR in Cambridge, whose specialists helped us over the phone to stabilise Spooks and prepare the ICU for her arrival, where she was then hospitalised for 5 days.

A DKA is a true medical emergency, and unfortunately we can see high mortality rates despite intensive treatment. Thankfully, after several days of intravenous fluids, medications and feeding tubes, Spooks responded favourably and she was discharged home.

Spooks' insulin was switched to Protamine Zinc Insulin (Prozinc) at this point, with the aim of providing her with a more stable glycaemic control.

Since October, Spooks has come along in leaps and bounds. Her diabetes is under excellent control currently, and her owners periodically check her ketone levels at home to make sure everything is still where it should be.

Spooks has also undergone a dental procedure in the last few months, ensuring her teeth and gums are in top condition.

In addition, she has recently started monthly pain relief injections (Solensia) to help with her arthritis. Her owners have noticed a big improvement even within days of starting this medication, saying Spooks is now happily jumping onto surfaces again (no doubt looking for mischief!) and experiencing 'zoomies' for the first time in years.

Her owners are truly dedicated and have done a wonderful job of ensuring an excellent quality of life for Spooks since her diagnosis. She is a real character and we love treating her!

Platelet-rich plasma therapy with Dr James Cook MRCVS at The Pet Vet Lincoln!

In addition to being a highly experienced surgeon and GP, our new Head Vet Dr James Cook MRCVS is introducing a new orthobiologic treatment to support the treatment of pets with inflammatory conditions that affect joints, such as osteoarthritis.

This is in the form of platelet-rich plasma injections, which involves using a petโ€™s own blood to reduce inflammation and prolong longevity of diseased joints. In addition to assisting in the treatment of inflammatory conditions, it can also support bone regeneration after a fracture.

Here's a video with James talking through platelet-rich plasma therapy in more detail and how it can benefit pets.

We're delighted to be able to offer this service at The Pet Vet Lincoln!
