Castle Veterinary Group are extremely proud to be an independent veterinary practice but in a world where corporate-owned veterinary practices continue to rise on an upward trajectory, the question thrown to the forefront is: Independent vs corporate, which is better? When considering your options for veterinary care, it is helpful to know the difference between the two. While all vets, working in a range of business setups, have your petโ€™s best interest at heart, it is worth noting that the framework in which they operate may impact on the level of care your pet receives.

Although corporate practices may have more resources, they often feel less personal. Here at Castle Vets, we pride ourselves on our ability to provide continuity of care. As a result of excellent staff retention rates our clients are always greeted by a familiar face who knows their petโ€™s treatment history. We are able to provide a more personalised experience for our clients which is not only great for pets, but also serves as a great satisfaction for our team who get to build trusting relationships with their clients and see cases through to the end.

When it comes to making decisions on the best course of treatment for your pet, we are not governed by corporate policies and procedures which enables us to resolve treatment decisions with owners, rapidly. Pets are individuals who have their own specific set of needs and veterinary care can never be approached with a one size fits all attitude. As an independently owned practice we have the freedom to make prompt treatment decisions using clinical judgement which in turn enables us to respond to those needs in the best possible way.

And what about fees?

Veterinary care has become expensive over the past few years and at Castle Vets we want to be straightforward and upfront about our fees. Listed below are some of the prices for our most common consultations and procedures but we will always be transparent when asked about the cost of ANY of the services we provide. We work hard to keep our prices as affordable and competitive as possible.

As you might have guessed its Rabbit Awareness Week!

Some fun Facts:

~ A baby rabbit is called a kit, a female is called a doe and a male is called a buck.

~ A rabbitโ€™s teeth never stop growing! Instead, theyโ€™re gradually worn down as the rabbit chews on grasses, wildflowers and vegetables โ€” meaning they never get too long.

~ Rabbitsโ€™ eyes are on the sides of their head, meaning they can see almost all the way around them. This helps them to keep a close watch for predators while theyโ€™re going about their business!

~ Like cats, happy rabbits purr when theyโ€™re content and relaxed.

~ Rabbits are very effective baby-makers! Mother rabbits are pregnant for between 28-31 days, giving birth to up to 14 baby rabbits โ€“ called kittens โ€“ in a single litter. There are over 45 million rabbits in the UK alone!!

For your young ones - please find attached a colouring sheet ๐Ÿฅฐ

We couldnโ€™t be without our nursing team here at Castle Vets, but do you know what they do for your pet?

The role of the veterinary nurse has evolved greatly over the years and our nurses care for our pet patients from the moment they come through the consulting room door. Over the coming weeks we want to introduce you to members of the nursing team, give you a sneak peak into what goes on behind the scenes and show you a day in the life of a registered veterinary nurse ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿน

๐Ÿ›ณ Remembering the dogs of the Titanic - April 15th 1912

Whether you learned about it in history class or, at the very least, from the iconic movie of the same name, there are very few people who donโ€™t know the story of the RMS Titanic, the luxury ocean liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. More than 1500 people died in the disaster, but they werenโ€™t the only casualties.
The ship carried at least twelve dogs, only three of which survived. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿพ

First-class passengers often traveled with their pets. The Titanic was equipped with a first-rate kennel and the dogs were well-cared for, including daily exercise on deck. There was even an informal dog show scheduled for April 15, which, sadly, never took place. Aside from the kenneled dogs, some first-class passengers kept pets in their staterooms, with the crew turning a blind eye.

When we think of the devastating losses suffered 112 years ago this April, letโ€™s take a minute to think of the beloved pets that were part of the Titanicโ€™s maiden voyage, the lucky three who survived and the many who, along with fifteen hundred human passengers, perished in the icy waters off the Newfoundland coast.

๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐ŸญHappy World Rat Day!๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ

Today is a day to dispel the bad vibe that rats suffer...

๐ŸญRats are intelligent, highly social and make incredibly rewarding animals to look after.
๐ŸญHowever, they do have complex needs and are not always easy to look after well.
๐ŸญSome of the things that rats need to live out a happy life are:
Company โ€“ rats are social animals and require company of their own kind. Lone rats can even become depressed. In order to avoid unwanted babies, it is usually best to pair or group rats of the same s*x. If you do choose to pair or group male and female rats together, make sure the males are neutered to prevent unwanted litters.
๐ŸญA good sleep โ€“ as rats are nocturnal they are most active at night and at dawn or dusk. You may wish to consider the location of their cage for the benefit of your sleep and theirs. Keep their cage away from draughts, direct sunlight, loud noises and vibrations given off by televisions and speakers.
๐ŸญDust free bedding โ€“ avoid using bedding such as wood shavings or sawdust as this can cause respiratory problems. Dust extracted bedding is best such as paper-based, non-aspen wood chips or cellulose-based chips.
๐ŸญShelter โ€“ rats need a designated space to enjoy some peace and quiet and to sleep so a nest box is an important addition to their cage.
๐ŸญEnrichment โ€“ A ratโ€™s cage should have multiple toys to keep them busy such as tunnels, things to climb and a rat safe exercise wheel. There should be enough room inside the cage to allow normal rat behaviours, such as burrowing, nesting, exploring and exercising. The opportunity to explore outside of their cage is also beneficial but make sure that play conducted outside of the cage is safe and rat-proof. Doors and windows should be closed and block cracks in floorboards, as rats can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps.
๐ŸญFood โ€“ rats love a varied diet that includes grains, vegetables and a protein source, such as dry dog food. While rats are partial to titbits and household scraps, it is important that they do not overeat and become overweight. The occasional piece of fruit or veg is fine but peanuts and sunflower seeds are high in fat and should only be given as a rare treat. Fresh, clean water must always be available.
๐ŸญIt is also important to be aware of any changes in your rat which might indicate that they are unwell. The signs to look out for are:
Loss of appetite
Losing or gaining weight
Runny nose or eyes
Red discharge around the nose or eyes
Sneezing or wheezing
Lethargy or tiredness
๐ŸญIf you have a pet rat/s and you are concerned about their health, please speak with a vet. It is also advisable to bring your rat in once a year for a check-up. Rats are prey animals so are good at hiding signs of ill-health. This is why an annual vet visit is important to avoid any illness.

This Easter ๐Ÿฃ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿซ

We know how tempting it is, especially at Easter, But please remember most naughty treats we like to eat - your dogs should avoid.
The most important items to keep out of reach and away from your much-loved dogs this easter are:

๐Ÿซ chocolate โ€“ this contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs

๐Ÿ‡raisins, sultanas, currants and grapes โ€“ they can all can cause fatal kidney failure in dogs

๐ŸŒท๐Ÿชดsome spring bulbs and plants that are poisonous to dogs โ€“ some can be fatal if eaten

If you find your dog has managed to get hold of any of these items it is important you contact the vet straight away - for all emergencies please contact our Launceston branch on 01566 772211

These two beautiful boys belong to one of our small animal partners - Claire, Claire works in our main branch in Launceston and every Thursday and Friday in our newly opened Liskeard branch.

Claire qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1994 and spent 18 years working in mixed and then small animal practices in the South East.

She loves chickens and has become the โ€˜go toโ€™ person for Backyard Chickens in the practice.
When not at work, she enjoys being outdoors in the beautiful Cornish countryside, cycling or walking with her Lab crosses, Peanut and Roobarb.
