Thank you very much to all who kindly dropped off their spare clean uncut pumpkins. Our tapir family are always very pleased to have some chopped into their fruit, veg and cereal mix. Early hours of this morning we had a little snow flurry, but it’s been a calm and glorious, sunny day. It is hard to imagine that in a few hours, a three day battering of rain and winds in excess of 60 mph are expected. We are very sorry not to be able to welcome visitors this weekend but look forward to opening again next Saturday and Sunday. #tapir #lunch #stormBert #Linton #Cambridgeshire

A lot of the plants, trees and shrubs we grow in our gardens are very pretty to look at, but have a dual purpose, the majority have been selected for their benefits to native wildlife and for many of our animals. Throughout the spring into autumn we harvest leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, stems and roots which are then fed fresh to tortoises, lemurs and browsing animals, providing enhanced diets and important enrichment. Our tapir family Tiana, Tamara, Erro and Thiago always appreciate browse, here’s three of them making short work of buddleia 😊💕! #tapir #browse #buddleia
Here is your promised “cuteness”😊We are delighted to announce that our Cotton-top tamarin pair became parents for the first time on Monday. You can see from the film that dad Inesperado is very pleased with his adorable twins, he carries them around handing them back to mum Jayda for feeding. Cotton-top tamarins are from a small forested area of northwestern Colombia. In the late 60’s and early 70’s around 30,000 were taken from the wild for medical research. Today the most significant threat to their survival in the wild is human activity and deforestation, it is estimated that only five percent of its habitat remains. Their numbers are on decline and the IUCN rank the cotton-top tamarin as critically endangered with a high risk of extinction in the wild. Our pair are part of a managed European Breeding Programme or EEP. #cute

This is Queenie, one of our Victoria crowned pigeons. They originate from the swampy forests of Northern New Guinea and surrounding islands. Now the Dodo is extinct these birds are largest of the pigeon family. These beautiful birds are quite fearless of humans and so are easily hunted for their amazing head plumes, they are rapidly decreasing in numbers and are now IUCN ranked as vulnerable. Our pair were both captive bred and are part of a European breeding programme EEP aimed at saving them from extinction.
