Meet the gorgeous Gem 🐢 Gem's owner enrolled her in our weight management program earlier this year. Together, we tailored a diet plan specifically for Gem to help her shed some of her excess weight. At the outset, she weighed in at 35kg.

Today, Gem returned for her follow-up appointment, and the progress is remarkable! She now weighs 28.8kg, showing significant improvement in her energy levels and mobility. Although she still has a bit more weight to lose, we're confident that with the continued dedication of her family, Gem will soon achieve her target weight! ⭐

We couldn't possibly end National Volunteer Week without mentioning Terry Pearson - our Head of Commercial Services & Estate. Terry has been a Trustee at Bradford Cinderella Club since 1990 (yes, you read that right!).

The Cinderella Club has one basic aim, which is to improve life for the underprivileged children of Bradford. They work to achieve this through enabling them to:

➑️ Participate in activities alongside their school friends.
➑️ Obtain some of the desirables in life that others take for granted.
➑️ Obtain some of the necessities for life within their own area of need.

Terry says: "As an active member of the charity, I try to bring my life skills to benefit the club and the children it exists to assist. This could be anything, ranging from providing input into funding applications, or generally using my knowledge dealing with the situations life in the 21st Century throws at entities such as ours."

Terry has also been Chairman/Trustee & Managing Director of Eccleshill Mechanics Institute since 2017. Terry is involved with this vital community hub across all levels, from securing the building for the community with a 99-year lease, to cooking up a storm with his bistro nights and fish & chip Fridays! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³

This National Volunteer Week, we thought we'd share the adventures of RVN Megan who jetted off to volunteer her skills & expertise in Greece!

Megan spent 2 weeks volunteering on the island of Paxos on a workplace-sponsored trip, facilitated by local charity PAWS (Paxos Animal Welfare Society). PAWS runs entirely on the support of volunteers.

On her experience, Megan said...

β€œMy first impressions were how amazing the facilities were; from having a fully functioning anaesthetic machine with an oxygen generator, and an autoclave for ensuring we could safely sterilise the instruments being used.

β€œThe amazing team of volunteers would spend a lot of time out on the island trapping cats for us. We would then safely transfer them to crush cages so they could be anaesthetised and prepared for surgery.

β€œThe cats were provided with adequate sedation and pain relief to allow the Vet to perform surgery while myself and a fellow veterinary nurse would take it in turns monitoring or preparing the next patient for surgery.

β€œAll cats are ear tipped so once fully recovered, they can be safely released back and identified as neutered so they are not trapped again.

β€œAs well as neutering we would provide other health care as needed, such as removing rotten and broken teeth, ear tipping for cats suffering from cancer, and for one patient, we even placed a makeshift dressing on after finding out he had fractured his leg!

β€œWith all our hard work, we managed to neuter over 109 cats! What an achievement for only 2 weeks on the island. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to break that record on my next trip if we can!”

Let's face it, some of our pets have zero concept of personal space. And most of the time, we absolutely love it! However, if they have particularly pongy breath, this may cause problems (for your nose, at least) when they lean in a little closer...πŸ‘ƒ

Did you know pet breath shouldn't actually smell bad? By maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, you can keep suspicious smells at bay, as well as many other signs of dental disease. 🦷

During a dental health check, our team can examine your pet's teeth and spot any potential issues before they have a chance to develop into anything more serious (or expensive).

If you have any concerns about your pet's teeth, don't delay coming in to see our team!

Receive a full re-start on your pet's vaccinations for the price of a booster - until 31 May 2024!

🐢 For dogs, this includes: parvovirus, distemper, leptospirosis and hepatitis.
🐱 For cats, this includes: feline leukaemia, flu and enteritis.

Layla is here to remind all owners of unmicrochipped cats that there's an important change in the law coming into force next month! πŸ“’

From 10 June 2024, cats in England will need to be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they're 20 weeks old. You could be fined up to Β£500 if your dog or cat is not microchipped when they need to be.

Microchipping is a super quick and straightforward to do. The chip is approximately the same size as a grain of rice and it will take our team just a few seconds to insert it just under the skin between their shoulder blades.

It's then your responsibility to make sure the contact details registered against your pet's microchip are kept up to date. For example, in the event you move home or change your telephone number.

Contact our team today to secure your microchipping appointment before 10 June: https://www.thepetvet.co.uk/contact-us

02/05/2024

⚠️ Designer cross breeds, including Cavapoos, Cockapoos, Goldendoodles and Cavachons have a higher risk of becoming infested by ticks due to their Poodle parentage. 🐩

This is according to new research by the RVC (Royal Veterinary College).

Ticks are small, spider-like external parasites that can latch onto a pet and feed off their blood, risking the transmission of disease in the process. They live in long grass and wooded areas and latch onto a passing pet when they brush past. While they can be a threat all year round, their 'peak' season is March to October.

It's crucial a tick is removed in the right way, using a tick remover tool. This is because squeezing a tick’s body can cause it to expel blood back into your pet, increasing the risk of infection. Also: step away from the tweezers! This can result in the tick's body breaking away from it's head, which can remain embedded in your pet's skin.

➑️ If you have any concerns about ticks or find one on your pet and would like our team to remove it for you, please get in touch.

Bertie (owned by Senior Vet Linda at our Rotherham surgery) recently donated his blood so that we could make serum eye drops for this lovely patient, Axel.

Axel had bilateral ulcers needing one eye removed earlier in the month and has been having medical management in the other for a few weeks. Bertie provided the blood sample as Axel doesn't like having his bloods taken but the drops were vital for his treatment.

Here's Axel before and during his surgery, and Bertie being a very good boy having his bloods taken. Lots of gravy bones came shortly afterwards!
