On the 24 day of Christmas we have Daisy the Dachshund!
Daisy has been coming to us since May after her spinal surgery. She was diagnosed with IVDD and had a hemilaminectomy on T10-T11.
She initially had poor proprioception of her back legs and needed to build up the strength in her legs, too. Part way through her rehab, Daisy sadly had to go back for further surgery and lost use of her hind legs.
This meant her treatment plan is now focused on re-educating her gait. This involved manually moving/assisting her back legs until she built some muscle memory and proprioception back. She is making great progress, now using her back legs herself with the help of the support of the water properties. Keep up the amazing work Daisy!

Day 23 we have the lovely Asger!

Asger is an old boy who has been having hydro for many years for arthritis management.
Asger comes to us monthly for muscle maintenance and joint relief. The warm water around his joints eases any discomfort he may have. His range of movement in his back legs improves over his session as his muscles relax and his joints loosen. Great work Asger!

Day 22 we have Daisy!

Daisy comes to us fortnightly for arthritis management in her hind legs. When Daisy came to us, she was very nervous. With lots of positive reinforcement, we managed to persuade her that the treadmill wasn’t so scary!
Positive reinforcement is a really important aspect, especially the first couple of sessions as
not only does a tense dog = tense muscles, but it can also cause a negative association, which can cause them to shut down or react and not perform the best they can.

Daisy has a small incline (not too much due to her age) to help strengthen her back end. Her owner has reported more energy and more enjoyment of her walks.
Well done, Daisy!

Day 21 of our christmas countdown!

Arlo started his rehab with us after his cruciate ligament repair. The resistance of the water works the muscles, so we start slowly and build up. Now recovered from his injury. Arlo comes to us fortnightly for maintenance sessions. We drop the water and increase the incline to work his hind legs. We have recently introduced a small trot in his sessions for stamina.
Arlo is doing very well!

For day 20 we have the beautiful Nala!
Nala was referred to us back in September with osteoarthritis and elbow dysplasia. She also has an under active thyroid. This is known as hypothyroidism, which can show itself with fatigue, thinning of the coat and being more prone to skin and ear infections. Her arthritis and elbow dysplasia can cause intermittent lameness and muscle wastage. Nala comes to us weekly for swimming to relieve any discomfort and build muscle on her front legs.
She is doing much better and her front legs are looking and feeling much stronger! She gets very excited when she knows she is going swimming!
Nala is also receiving the librela injection and acupuncture alongside her hydrotherapy to help manage her condition, she will also be starting stem cell therapy in the new year.
Well done Nala, keep going!

For day 19 we have Enzo (aka Enzo Ferrari 🏎️).
Enzo has a workout in our underwater treadmill once a fortnight to help improve muscle and stamina.
Enzo is a sports dog, competing mostly in canicross and bikejor. These sports require lots of training, and hydrotherapy plays a role in Enzo’s training program making sure he is as strong as possible take part. He does a lot of trotwork in the treadmill, which with the resistance of the water is quite tricky!
You are just incredible, Enzo!

For day 18 we have brothers Jet and Jasper!

Jet has been diagnosed with DM (Degenerative myelopathy) which is a disease that affects the spinal cord, causing progressive muscle weakness and loss of coordination.

Jet comes to us twice a week to help to manage the muscle condition in his back legs as much as we can. He has been doing very well at the moment, and seems to enjoy walking without any aids- simply the buoyancy of the water supporting his back end.

Jet has a DNA strand that means he had a higher chance of developing this disease. Jasper unfortunately shares this DNA strand, meaning Jasper also has a higher chance of developing his disease. Therefore Jasper sees us weekly, to improve his muscle tone and general fitness, to give him the best chance should he ever be diagnosed.

These two lovely boys are doing very well, keep up the good work you two!! 🐶🐶

Day 17 of our Christmas countdown, we have the lovely Rosie.

Rosie is a rescue, so we took it nice and gently with her to start, so she gained positive experience and learnt we weren’t scary!
Rosie initially came to us with left hind leg lameness and associated muscle wastage. She has a history of having a TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) on her right leg a few years ago, which is a surgery used to treat a cruciate rupture. She also has arthritis in her elbows.

She comes to us fortnightly for treatment in our underwater treadmill. Now she has built the muscle back up in her left hind, we get her working those back legs a little more by introducing inclines and dropping the water level. Lower water makes it tricker as there is less support. She has to lift her hocks up and over the water, further improving her range of motion and muscle strength in her hind leg. The incline also helps build up strength in her front legs, which will help support the arthritic joints.

Well done, Rosie! 🐶

For day 16 we have the handsome Bear!
At only 9 months old, Bear has already been diagnosed with both hip and elbow dysplasia. Poor boy! Bear recently joined us in November, rather quiet for a 9 month old puppy and lacking in muscle on his back end. Fast forward a month later and we can already see a difference in him! Bear uses our underwater treadmill weekly to build up the muscle on both his hind legs and front legs. Already his owner is reporting that he has more energy and is running around more at home (just be careful of the Christmas tree Bear!) We tend to see the most results with muscle mass between 6-8 sessions, so we are excited to see further improvement as his sessions progress.
You’re doing amazingly, Bear!

