๐Ÿด Tried & Tested: Trickle Net Shake & Graze Chaff Net in Horse & Rider Magazine ๐Ÿด
Earlier this year Horse&Rider Magazine tested our Shake & Graze Chaff Net and itโ€™s full of great insights.
The reviewer shared how Trickle Net:
โœ… Helped slow their horseโ€™s eating for better digestion.
โœ… Was durable and tough enough to withstand regular use.
โœ… Worked well during winter stabling and summer grazing management.
โœ… Doubled as a trickle net for main forage rations when filters were removed.
Itโ€™s a practical solution for keeping horses entertained, managing their weight, and ensuring a steady forage intake.

I was pulled from my field, from my work, from my play,
Neโ€™er again to see England, in lands far away,
Through death and destruction, through blood sweat and tears,
I carried my master, along with my peers,
So I ask you to remember a while,
Along with the soldiers, in smart rank and file,
Remember our beauty, the strength of our kind,
As we galloped through danger, without care to mind,
For we were the horses thrust into war,
And we gave up our lives for your peace evermore.

'Ad lib is natural for horses' - IS IT? This is the old debate we see so often. However ab lib forage does not promote trickle feeding.

Many owners are confused about feeding ad lib. While some horses may have the metabolism to cope with ad lib, It is simply not natural or healthy for many horses. Some owners get defensive about this, and we think they truly misunderstand. While they want to defend what horses NEED (quite right too) they are misguided in the true meaning of the phrase, their understanding of 'natural' and the delivery options available.

Ad lib = As much and as often as desired.

Where would you find such an abundance of calories piled up in one spot, in any natural equine environment?
You wouldn't. Because it's not naturally occurring.

In their natural environment, horses are roaming, browsing and grazing animals. They are on the move for around 18 hours a day, searching out any forage they can find. This will be many species of plants. Grasses, legumes, bark and shrubs. They have a much more varied coarse diet, and it's certainly not ad lib. They have to forage for their food, and this is where native equines thrive on surviving.

While this natural lifestyle does not provide ad lib forage for equines, it DOES provide constant access. It is this constant access which is crucial to equine health. Small amounts, trickle feeding. This slow trickle of constant forage brings a host of benefits including increased saliva production, improved gut health, reduces incidents of colic, regulates insulin, balances natural dental wear, balances hormones, releases endorphins, reduces stress, promotes social herd happiness... and much more.
Whether your horse is an Irish bog cob or a fancy dancing Warmblood. From their whiskers to the tips of their tails, with all the body parts, emotions and behaviours that make them who they are. They are 100% designed for optimum function through trickle feeding with constant access forage.

Constant access is controlled and regulated to best replicate the natural environment where horses thrive. When managing our horses, If we aim to increase movement while providing constant controlled access to forage, then we are really making big improvements in welfare purely based on following the true natural example.

THIS is the key to species appropriate feeding within a domestic environment. (THIS is why track systems are utterly brilliant.)

Ad lib is not natural.
Constant controlled access is natural.
They are not the same!

It's really important as horse owners that we understand this difference.

Why don't we sell nets to hold 12kg hay?
Easy. You probably shouldn't be feeding 12kg hay!!

The amount of forage you feed your horse is just as important as the quality and the method of feeding. We would love every owner to understand how much forage their horse requires, and what this looks like. It would be irresponsible of us to encourage correct feeding rations and trickle feeding, and then provide you with a net that holds twice as much as your horse requires! ๐Ÿค”

Who might need a 12kg hay net in the stable? Well, a 750kg horse who only gets 6 hours of average turnout each day could require 12kg additional forage. (Based on 90% DM)
So unless you have a heavy draft horse over 17hh, who is stabled for 18 hours a day - Or a very large 18hh plus middleweight sports horse on limited turnout.....
BUT - even then, you STILL should NOT be using a 12kg hay net in a stable.

Why not? - ๐—œ๐˜'๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜

It is not ideal for your horse to stand in one spot long enough to eat that amount of forage. Research with Trickle Nets by ARU Writtle (formerly Writtle University College) noted that horses will stand one way when eating from a net. They will favour one side, with one leg forward* and this may lead to some muscle imbalance. The recommendation was to use two nets at opposite sides of the stable, to encourage a mirror / opposite stance and balance the muscle activity.

Does your horse have a weaker side? How many hours per day are they standing in the same place, in the same position munching from the same net? ๐Ÿคฏ

*they do this grazing too, but will naturally switch sides with freedom to roam.

So instead of using one huge net, use two smaller nets.

This is advice we regularly give to our customers. If we must use nets, use them in the best possible way. Think about your horses environment, activity and enrichment opportunities. Let's not encourage 'parking' for long periods. Instead, provide your horse with options to graze from nets at various heights and locations. Nets can be used well and bring lots of benefits, but we still need to consider ways to reduce the impact of human convenience, and provide choice and free movement as much as possible.

In our expert opinion, 12kg nets should not be used in stables.
That's a product made for our convenience, NOT your horses health.

Would you agree?

caveat - Get down track fans, you're not included! Your horses are already winning in plenty of other ways! Also yes, we sell bale nets for use in communal equine management, not solitary confinement.

I use every size of Trickle Net going and they have been such an asset to my management. Thanks to their clever design, I'm able to administer forage without worrying about my horses hoovering their hay and the variety of sizes mean I can interchange depending on the situation (4kg and 8kg)

The black net resting on my wheelbarrow's handlebars is a Trickle Net Original, and that one is 6 years old ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

With Trickle Nets, you really realise that if you pay less you buy twice, the black net has cost me a measly ยฃ6.67 for each years use and is still going strong ๐Ÿ’ช

I really think we need to spread a little joy right now. Photos like this never fail to bring me a smile. This is Trickle Net's Boots, a Sec D mare with enough sass, spring and spirit for any rider. She once dropped me for a 'tweet' in a hedge, though she has no fear when faced with a noisy line of harvest machinery! However, she is really a true sweetheart. With a child on board Boots is always a perfect angel. I could never find another like her, and my daughter (in this photo) and I totally adore her. In fact she can do no wrong in my eyes. I've no idea why she's not more famous ๐Ÿคฃ

Do you have an angel of the same calibre as our ginger mare?
Do you have a horse that you would trust completely?
Or one that can switch up and down gears to adapt to their rider?

Lets see your photos and spread some joy with our superstars.
How lucky are we to have these treasures in our lives!?
