The very beautiful boy that is Chester.

He has come on miles. Really settling.
One hurdle is his love for other dogs.

He is the “my dog is friendly” Labrador.

Obviously running at dogs from distance at warp speed is socially unacceptable, and yes we all know that some dogs really find this hard.

The other side of the coin, meeting dogs is as important as the air that Chester breathes to him. Keeping him on leash and denying this need is not what his owner wants.

His recall is incredible until there’s a whiff of a dog.

So bring in good old premack.
Recruiting Venice to help him understand that it’s more than ok to interact and play, but with order.
In doing this I’ve also discovered that Chester is a social learner and very much copies & mimics other dogs. So he’s completely taking social cues from Venice, who is fantastic in social settings.

He may make a little slip up, but to get to excellent you need to journey through good.

So often social media is awash with negativity about dogs who just bomb up to other dogs. And I completely agree and understand. But next time you are in a situation with a dog like Chester. Please try and keep your cool, if you can. We can all help one another make a better world for all dogs!

Today he was a good boy….it won’t be long until he is an excellent boy

Baxter in the final stages of his walk & train.

Recall ☑️
Focus ☑️

Now just looping back on his leash skills.
He can be quite barky at other dogs, but only on leash.
Instead of focusing on the symptom I’m going straight to source. If the leash is creating a response I need to change his vibe when on leash.

Today we worked on some heeling, he loved it!

Really chuffed with this guy. He’s been an incredible training buddy.

Love this guy!
Flek.

I’ve done a few sessions with him now, and he’s smashing it!

Today we spangled like a spaniel getting a grip on harnessing his little hunter instinct and getting it to work with a recall, not against it!

Walk & train Odin

His loose leash is well on the way to being great for his age. Recall is coming on swimmingly.

Today we worked in a busier place, getting him more engaged through distractions.

Thank you to all the people who commented on how cute he is but were very understanding when I requested they didn’t distract him.
This stops any expectation from Odin of approaching people he doesn’t know and are none of his business. Yup, we all like a cute pup, but they aren’t for everyone’s enjoyment.

We also done some trainspotting. Not in the Irvine Welsh sense!!! He’s too young for that.

As part of our husbandry month at club, we are doing those tootsies. Not just trimming nails but keeping those paws soft with paw balm. Doing this helps the dog get comfortable with paws being handed, plus a huge oxytocin release for both human and dog. We just need candles and whale sounds 🤣

Odin coming on so well in his walk & train.
Got him much steadier walking and amongst distractions.
Now looking at recall.
Building a recall is like peeling an onion. You can’t just do one thing and expect a response, this may work but it’s generally temporary.

The dog has to want to come back!
Using play, premack, food and delivery of the reinforcement is the order.
This is ongoing. You also need to control the environment without micromanaging the dog!

Awesome wee dog.

If you have a dog that’s just entering that juvenile stage and you are looking for the essentials but just find the whole thing overwhelming, let me take the load and book walk & train!