For day 15 we have the cheeky duo Mishka and Kendall!
Both girls come fortnightly to swim in our pool for maintenance of their fitness, mobility, and range of motion. Mishka has cushings disease, which is a condition affecting cortisol levels in the body. This disease develops when the adrenal gland becomes overactive and releases too much cortisol. Cushings disease can cause weight gain and muscle wastage, so aerobic exercise like swimming is great for weight managment because it is an exercise that fully engages the whole body and raising the heart rate safely which is good for burning calories.
Kendall comes to us after suffering with a cruciate injury. The resistance of the water helps to build up the muscle on her back legs, while the buoyancy supports her during safe controlled exercise. This means that Kendall can safely use her hind legs in the water more than she can on land. Both girls put in great effort when they are swimming with us, providing a fish stick is ready and waiting for them.

Keep being cheeky girls!

On day 14 of our Christmas countdown, we have a golden oldie!

Otis has been coming to us for many years for arthritis management.
At the grand old age of 15, we’d say he’s doing pretty well! His vets have actually said that it’s the hydro that has helped him keep going this long!
We see visible results every week as the 32°C water and gentle movement warms up those joints, helping his mobility and easing any discomfort he may have.
Swimming is an ideal form of exercise for oldies like Otis who can’t walk as far as they used to. You’re smashing it, Otis 🥰

For day 13 we have the gorgeous Reggie.

Reggie attends due to having bilateral intermittent lameness in his hind legs. He had mild iliopsoas enthesopathy, which is a condition that affects the insertion of the muscle on the femur. He also has a very slight luxation of the patella. He had lost a lot of muscle mass when he first arrived.

The end goal for Reggie was to build muscle on his back end to reduce the lameness and to strengthen him up so he could get back to hiking. He has made very good progress!

We see Reggie fortnightly now for maintenance of his current condition. He is even having a little trot on the belt now to make it a little harder for him, aswell as a small incline.
Keep up the good work, Reggie!

Day 12 of our christmas countdown!

Ella had to have her left hind leg amputated due to suffering with bilateral ruptured achilles tendons. Her right leg successfully repaired, but her left sadly repaired then failed.
However, this doesn’t stop her! She is still an energetic girl and loves swimming in our heated swimming pool fortnightly, especially as this means she can still play with her favourite ball! She swims with us for impact free exercise as well as strengthening and maintaining her muscles to keep her strong all over.
What a star you are, Ella!

Day 11 of our countdown to Christmas we have Bear.

Bear started coming to us back in June after having TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgery. This is an orthopaedic procedure that stabilises the knee joint after a cruciate ligament rupture. Bear started off weekly in our underwater treadmill to rebuild the muscle mass on his leg.

We built him up slowly over the course of 8-10 sessions, after which the increase of muscle mass and improvement of range of movement was visible. He now comes to us fortnightly, and is being challenged with lower water and an incline to increase intensity, and is coping very well.
Statistically, there is a chance that Bear may need a TPLO surgery on his other leg, so by coming to us for maintenance sessions, we ensure his leg is as strong as possible, just incase.
Great work Bear!

Day 10!

Dominic comes to us weekly because he has a form of arthritis known as septic arthritis.
This is when a joint becomes infected and the inflammation affects the cartilage. The inflamed joints can limit range of movement and can cause instability.
Dominic uses our underwater treadmill to assist stabilisation by building up the muscle around the joint.
He is a happy little chap!

Day 9 of our Christmas countdown!

Rose has been coming to us weekly to manage her elbow condition.
She dislocated both of her elbows at a very young age. One of her elbows healed, but the other had to be fused!
Rose swims in our heated swimming pool to maintain the range of movement of her front legs and build muscle tone.
Rose is only 9 months old. So it is very important that her joints remain stable.
You’re doing a super job, Rose!

On Day 8 of our Christmas countdown, we have Floki.

Floki is a newbie here at Duchy Canine. He has recently started post-op rehabilitation with us after having spinal surgery. He initially had little awareness and restricted movement of his hind legs.
He utilises our underwater treadmill weekly to build up muscle on his hind legs, improve proprioception, and increase range of movement.
He is already making some great progress!
Keep going, Floki!

Day 7 starring Biff.

Biff attends weekly for arthritis management. At 14 years old, he is a super star! He uses our lovely spacious hydrotherapy pool to ease his aching joints. Being a non weight bearing exercise, Biff can enjoy a swim without any impact on his old arthritic joints.
This, in turn, is great for pain relief and gentle exercise as well as helping to maintain his cardiac health and stamina while he isn’t able to walk as far anymore.

In true Biff style he sings throughout his sessions!
What a sweet boy you are, Biff 🐶
