Grass seed season is here, and it poses a hidden danger to our pets. These tiny seeds can get stuck in your dog's paws, ears, or eyes, causing infections and severe discomfort.

Preventive Measures:
Always inspect your dog’s paws, ears, and coat after walks.
Keep fur trimmed around sensitive areas with regular grooming.
Choose routes with shorter grass to minimise risk.

OVERHEATING IN CATS! 🐱🥵

Just like all animals, as well as us, overheating is a major risk for our feline friends.

But the trick is to identify when your cat is overheating before it turns into heatstroke... How? 👇

Watch out for these signs:

-Gums that appear dark red or grey
-High temperature
-Lethargy
-Panting
-Rapid heartbeat
-Restlessness
-Vocalising

If you see any of these signs in your cat, it's time to intervene and do what it takes to cool them down. Whether that be encouraging them to eat, using a fan near them, create icy treats, providing cooling mats, using wet towels, providing shade or simply keeping them indoors.

SUNBURN IN DOGS! ☀️

Now that our first aid courses have taken a break for Summer, it's time to give you som top tips for keeping your pets happy and healthy in the heat! 🥵🐶

Did you know that dogs can become sunburned just like us? 👀

That's right! Harmful UV rays can damage their skin in just an hour. While you shouldn't be walking your dog during the hottest hours of the day, sunburn is still a risk out in the garden and indoors when exposed to rays.

How do you prevent it? 👇

-Use a dog-friendly sun cream or wipes
-Purchase your dog a sunhat to reduce the risk of sunstroke
-Remember to reapply sun cream if your dog runs into water.
-Limit your dog's exposure to the sun

STAY VIGILANT OF BLUE-GREEN ALGAE! 😮

In fact, it's not actually algae. It's a bacteria group called cyanobacteria...

While you may be thinking a dip in the local lake will cool down your pooch during these hot days, it can be deadly to canines, causing them liver failure in extreme cases!

Therefore, it's important that you stay vigilant. If your dog has ingested this awful bacteria and they're showing signs of poisoning by vomiting, having seizures, collapsing, profusely drooling or struggling to breathe, seek medical attention immediately. 😞

It is said that you should induce vomiting after 2-3 hours of ingesting the water, however, this treatment doesn't always work.

So, think twice about letting your dogs take a dip near such waters! 🐶

Some solid advice for the Summer months! ☀️

IT'S DARTS SEASON! 🌾

While you may have been looking out for them already, do you know everything there is to know about grass seeds?

-Firstly, dogs & cats are at risk of acquiring grass seeds
-The seed itself can easily and quickly pe*****te the skin in multiple areas of the body
-They cause a lot of pain and discomfort, and in extreme cases, can be fatal
-For the paws, seeds can dig into the flesh between the pads
-Seeds can also burrow deep into ears

To identify whether your little pal has picked up some of these pesky seeds, look out for licking of the paws, lameness, head shaking and excessive scratching, amongst any unusual behaviour. 😔

In fact, we recommend giving your dog a quick check after every walk, and your cats a once over every now and then if they're one to explore outside! ❤

Do you know how to get rid of a tick the RIGHT WAY? 👀

In the Summer months, your pet could be at extreme risk of acquiring ticks, especially if they often go into fields. 😖

And one misconception of how to rid of these nasty critters is to grab the head of the tick and twist. However, this can cause even further plantation!

Instead, use a specialised tick removing tool, grasp it as close to the skin as possible and gently & slowly rotate it anti clockwise, until the entire tick is out.

This way, you won't leave any remains of the critter underneath the skin. When left, you could be at risk of fatal Lyme Disease.

How would you start giving CPR on your pet? Unsure? 🤔

Well, you can refer to the clever ABC method: Airway, breathing and circulation.

However, you must always start with circulation first. Is there a heartbeat or pulse? If not, now is the time to start compressions once they've gained a clear airway.

Has your pooch got a case of diarrhoea? 🤔

In most cases, you will be recommended to give your dog a plain diet until the bug has passed through...

AND that usually means rice. While rice is non-toxic for dogs and does help with some implications, it can also rise blood sugar levels due to its high glycemic index. And the more this happens, the more they're at risk of health issues such as diabetes. ❌

Therefore, it is recommended that you feed your pooch an alternative such as pumpkin or chicken broth... two very plain food types. As we know these aren't always easy to access, you can also opt for some plain chicken breast!
