My latest blog :-)
At a time we seem to be seeing more and more use of aversives (tight slip leads, e and prong collars etc) resulting in superficially "well behaved", but stressed and unhappy dogs (panting, ears tucked back, tension are some signs we are likely to see), we owe it to dogs to be better at communicating positive techniques, and implementing them effectively, to owners.

Using food treats – have we gone wrong somewhere? Leave a Reply I was chatting to an old friend today about using food treats in training and she was lamenting the fact that food seems to be so overused in training these days – and that often dogs can’t/won’t do anything unless the owner is ...

Do you like to be a bit nerdy about training sometimes?

A question I posed to Skills Support members today :-)

A new study (see below) said -
"Although it seems that self-selected music is more effective in humans compared to researcher-selected music, this could not be directly applied to veterinary medicine, as dogs and cats cannot choose the music intervention on their own, according to their individual preferences. "

Really? They can't? Do we KNOW that?

IF you wanted to teach a dog to CHOOSE what music it wanted to listen to, do you think it could be done? And how would you do it?

Georgiou, S.G. and Galatos, A.D. (2025) ‘Music as a perioperative, non-pharmacological intervention in veterinary medicine. Establishing a feasible framework for music implementation and future perspectives with a focus on the perioperative period of dogs and cats’, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, 12. While on the subject of fear - I wrote this blog a few years back. No reason to change much about it now, except the main A road leading to the Humber Bridge from Lincoln is WAY more dangerous than the bridge itself so no amount of pay, professional benefit or intrinsic enjoyment of the job would motivate me to take the trip now! 😊

Fearful dogs – and what I learned from the Humber Bridge Paddy Driscoll The very, VERY high Humber Bridge I am afraid of heights. Big time. I’m not entirely sure how it became the issue it did, but on Sumer holidays as a child my parents learned that it was ill advised to try and make me go up t...

Sometimes in the Teamwork Training Skills Support group we like to have a bit of a deeper dive into behaviour topics as a change from the day to day practical issues of interest to trainers. Like looking at this interesting study.
